High school AU headcanons / semi fanfiction
As a thirteen year old, Hange is already wearing a pair of spectacles and she loves it, because her vision of the world became clearer with it. No more squinting! The frames are purple because she couldn’t make her mind between pink and blue, so a mix of both appeals to her. When someone asks her what she will be when she grows up, she’ll say with absolute confidence that she will be a scientist. She wants to know how the world works, and then share it with everyone. She envisions her future as one in lab coats, checking up specimens in microscopes and making discoveries everyday.
When she is fourteen years old, she breaks her spectacles in a fight with a school bully named Djel. But before she can throw a punch, Moblit stops her. Hange cools down when she realizes that Moblit has come for her, and so does not want to fight Djel anymore. She tells Djel to stop his nonsense and then goes to a local cafe with Moblit.
Then, Mobilt tells Hange about the wonders of contact lenses, but Hange still thinks that spectacles are way more cooler. She likes wearing them and she thinks that it makes her face looks better with glasses. And as a teenager who is still grappling with the concept of her own identity, Hange is a little conscious of her hooked nose, but wearing spectacles make her feel more confident. The spectacles are like her super powers.
That evening, the same day as the fight, her mom takes her to the optometrist and they find out that the purple glasses are broken beyond repair and it is cheaper to replace. So they decide on a new pair of baby blue frames.
At fifteen Hange’s spectacles ‘powers’ increases, but that does not make her gloom long. She promises to take better care of her eyes and sight, to look at green things and eat more veges. She also had more friends now, she even manages to befriend the resident gloom student, Levi. A teacher sends them to detention one day because Hange accidentally soaked Levi with a pail of water that one day the clean the classroom and Levi soaks her back with a wet mop. They made amends, and now Levi listens to her talk about stuff she recently knew about while he finishes his homeworks after school.
At sixteen Hange had a clearer vision of her future in her mind. She wants to be an animal scientist, she asked if Moblit will be there in the future to work with her. But Moblit said he can’t because he is setting for early graduation and is moving away. His parents received promotions to work overseas. Of course Hange is sad, Moblit is her bestest friend and he often comes to save her arse from so many things. However, Moblit reassures that he will return, and probably as a nurse in the local hospital. He is passionate about working with people. Hange sits there stunned and is in awe, but she now has a vision of her in the future as an adult one, with a broken feet being attended by Moblit at the hospital. They wish each other luck and goes their separate ways while Hange stays and researches about possible University she can attend.
At seventeen, Hange still wore a blue pair of spectacles, but another new pair. She stepped on the old ones while cleaning up her room. So she buys a new pair from the salary of her summer job. Hange is working as a data entry clerk for a scientist officemate of her mom, putting all kinds of data she thinks she understands into a statistics computer program.
She changes her spectacles frame every other years, changing the colour of the frame each time. Her vision will forever be framed by spectacles, but certainly not limited by it because she envisions a future with a lot of knowledge. Maybe when she learns to swim, she will order a pair of prescriptive swimming goggles, and then she gets to have a look at what is happening under the sea which is a whole new vision to her. That brings her mind to a new idea, maybe she study to be a marine biologist. She visions a lot of things and they all make her smile brightly.
