(Not) falling in love at a coffee shop - Venwick
"Lo- Vector, I have always been charming. Never have changed. You just never noticed before, rather, you tend to ignore it.” He replied grinning, secretly hoping he didn’t hear the first syllable he uttered. He almost slipped. For heaven’s sake— He almost blurted out and called her Love — like the way he used to address her.. Merlin. This was getting difficult to handle. Control yourself, Benjy. Don’t make a fool out of yourself now. ”How can you say that after everything we’ve been through? I thought we’re friends.. Now I’m hurt.” Benjy looked up at her with a pout as he playfully clutched his heart.
“As I recall, I am not only charming. I’m humble too, and very good-looking.” He added with a chuckle. Great. He makes it no secret that he’s having so much fun. Way to go.
“Objection! You need carbohydrates for energy and you need fat— fats can be good in moderation, you need it to burn calories or in the end you’ll be burning your muscle. And what better way could you take them than having a croissant? You disappoint me. 10 points from Ravenclaw.” His lips were pressed together into a thin line as he spread butter onto the croissant. Ah, he had always loved the glorious smell of freshly baked pastry.. It just made his mouth water. He could almost hear it’s whispers of ‘Cmon, human. Eat me, eat me!’
"Seriously though.. Aren’t you gonna eat? You.. You lost weight since the last time I saw you. You wouldn’t want me buying you the biggest piece of croissant they have and have you eat the whole thing, would you?"
Benjy was busy chewing when he heard her statement, making him almost choke on his food. ”Exciting? No way!” His eyes widened. “I mean. That, I thought so too. But then I realized… Marriage is a nightmare! They fight like little kids! One moment you only hear screaming and then the next you hear vases shattering on the ground. Things get really heated every freaking minute! You have to trust me on this!”
Then, just in a blink of an eye, his emotions shifted. Surprisingly, there was no anger, no loneliness, no sorrow; there was nothing. He felt… hollow. Like a fire burnt down to one weak ember. The words were still bouncing around inside of him, the meaning not yet fully sunk in.
"So there’s a lucky guy… I knew it."
Liar. How silly of him to think that — Ugh. Of course, he should have seen that answer coming. Anything can happen. It was possible for any man to fall head over heels with her.. She’s Septima Vector, for Pete’s sake! Why was he thinking too much? A part of him wanted to beat whoever-her-new-man-is, throw him against the wall and choke the life out of him. He had seriously considered it. Another part wanted to accept it. It’s not like he could do something about it, right? As long as she’s happy.. Then he’d have to be happy for her, too.
Despite all of the commotion happening inside his mind, he continued to remain calm. “Is he someone I know?” Despite everything, he managed to smile. Boy, he was tough like that.
"with your ego as high as the Everest, how could I notice?" she trailed off laughing, hoping he wasn't offended or anything. "We've been through a lot, yes. Long enough for me to make my judgement, don't you think?" A smug grew on her face then gradually fading into a weak smile. Of course they've been through a lot. Nine months is a lot. Nine long beautiful months in which they made promises, love and conquer, and just do what lovers would do. Nine beautiful months all ended by painful goodbyes.
"huh. you are everything, aren't you?." With a sarcastic tone and a quirked brow, she resumed taking her tea sip by sip.
"Oh. no no no. I don't want to be debating about this. but it's simple human biology, Fenwick. Carbs and sugar, they give you calories. calories you have to burn, or they turn into fats. You need effort to burn these calories or your well toned arms will be sloppy and gross. So, in conclusion, no effort is exerted when you drink tea, and that's better than a croissant" Momentarily, She found herself giggling. Laughing about how ridiculous they were. Amusing herself with the thought of them just a month ago when they were passing break-up letters and probably cursing each other beneath their breathes. Now, they were seated at a coffee shop debating about croissants and calories. Well, aren't they a weird pair.
" and.. I'm not hungry." She spreads out her arms before her and examines them, then looks back at him." I have? well,I din't even notice."
She found herself more curious with his insights, tilting forward to show she was listening. "So clearly, marriage must be out of your context huh?" She waited for him to answer as she rested her chin on her hand and eyes darted at him.
She could feel her stomach turn and felt like she was suffocating. She din't know what she was doing, she knew it was wrong but it felt better to lie than to go all like- Oops just kidding, no boyfriend, because I'm totally not over you and I've spent the whole time moping about our broken love life. A part of her wanted to take back all but she knew she wanted to play this game. Just for once, she wanted to appear independent and capable of moving on, even if that meant lying.
"uh. he's an old friend of mine, way back in primary school.. He couldn't be anyone you know." She could feel her handshake as she uttered her words. "Uh. so, there must be a lot of Greek yoghurt in Greece huh." She sounded stupid but she couldn't care any more. All she wanted at that moment was to avoid further questions from him about her "boyfriend".
Wow... awkward....
Please don’t see me, please don’t see me….
yah... uh.. I could pretend like I din't see you, and slowly leave? yeah?
