Dr. Dawn Hicks Tafari, "My Poetic Justice"
Heart to heart Soul to soul Her poetic hugs have filled all voids Her poetic smile has changed winter to spring Her poetic love has cured my grown-up blues She is poetry in motion My well-deserved, duly-earned treat A snack beyond snacks It's like the creator looked down And decided I've been good (enough) To earn such a reward A poem in human form Penned just for me To fill my life with a rapturous rhythm of realness Sweet, soul-satisfying stanzas Voluptuous, vivacious verses To make sense of these magnificent moments of mysticism Without poetry, There would be no way to explain how she moves me How anxious I get for her arrival How eager I am for her touch How I can just sit And watch her be beautiful

dear black girl,
if i could capture the stars, id pluck one right out of the sky and place it in your heart so you’d be reminded that you are filled with brightness. id capture your tears in jars and pour them into the sea so you’ll know that your feelings expressed in these droplets weren’t in vain, but that they will be recycled for only beauty and life, to be the reason behind art and reproduction. your smile will be used in dark, barren tunnels to light the way to a better truth. id tell you that your eyes tell a story and when listened to, they have the power to inspire by sharing the very things you’ve felt you could never say. id give you a magnifying glass so that you may discover the map your ancestors left for you to explore , painted on your skin. continue to shake the world by letting your voice be heard, because when you speak, the earth quakes.
