Honestly as a blind person Iâm so tired of seeing fictional blind characters who donât use white canes or other guides. âThey have special powers so they know whatâs around themâ or âtheyâre confident enough to not need a guideâ are common tropes, and Iâm tired.
Are people scared that using a white cane will make their blind character seem weak? They canât use a cane because theyâre so special that they already know whatâs around them, and other blind people who use guides are inferior because theyâre not special?
Iâm tired. Give your blind characters white canes and other guides. Let them hold onto their friends, let them have guide dogs. Donât make white cane users feel ostracized for not being âstrong enoughâ to go without.
Another thing that pisses me off is when a sighted character comes up with the fantasy equivalent of braille and teaches it to the blind character. Braille was invented by Louis Braille, a blind man, in 1824. The blind character should be the one coming up with it.

Welcome to some of my designs for the Hermit Pressure series! no color because i'm lazy, and these were just to help me get an idea of what i'm describing.
NOTES FOR BDUBS: - He doesn't wear a shirt! It damages the plant growth on his back, which hurts like hell. He's gotten used to jokes about it. - His DiVine growth is only *attached* to him about halfway down his back, he keeps where it hasn't grown on his back covered/suffocated with fabric or bandages so that it *won't* grow. - His PDG has small poles that push through the plant growth and help keep it from fully crushing what's grown.. not that that's gonna matter much pretty soon.
NOTES FOR GRIAN - This drawing makes him look a lot more broad than he actually is, still figuring out how to draw his build. He's unsafely skinny, actually, due to how much strain being in so many experiments + the watcher program puts on his body. - He can fly, and uses this ability to be the peskiest fucking bird in Urbanshade's cage. - Ever since he was told Boatem arrived, he hasn't taken his mask off at all. - His hands and feet have become almost indistinguishable, having been genetically and surgically modified. He still has opposable thumbs, though. - The watcher symbol is, in fact, flipped around. This was not an intentional choice. shhhhhhhhhh

so, im making a podfic of one of my own fics as a kind of practice/warmup for a WAY bigger project, and it's given me an even greater respect for every podfic author I've ever listened. the amount of time you have to spend re-recording even short lines because you goofed it or said it in a weird tone is WILD. getting timing right as you edit audio clips together, keeping your voice in relatively the same tone as you progress through each clip, like. holy shit. how do you guys do it.

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.
