I think regardless of how the COI prison was built, Simon would have spent most of his time in isolation.
Either there were only isolated single cells to begin with or, if there were more communal areas he still would be put in isolation just so the other prisoners wouldn't kill him. While the COI obviously doesn't care much for the lifes of their prisoners, I don't believe they would want them to die for nothing (by simply killing each other). The other prisoners would be either from the COI or from Eden and both have a good reason to hate Simon. There is a high chance some of them would want to beat him up or outright kill him, so he's put in isolation so it doesn't come to that.
I'm currently reading There Is No Antimemetic Devision and I'm listening to the Iron Lung soundtrack while reading and it works so good.
Guess who's laptop broke down right when i really need it for uni? I'm going to throw a fucking fit. Why couldn't it have waitet another two weeks for that? I wouldn't have cared as much then.
At least i have all my fanfics saved online.
the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
I want an AU where Grace, right after getting kicked out of his field of research, has just moved to a new city and started teaching and tries to build a new life.
Meanwhile Simon, who grew up in a cult and got wrongfully imprisoned for terrorism, was just released from prison and started working at a flower shop. He desperately wants to just live a normal life but has spent his whole life either in the cult or in prison and has no idea how many things in the actual world work.
They meet when Grace buys some floweres for his apartment and they talk a little and Grace is instantly intriguinged by Siman and comes vack a few days later to buy plants for his classroom as well.
Eventually they meet in the city where Grace sees Simon completely failing to do something rally mundane (like withdrawing money or something) because he's never done it before. Grace offers to help him and they talk some more. Grace realises that Simon dos not know about a lot of things (he assumes he Simon just moved to america from somewhere really different) and offers to help him out.
They start meeting up regularly and Grace starts showing Simon all kinds of different things. From how to buy bus tickets to going to the cinema togeter. Grace is really happy he made a friend in this new city. Meanwhile Simon is feeling really guilty because Grace doesn't know who he is and Simon thinks he would bate him if he ever finds out. Bjt he likes their friendship too much to actually tell Grace about his past.
Forgot to post this here: The second chapter of my Bloodymary x Martian fic is out. Punctually to the Iron Lung digital release and our containment breach (I'm sure Mark knew for a while but this was litterally the funniest way he could have said it)

GUYS HE KNOWS BLOODYMARY CONFIRMED OH YM GOOOODDDDD
That moment when my comfort movie activates my fight or flight response. I'm about as comforted as every character in this movie and I love it.
It's currently the middle of the night and I am tired, but i guess sleep has to wait for another two hours.
Iron Lung, I'm coming.

i really love a lot of the comments on the phm subreddit
(canon typical discussion of suicide methods at the link)
I need a bloodymary AU where they return to earth and pick Mark Watney up from Mars on the way. It would be incredible funny if Mark was stranded on Mars for over a year and gets saved not only by the savieor of all of humanity who Marl studied about in school amd who should be dead, but also by a second dude who noone really knows where he comes from.
This also gives the opportunity for the following interaction:
Mark: Sure, you guys have been in space the longest. But I've been on Mars the longest.
Simon: I grew up on Mars.
Mark: Fuck.
I think Mark and Simon would get along really well and Grace would just have to deal with the amount of swearing.

Project Hail Mary is about how a single human life is worth sacrificing if it safes the entire human race.
The Martian is about how nothing is not worth sacrificing if it saves a single human life.
i just think throwing guys into space is good enrichment for them
