Like being caught in a shadow world where the lights of the cosmos are the dreams of a former child actor, forever caught in a low blaze of the dappled half-light of disco balls and jellied stage lights of her youth - now moist night club denizen sway in ecstatic unison as if all were caught in light undersea current as it wraps and writhes slowly around their forgotten bodies as the fever dreams reset and play again and again behind upward tilted and milky smiling eyes…
So reads the press release for Octagonal Wax, Oxykitten’s newest tape out this month on Field Hymns. Wading through the garbled metaphor above gives you a sense of what to expect while listening to this 11 song collection of darkly tinted analog synth-pop: animated discombobulation that at once recalls both a wizened sage and an obnoxiously drunk uncle. “50 Times Higher Than Any Normal Man” opens the tape with an inebriated stumble, a jarring exposition that is as off putting as it is inviting, which makes the moment when the melody enters to guide the intoxicated synth line to safety seem like a world-stopping event. It’s right here, on the very first track, when you realize that Octagonal Wax is something special.
Composed entirely of instrumentals, Octagonal Wax is at times reminiscent of early Black Moth Super Rainbow, who I can only assume is an influence on Wayne Longer, the man behind the project. Instead of coming across as stale repetition, though, Oxykitten’s vision is one of the future. Well, sort of. As another line of the press release states, this music is “from an indeterminate era,” and though I contend that it can pretty well be determined that this stuff is extremely inspired by the 80s, the sentiment of temporal displacement does ring true. I’ve seen the term “retro-future” being thrown around several music blogs lately, and I don’t think I really understood what it meant until listening to Octagonal Wax. Though the sounds on this album seem to be rooted in 80s b-movies (think cheaply produced sci-fi/dystopian films), there is an air of futurism about the entire thing that suggests forward movement and progress instead of stagnant nostalgia. A refreshing air, to say the least.
Stream the album and purchase the cassette here (they’re limited to 100 copies, so get ‘em while they’re hot), and check out the awesome video for standout track “Rat Priest” here.

Oxykitten “Fugue State” out today and totally FREE “Fugue State is a collection of 4 and 8 track tape recordings from Oxykitten’s past. Previously floating around as the spirits of albums never requited, these killer but odd cuts are newly assembled in a shiny and happy home. Hope you enjoy….”

OXYKITTEN ESCAPE FROM NEW AMSTERDAM
I was skeptical that this tape could possibly live up to the concept in the title and artwork, but Oxykitten has clearly put in the work here. Without resorting to words, these instrumental hip-hop dystopia dioramas evoke fascinatingly clear images. You can almost smell the fresh spraypaint on the wall as terse synth textures lance like searchlights over head-nodding drumbeats. An intricate collage cut from the hypnagogia of zoned-out stoner consciousness.
Available from Field Hymns.

“Parking Lot High” displays Oxykitten’s uncanny knack for playful melodies. The pieces vibrate hysterically with sounds reminiscent of early 90s videogame soundtracks. Nostalgia permeates the entire album. By letting the album explore its sonic universe with childlike-innocence, Oxykitten is able...
Oxykitten // “0 for Everything”
Here is one of two brand-spanking-new videos made by TINYLITTLEHAMMERS for tracks off of Oxykitten’s latest album The Streets Were Paved with Circuit Boards. It starts off like a knocked over film projector and then eventually takes you on a journey through human reproduction via some vintage 1960’s animation. It’s a ghostly clip that captures the darkness of the music and together they leave you feeling slightly unsettled.
If you’re diggin’ on the track and wanna hear more you can snag the beautiful cassette from the righteous dudes at Field Hymns Records. I’ve listened to the whole album and it is SICK. As the label puts it the music sounds like “John Carpenter making hip-hop instrumentals for long, sweaty nights”… Rad.
If you’re not the cassette-buying type you can stream/download it on the label’s bandcamp page too.

Oxykitten - Standing On The Edge Of Getting On The Verge
Another post with a music video? In all fairness the last post was “art” and people complained. If you find an illustration of a women licking her own clitoris offensive than you’re on the wrong blog.
Back to Oxykitten…
So this is off of their fourth release titled The Streets Were Paved With Circuit Boards, and to be honest it’s better than a lot of any bullshit I’m hearing lately in clubs. Where’s the drone? Where’s the tracks blowing out tweeters with no low end? I fully understand that people wanna “dance” to “bangers” and say that things are swag, but I’m not on that train. In my defense of being cooler than most, I did wear swagger scented deodorant from Old Spice far before I saw twitter and random blogs filled with #swag…
And again back to Oxykitten…
Sure they’re from Portland (the NW one) and it’s nowhere near as good as Seattle (no shit) but Oxykitten isn’t pissing me off, or getting my underwear in knots. This album in particular hits the sweet spot of I’m not going to go out and jerk off to it, but I’m not going to bash it’s face all over the parking lot of a KFC. This track and music video has a very specific feel as though Dan Deacon, Tobacco, and VHS all threw up on a pile of old Nintendos while hooked up to a 1987 model Zenith, that’s a lot of vomit.
The label Field Hymns also based out of Portland releases their stuff on cassette, and as a digital download. You can buy and stream by clicking your mouse anywhere on this sentence.
