When I pointed out to my friend that people are so disconnected from the process meat is made they refuse to look at photos of slaughterhouses but will happily admire meat dishes she pointed out that it's the same with photos of giving birth, the process is considered too graphic to fully show but people would post photos of newborn babies and it's more of a cultural thing than a sign of anything being wrong. Thoughts?
I think this is a false equivalency. Many people find childbirth too painful and graphic to watch, that is true, largely because someone is suffering, and most of us struggle to watch that. As a spectator though, you are not morally responsible for that suffering, and unless you’re the father, a medical professional or a birthing partner you’re not morally obliged to bare witness to it. As a meat eater though, you are the cause of the suffering you refuse to watch.
Besides, the two cases are different because thsre is no moral aspect to childbirth; if the sex and resulting pregnancy was consensual then there is no victim and no perpetrator. When an animal is being slaughtered because people want to eat their flesh, the animal is the victim and those who create the demand are the perpetrators, so they bare responsibility for what is happening. I won’t watch footage of animal slaughter anymore, because I don’t eat animals. But if you do, then you should know exactly how that animal arrives on your plate; you don’t get to opt out of the consequences of your actions.
