If I was an artist I'd hop on that trend everyone is doing and draw Conor, Meilin, Takoda and Xanthe turning a corner in the tunnels of Sadre only to find themselves in the Backrooms. But alas

ok i did just reread the first part of the book of shane to try and articulate this:

grooming - the action of attempting to form a relationship with a child or young person, with the intention of inducing them to commit an illegal act such as selling drugs or joining a terrorist organization.

did zerif form a relationship with shane? well, yes. their relationship is built on the fact that zerif has the cure for the bonding sickness, of which shanes beloved sister is afflicted with. this already also puts him in a position of power over shane despite shane being royalty.

did shane sell drugs/join a terrorist organisation? baby he led it. and i guess you can count the bile as a drug if you didnt count the conquerors and their war as a terrorist organistation

"but shane decided to become the next reptile king by himself! zerif didnt tell him to bond with grahv!" throughout the three days zerif is imprisoned and shane visits him, he brings up needing to talking to the king every day. and every day he questions whether who is actually in charge between shane and general gar. and its already established that shane Hates his uncle and in the first paragraph of the book we actually see shane stand closer to the throne than gar to try and reclaim any power over him. we also see him try and not make a face when gar takes charge of a royal event and belittle shane. zerifs undermining of what little power shane had over his uncle was the final straw that pushed shane into becoming the devourer. and obviously zerif wanted this and so had reason to question the authority between shane and gar, but if he hadnt im 100% sure shane wouldve been content to cure his sister and leave stetriol with her. that was his plan before zerif got under his skin, anyway.

Throughout the series, Zerif clearly aims his manipulation at children. This can also be seen with Devin, Karmo, Ana, and Tahlia, but especially with Raisha. Along with Shane, all these children were groomed by Zerif for his benefit.

My personal belief for why his “minions”, aka victims, are usually children is not only because the plot of a kids series warrants for more child characters, but also because they’re the easiest for him to manipulate.

In conclusion, Zerif is 100% a groomer. Thanks for coming to my supplemental TedTalk.

In any modern AU, Meilin would be more goth inclined. Her outfits would be mostly black with white and red accents and she’d never be seen without her black lipstick. So I usually associate her with goth accessories (at least in modern AUs).

The second I heard “Headlock” by Imogene Heap, I was instantly reminded of Rollan, more directed at Fire and Ice, Against the Tide, Rise and Fall, and The Evertree but I find that it still fits him overall as a character.

And “Like Him” by Tyler the Creator, instantly Tarik!!! Every time I listen to that song, I think of Rollan, Reima, and Kirat and the impact that Tarik had.

(Another song, don’t hate me) Sonne by Rammstein. All I can think of is how Shane thinks of Abeke. If you want to see what I mean, look up the English lyrics and imagine Abeke as the “sun” and you’ll see what I mean.

Another song that reminds me of Shane is “Outrunning Karma” by Alec Benjamin, pretty self-explanatory but still hurts.

Omg and “Labour” by Paris Paloma makes me think of Aidana. Everything she suffered because she thought that Zerif was saving her by giving her the Bile, heartbreaking!

“Forwards beckon rebound” by Adrianne Lenker. First time I heard it, Aidana and Rollan in Fire and Ice. On theme with them, “Mama’s Boy” by Dominic Fike. It makes me think of the sharp contrast between Conor and Rollan in relation to their mothers. Both mama’s boys in very separate ways.

“Dove (doll ver)” by Antihoney. Angelic melody paired with lyrics that remind me of Fire and Ice!Rollan.

OMG HOW COULD I FORGET! “Army Dreamers” by Kate Bush. As a whole, reminds me of the Four Fallen but if you look into the specific lyrics, sadly reminds me of Tarik.

“Impacto” by Enjambre is a cute shippy one with a side of angst that reminds me of both Meibeke and Ronor. If you don’t know Spanish, I beg of you to look at the English lyrics and imagine it from Conor and Abeke’s perspective. It’s amazing.

I have way too much time to day dream while listening to music so most of these are songs. But trust me! I have more than just songs!!! 🙏🙏 I’ll probably do a part 2 to satisfy my need to share my thought of Spirit Animals 😭

Body in the Woods AU!!!

From the title you can probably tell that this is a murder mystery AU, just one of several I have cooked up. Also I know it’s not the circus AU that I said I was going to post lol but it’s not entirely ready yet so here’s a peace offering.

- Four high schoolers who don’t know each other wake up in the woods after a huge party the night before.

- They recall seeing each other every now and then because of how small the town they live in is but they’ve never talked to each other before.

- All of them don’t remember much of the night (drinking, drugs, etc) before so when they wake up in the woods, they’re all confused.

- That’s until they realize that among them is a dead body. They recognize her from around their schools halls but they don’t know her that well. The girl is Maya.

- While they don’t remember how or why they’re there with a dead girl, they feel pretty certain that they all had a part in her death.

- The four teens have to work together to hide the body and keep the secret as the police start sniffing around.

- They try to get rid of any evidence of them being at the scene of the crime.

- Meilin is a crime mystery enthusiast and basically leads the group on how to get rid of the evidence.

- They try to pay their respects to the girl by attempting to give her as good a burial as they can with what they had on them but it was a shoddy job.

- The Greencloaks are cops who start an investigation when the body is found a few days later after a missing persons notice goes out.

- Tarik is Rollan’s adoptive father so the four of them get really nervous with how close a cop is to their whole situation (they’re under the impression that they either killed her while under the influence or they didn’t do it but they’re scared that they’ll be arrested for murder, the opinions are split among the group.)

- Meilin is terrified that she might’ve committed the murder while under the influence because of her obsession with true crime.

- Conor is scared that he accidentally killed her while under the influence.

- Abeke doesn’t think that she wouldn’t killed her but she also thinks she was involved in some way since she was there at the scene of the crime.

- Rollan firmly believes that they were set up but he can’t figure out why it would be the four of them, after all they barely knew each other.

- After that night, the main four have been meeting up in secret to help alleviate the weight and guilt of keeping that night a secret.

- After several weeks of investigation, the police start looking into other students at their high school to see if any student had a connection to her death. They believe that it could have been an extreme case of bullying.

- The main four get more paranoid as the investigation gets scarily close to investigating them.

- When the police find out about the party that Maya attended, they start to search for the other kids that attended the party.

- After realizing that they’re going to get involved one way or another, the main four start to do their own investigation to see if they really did kill Maya that night.

Sorry to do my girl Maya like this but it just made the most sense to me. The main four would be aged up to match her but for a guesstimate of their ages in this AU, I’d probably say 15-16. They’d most likely be in their sophomore year of high school. I wanted to have the victim in this be someone the main four know from canon but not someone they’re explicitly close with, hence why it’s not Shane.

Shane will play more of a side character part in this AU. My rough idea for him is to be Abeke’s best friend who starts getting suspicious of her weird behavior. He’s start to question why he’s seeing her talking to these 3 other kids that he knows she didn’t know that well.

The main four would have their own kind of character cliches that you’d see in typical teen tv. Meilin is the valedictorian who has a secret special interest that she’s kind of insecure about (true crime). Abeke is the jock who’s well known around school but she prefers to only have one close friend at the moment (Shane). Conor is that one kid who’s decently smart but not overwhelmingly, but he’s somehow known by all the teachers (who not-so-secretly favorite him). Rollan is the not-so-good kid that backtalks the teachers he thinks deserve it without care for suspension or detention.

The four of them don’t share any classes together, don’t typically see each other in the halls, and wouldn’t spend time in the same area normally so it weirds Shane out that Abeke just started hanging out with them. He eventually starts doing his own digging after realizing that Abeke won’t tell him what’s going on.

Um that’s it everyone! I have my own ideas as to what happened and how but I’ll leave that to when I actually write this into a fan fiction. I kinda like to leave some details open for you guys just in case you want to put your own spin on it. Once I start writing these fics, I’ll let you guys know. I’m under “The Necter” on AO3 if you guys wanna check out the fics that I’ve already written/started, a whole total of 3 so don’t worry. (And before you guys figure out that Necter is spelled wrong, just know that I know and it’s an inside joke.) Please tell me if you guys enjoyed this idea!

Occult Club AU!!!

I’ve actually got two different versions for this AU but they both share some common characteristics:

- Abeke has an obsession with the occult and wants to start an occult club at their high school

- Meilin is a supoortive gf and immediately gets on board

- The club needs at least 3 members to become official so they need at least one more member.

- (Tarik eventually becomes able to see the ghost boy in both versions bc of occult accidents that he stumbled into.)

Version 1:

- After no one else in school expresses interest in the occult, they try to recruit someone they’re more familiar with.

- Abeke and Meilin manage to recruit their classmate, Rollan, after promising him that he doesn’t really have to do anything for the club and that he just needs to show up to meeting to prove that they actually have enough members.

- After some introductions at the first meeting, Abeke tries to summon a ghost with an old book found at their local library and they actually manage to summon a ghost.

- Conor is the Victorian ghost they summoned and has no memory of his previous life.

- He ends up not being as creepy as they were expecting. He acts just like a high school kid, except much more clumsy and bashful.

- When a teacher interrupts the meeting, Rollan, Abeke, and Meilin are all scared as to how they’ll explain the floating boy in the middle of the room above a summoning circle, but it turns out only the three of them can see Conor.

- The four of them try to live their days normally while simultaneously trying to figure out how to bring Conor to peace so he can be sent to the afterlife.

- When they try to figure out what to do with Conor after school (Abeke refuses that he be left alone), he ends up being dumped onto Rollan and stays at his house.

- Conor keeps managing to accidentally cause poltergeist shenanigans at school while the other three scramble to fix his messes.

- Rumor goes around that the school is haunted by a ghost, which draws attention to the occult club. The three (and Conor but he keeps failing) try to keep the hauntings on the low so that the club doesn’t get banned.

- (Rollan lives with and is adopted by Tarik, a teacher at the school. Tarik is also the faculty advisor for the occult club.)

- (Olvan and Lenori are principal and vice principal, respectively. The rest of the adult Greencloaks are teachers or staff. The rest of the child or younger cast are students.)

Version 2:

- Conor is a member of the student council and known for being very reliable and helpful so Meilin and Abeke go to him and practically beg him to join their club.

- Conor CANNOT PHYSICALLY say no so he agrees to join since he has the free time for it.

- After some introductions at the first meeting, Abeke tries to summon a ghost with an old book found at their local library and they actually manage to summon a ghost.

- Rollan is a ghost that they suspect is from the late 1800’s, who was very visibly poor and most likely homeless based on the rags he wore. He has no memory of his previous life.

- Turns out he isn’t into the whole scary part of the ghost business and instead of the creepiness the club was expecting from the ghost, Rollan just throws out insults and attitude instead.

- When their faculty advisor interrupts the meeting, the three members are scared to explain the floating boy above the summoning circle but the advisor doesn’t notice him. Only the three of them can see Rollan.

- After the advisor leaves, Rollan attempts to leave to go do his own thing, but he’s stopped by some sort of force connecting him to the other three.

- After some experimenting, it turns out he has to be within a certain distance of at least one of the club members at all times.

- Abeke is convinced that they have to help Rollan go to the afterlife. Meanwhile Rollan is not very fond of this idea and argues against it but Abeke is very adamant about it.

- After club hours are over, the three high schoolers (all Rollan is doing is complaining about his situation) try to figure out who Rollan’s going to stay with. After Meilin and Abeke ask Conor to keep him, he says yes because he can’t bring himself to say no.

- Conor stays with his parents and two brothers so he tries his best to seem normal while also trying to stop Rollan from messing stuff up in his house.

- His parents and brothers get kind of concerned over Conor’s nervousness so to avoid suspicion, Conor decides to lock himself in his room and tries to convince Rollan to stop causing chaos. It doesn’t work.

- Conor comes to a revelation that he’ll spend a lot of time confined to his room so that he doesn’t look crazy in front of his family for speaking to thin air.

- After that, Rollan keeps causing at least one of the club members trouble by messing with things in their classrooms.

- Rollan’s determined to have some fun by convincing the school that the school is haunted.

- As rumors of a ghost haunting the school starts circling, the occult club is in danger of being shut down. So Abeke, Meilin, and Rollan try to play nice with the ghost in hopes that he’ll grow to like them enough to stop trying to get them in trouble.

- Rollan is not convinced of their friendliness and is sure that there is a different motive in them being so friendly with him, which at first is true.

- While staying with Conor one night, he annoys Conor a bit too much while he’s trying to study and Conor breaks down angrily.

- Conor explodes at Rollan in a mess of tears and yells at him about how Conor’s been trying to be as good of a student as he can possible be, to get as many scholarships as possible so that he can get accepted into college, which is why he’s joining all these clubs. The fact that Rollan keeps distracting him because Conor has to always chase after him like a chaotic toddler is stressing him out so much along with the burden of wanting to be the first person in his family to go to college since they could never afford to.

- Rollan is silent after Conor’s outburst and Conor just decides to call it a night.

- Afterwards, Rollan seems to have reigned himself in a lot, to the surprise of Abeke and Meilin. They’re even more shocked when Rollan tells them about how he wants to help them figure out how to get him to pass on (Conor feels a bit guilty but doesn’t bring it up).

- The only problem is that Rollan needs his memories to do that so as they try to help Rollan regain his memories, they also try to get the club to stay active since the schools convinced they summoned a ghost to haunt the school.

- Rollan reluctantly agrees to stop intentionally haunting the classrooms but accidents happen.

Thanks to whoever got this far in reading my rambling! This AU is pretty popular among my friends so I’ll hope you guys like it too! As you can probably tell, the Ghost!Conor version is a lot sillier than the Ghost!Rollan version. Which is also why there’s less of it written because most of the storyline is hilarities and hijinks rather than the angst that is the Ghost!Rollan version.

This first came to me when I thought of Abeke and Meilin being occult club girlfriends and the Ronor plot kinda developed from there. Meilin and Abeke are very much involved in the plot and that’ll be clear as day whenever I write a fic or two about this. They all very much become an occult club family!

Having had much time to think about Spirit Animals, I’d like to share my AU ideas with you guys so stay tuned!
