[Coco] Showtime
Title: Showtime Summary: Honestly, ‘Ernesto’ and ‘stage fright’ had no business being in the same sentence at all. And yet there they were. Characters: Ernesto de la Cruz, Héctor Rivera Rating: K
A/N: I wrote this fic for @tomato-bitch for the Cocolocos server Valentine Exchange. I, uh, hope you like it?
***
“Come on! Let’s show them!”
“Neto, wait!”
“What, are you afraid?”
Of course, Héctor was aware he was being baited; Ernesto was terrible at subtlety - sure he was, everything about him was so forward and loud and in-your-face - and even aged six, he could tell.
On the other hand, there is no worse insult for a little boy than the implication he might be afraid of something, and Héctor had no choice but to respond precisely the way Ernesto wanted.
“I’m not afraid!” he protested, and it wasn’t even a lie. He was not afraid of attention - he didn’t even dislike attention - only that he didn’t see the thrill in seeking it out. Also, it kind of sucked that Ernesto got to stand on the crate and sing while he was there to bang on a pot. And probably look very dumb while doing so.
“Then let’s go, come on!” Ernesto huffed, grabbing his sleeve and pulling him along. “Ugh, you’re such a pain, may as well go at it alone!”
Now that was something that really stung, really scared him: Héctor didn’t want to be left behind. “I’m not a pain! I can help!” he protested, his voice breaking up a little, which in turn made him feel even more embarrassed.
It caused Ernesto to pause and turn, letting go of his arm. “No no no– wait, don’t cry, come on,” he muttered, bending his knees to be at his same eye level, the day Héctor would surpass him in height still far away in time. “I didn’t mean it. I’m not going to really go at it alone. Wouldn’t be Héctor y Ernesto without Héctor, no?”

“and Ernesto lied….”
Aaaaah dat art, thank you!! : D
#oh hell that’s sinister #I love how if one hasn’t seen the movie they could completelymisread that ending
The funny part is that this works both for people who have not seen Coco, but also for the characters in-universe if Ernesto hadn’t made That One Movie Where He Re-enacted The Murder For Some Reason.
Nunca olvides cuánto te ama tu familia.

Definitely Remember Me. It’s his most popular song! It’s too popular.
[Coco] Heaven and Earth - Ashes
Title: Ashes. Summary: The first time Ernesto stopped Héctor from going home, it was to save his life. [If I’d returned home with them, this wouldn’t have happened.] Characters: Héctor Rivera, Ernesto de la Cruz, Imelda Rivera
Other fics from the series can be found here.
A/N: It’s been… months since I last posted anything for this series, but I finally got there. Better late than never. I think. Art by Dara!

The Revolution did not end in July 1914.
The Federal Army would keep going, aimless and weakened, for another month before disbanding. That didn’t mark the end of it, either; too many factions, too many factors at play; unrest and violence would continue to cause ripples throughout Mexico for years to come.
But in Santa Cecilia, on one bright July morning, no one knew that. All they knew was that something was over at last, that Huerta was gone - fucked off abroad, they said, and to hell with him and his mano de hierro - and that was good enough reason to celebrate.
Oh, did they celebrate.
There was food, there were drinks, there was music and dancing. Everyone with an instrument had brought it out, and Héctor and Ernesto were right in the middle of it, guitar in hand and singing their heart out. Héctor had never felt so much relief at once; it was almost like being drunk, while knowing there would be no headache to follow the wonderful sensation.
He sang, he played, and occasionally caught sight of Imelda, who was dancing around with other girls, laughing and sometimes looking back at him, her smile so wide.
We won, that smile told him, and Héctor smiled back.

The look of love….
Coco (2017) dir. Lee Unkrich
You know what I love about this scene?
Miguel is right. The first time I watched it, I expected a later scene where Miguel was proven wrong or shown the error of his ways—one where it’s firmly established that adults might make rules that don’t make sense, but they have their reasons and it’s best to abide by their wishes.
But no. That doesn’t happen. Instead, we see that Imelda’s insistence on the music ban, and her refusal to reconsider, indirectly (or perhaps directly) land Miguel in even greater danger, as he wouldn’t have gone after de la Cruz were it not for Imelda insisting he give up music forever. The happy ending comes not when Miguel agrees to give up music to please his family, but when he defies the ban to save Héctor and restore Mama Coco’s memories.
I can’t tell you how many kid’s movies I’ve seen that would have taken “Family comes first” to mean “The adults’ wishes are paramount even if they’re unreasonable.” It would have been so easy to have Miguel simply go along with what Imelda wanted, but Pixar instead gave us a story where a child’s decision to contest an unfair rule is what eventually restores a broken family.
Even reading about this movie makes me tear up
imelda’s lipstick gets everywhere
“You lied to me!”
“Oh YOU’RE one to talk!”
You know how sometimes your sketchbooks have a weak spot in the binding and they always open to the same page? On mine it’s this page. When I do programs for teens and they flip through my sketchbooks, this is often the first page they open to, and I just go with it. “IS COCO NOT THE GREATEST MOVIE IN THE WORLD?” And I’ve been really impressed with the number of high schoolers who go “OH MY GOD YES.”
