“unreliable narrator” doesn't mean “everything they said was a lie.” in the rare cases a narrator IS lying, there's indications of what the truth is. writers are ultimately trying to tell a story, lol
An unreliable narrator is like those mirror goggles little kids like that turns everything upside down, or coloured lenses that make everything green. The narrator acts as a filter which the author uses to bring novelty, interest, tension or drama to the story, but you still need to be able to see the story. Parts of it might be obscured, but they need to be obscured in ways that the obfuscation makes sense and can be figured out by the audience if they remember the lens they’re looking through. If you’re just straight-up obscuring their vision, hiding the story to the point you’re not telling it, that’s not useful.
An unreliable narrator is a fun coloured/mirrored lens, NOT a blindfold. If you’re gonna blindfold your reader, you’re just wasting their time and yours.
Also, half the fun is when the narrator is blatantly unreliable.
I submit: character takes off their glasses when shit gets real, patiently cleans them, puts them back on with a weary sigh, goes completely feral
(chuckle) Yeah, this.
“Shh, it’s alright,” the villain said. “You’re doing beautifully and I’m so proud of you. But that’s enough now. It was cruel of them to make you fight me - you could never have won. It’s not your fault.”
The ancient and powerful villain may have had a calm and gentle face as he spoke, but he was furious, not at the hero, but the gods for continually sending kids and teenagers to fight their battles.

movie tropes that will never get old to me:
a thing happens + two people exchanging money in the back
fourth wall breaking
“give up all your weapons” and that one guy that spends the entire evening taking his weights worth out his pockets
*a terribly loud crash* meowing/ car sirens heard offscreen
alternatively: a terribly loud crash and one of the characters going “oops” in the most casual voice
“fuck you” “well if you insist”

character being all “you expect me to do X?” Gilligan Cut to character doing X
the squad gets captured and interrogated separately, and they’re all telling equally terrible, completely contradictory lies
people completely missing the completely unsubtle, very visible dangerous thing in the room with them
alternatively, people absolutely seeing the completely unsubtle, very visible dangerous thing in the room with them and just not giving a shit
bonus points if it’s a beleaguered minimum wage employee who just goes about their business like “yep same shit as always”
someone pretending they don’t know another character is eavesdropping, only to casually reveal at the end of the scene that they know (*leaving* “tell tom that he can come out now” *tom drops from the ceiling in spy gear, irritated*)
choosing to deal with the villain by just leaving them alone in a room with another character
the “hands go down” trope
example: “any questions?” *everyone’s hands go up* “…that AREN’T sarcastic?” *everyone’s hands go down*
how could all y'all forget “ACT NATURAL!”
These are all great but let’s not forget two characters giving extremely biased flashbacks to the same event that each paint the other as an incompetent loon
i would like to respectfully add: scenes where a character walks into a room, sees something scary, and turns around and walks out with no reaction or change of expression
Bonus points if he DOES react, but it’s to close the door and tell his buddy “it’s for you.”
Intentionally getting wrong easy-to-pronounce names (“It’s Sean, isn’t it?” “Dude. It’s John.”)
That one character who is like actively dying but insists they’ve had worse and wants to keep fighting
Knocking down a big group of opponents with a bowling ball sound effect
Convenient book titles (“Plot-Related Thing for Dummies”)
Characters giving a flashback and voicing all the characters themselves
ALL OF THESE
Or when someone is recounting an event and said “that went well” and the event was a complete disaster
Or when Person B says Person A would never do XYZ and cuts instantly to Person A doing exactly XYZ
Or when someone is talking about someone they love and how beautiful and amazing they are and instantly cuts to them being dorks
Or when Person A is saying ughh I cant believe we went through all that work (usually a heist) and didn’t find Item A (an item which would help them out a lot) and they are complaining to Person B about it and Person B instantly pulls it out saying they found it just hanging outside
Very Good Trope: Civillian is told “ stay in the car” while hero goes to confront villain. Hero gets in over head and all seems disaster. Civillian crashes car into villain.
Me, watching: ohhohoho! But they stayed in the car! Yesss, this is very good!
Half the fun is that they followed the letter of the order while violating the spirit. The other half is watching Chekhov's Civillian smash through the wall.

"A cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickedness or crime."
Sometimes, people snap. Whether by their nature, circumstance, or something outside their control altogether, some turn towards actions that are not morally sound.
There are many ways to measure a villain. Are they depraved? Malicious? Are they able to have a civil conversation with others? Do they come from a background of wealth or destitution? Do they enjoy what they do? Do they feel that they need to do it? Do they feel forced into the role?
And in the context of a story, one of the biggest questions you can ask is "How is the villain an obstacle to the Hero?"
Archetype: The Hero
"Defined as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities."
Despite people becoming jaded towards heroes, and the number of deconstructions on the trope (looking at you, Homelander), there are still those people who continue to fight and do good in the world.
But heroes are people too. They have flaws. Vices. Idiosyncrasies. Tics. They're not perfect. Sometimes they fuck up. Sometimes they fail. But the important part is that when disaster struck, they stepped up without regard for their own well being. When facing down impossible odds, the hero is the one who stands their ground to fight regardless.
And sometimes, they even win.
A lot of times, it's that spark of hope that keeps us going.
video game levels where you attend a masquerade held by a rich and powerful political figure only to sneak away upstairs and into the servants' quarters for investigation and murder purposes while stuffing your pockets with everything not bolted in place truly are the best kinds of levels
Story Archetype: The Heist.
An absolute classic, one that has been done to death, lampooned, parodied, subverted, double subverted, and twisted into pretzels. Some may criticize, but as with everything, the strength of the story is the strength of the writers.
