It was weird, living in town. Of course, it would be more beneficial for Fawn to live in town, what with her job and all. However, Pixie Hollow was her home and her world. Yes, she was still keeping her house there and would still occupy it every once in awhile; Yet the brunette knows that this would be a smart idea. Unfortunately, the young fairy began to second guess that as she tried to carried two rather big and slightly heavy boxes to her new apartment. She’d been about to reach for some pixie dust in her pouch in her back pocket when all of the sudden, the boxes were soon shaking at the sudden movement. “Oh shit oh shit oh shit- help!”

Peach’s eyes lit up at Fawn’s words, her smile spreading bright and triumphant across her face.

Though, really, that should be an obvious fact. Horses were like that too. Lots of magical animals preferred to be more solitary, while others preferred groups. Just depending on their intelligence and sentient level. They couldn’t always be compared to their Mundus counterparts.

This made Peach delighted. “Thank you!” she called after Dr. Tumbleclaw as she disappeared. She wasn’t above manners, if it would get her what she wanted in the end. She even listened as this bright and bubbly girl (Joy, was it? Bit of an on the nose name), gave her the lowdown on the food.

It was an easy job. A baby could do it. It felt degrading, especially for free, but she had that unicorn fact dancing tantalizingly in her brain and she wanted more. So, she nodded and filled up the dishes exactly as they should be without a grain of kibble out of place.

Obvious and basic fact? Yes. It wasn’t like she was going to outright admit that a Unicorn’s horn can be any colour, not just gold or iridescent as some fiction have stated. That was a more so powerful fact and Fawn needed Peach to earn and prove herself before reaching such facts.

After doing her own little check up on their newest resident (a Jack Russel Terrier-Chihuahua mix around six weeks old), Fawn noticed that it was about time to check up on the girls. Deciding to bring the puppy with her, she headed to the room and poked her head in.

“Knock knock,” she announced her presence with a smile, entering the room with the puppy giving out a little excited yip. Joy had gasped in delight at the pup, already wanting to hold him. “How’s everything going, you two?”

His eyebrows rose at her quick response. As she continued the lines on his face softened in understanding. He had taken her words in the wrong manner, something to which was becoming a more common occurrence now that he was venturing out of the Hollow more often as he awaited the arrival of other frost fairies from his Glade. Language never took a moment to rest it seemed.

“I see,” Milori nodded curtly, pressing his lips together. No he was not one to get embarrassed so easily over a miscommunication. Had he been younger it would have been more plausible, but with age he had learned that such trivial faux pas. 

“No, please, it is I who should be apologizing. Forgive me, for it was my misunderstanding,” he said holding up a hand to calm her. He smiled and shook his head. “I’m happy to know they give you no trouble then. Or, should I say that they only give you trouble when you are present.”

She was young and tend to forget that her humor and more of the older fairies humors were far different. She and her father shared the same humor, but he was young compared to Milori, so it was more so expectant. And perhaps when she’s around the same age as the fairy lord and she would be talking to a fairy around her current age in the future, she won’t understand that fairy’s humor either.

Wow, thinking about the future is rather scary and intimidating. She should not do that often, no sirree. Fawn smiled at the lord’s words, nodding a little. “That most certainly happens. And I hope that none of the fairies and animals give you any trouble in the Glade, as well.” Typically, Fawn was one of the more so troublemaker type of fairies; However, she knows when to behave when speaking with a fairy lord.

Forest Dwellers | Perry & Fawn

Aching back, muddy feet, twitching fingers, dry mouth. Glaring sunshine, forest floor, morning. Human. Perry. Detective. That was the order things came to him in. He threw an arm over his eyes to hide from the sun and lay there a few moments, just getting used to his body again. It was his left favorite day of the month. He did have to concede to his grumbling stomach eventually though and he scrambled to his feet, pulling twigs out of his hair and brushing dirt off his jeans.

Ordinarily of course Perry was a well put together man, but post-platypus mornings found him bare footed and muddy and if nothing else it was an enlightening look into how people judged based on appearance. He made his way out of the woods, stopping to collect his wallet- buried in a small wooden box he’d attached to the bottom of a rock- and headed off towards the diner. Breakfast food. He didn’t know what time of the day it was, but Perry wanted scrambled eggs and sausages and toast.

He rubbed his back as he walked and was grumbling about how ridiculous it was to put a Platypus in a small forest in England and wasn’t at all paying attention, which explains why he knocked into a young woman. “Sorry, I-” His voice was hoarse, he hadn’t had anything to drink yet. Perry coughed, “sorry, I should’ve been looking where I was going. Do you happen to have the time?”

Honestly, she loves mornings and days like today: Soft, subtle breeze; Warm morning sun, not yet blaring down on the earth; The daytime animals starting to wake up while her more nocturnal friends were beginning to go to bed and rest for the day; Not having to go into work that day and just relax. It was perfect, really. Of course, she does love her job greatly but it is nice to get a day off every now and then. 

Today, though, was a really special day. After thinking about it, Fawn has decided to get an apartment in town. She would still keep her home in Pixie Hollow, of course, but living in town would make getting to work easier. She was going to spend her Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at her home in Pixie Hollow, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at her apartment in Swynlake, and then switch homes every other Thursday. It’d be perfect.

Fawn had been heading towards the apartment complex, looking down at her phone to find the message that contained information on the complex, when she ran into another body. “Oh god, I’m so sorry!” She replied at the same time, looking up at the man. “Me too, sorry again. Oh, yeah, it’s eight fifteen.” She finally noticed his slightly rugged demeanor, furrowing her brows slightly. She could smell the forest on him, along with something else. Something more... Well, something like an animal. Maybe she’s been at the vet’s too much, but her instincts were saying something else. There was something rather familiar about him.

His expression changed to displeasure when she spoke of the animals gossiping about her. Of course he’d had to deal with much of the same thing, though those who spoke on him behind his back were those in the Winter Glade. Or now, those in the Hollow. At one time he had worried over it until the Lord before him had taught him that if he were going to take the role he could not let such a thing get to him to easily. 

Milori’s frown was not directed at her as much as it was directed to the thought of the animals she helped and cared for speaking to one another about her. As gossip to him meant that they were not talking about her in a positive light but in one that was more harmful. 

“I should hope not,” he said, eyeing the squirrel. “If they respect you, as they should, they would have no need to speak to one another about you in such a way.” 

Oh, fuck. This wasn’t what she had intended when she said that the animals were potentially gossiping about her. Fawn had just been kidding, hoping to have get the fairy lord to laugh a little at how unfunny it was with her. Whoops, whoops, whoops. She’s gotta fix this. Now.

“I was joking!” she quickly said with a shake of her head. “I know that they don’t gossip about me; Seriously, I’d ground them if they were to ever do that disrespect to me. I was just trying to be funny and evidently turned out to not be.”

She had gently reached up to pet Pesky, sort of a habit by now. If she felt awkward and had one of her babies with her, she would reach out and caress them. God, she was such a mum. “I’m sorry, I should have clarified that a bit better.”

On the contrary to what Fawn thought, Peach was interested in any information she could get on the fairy. Knowing more about fairies would be great for her (Miss Bianca’s) book. And knowing about her personal life would be good leverage too, if she ever needed it.

But, she didn’t say anything, just pursed her lips a little and smiled. 

Her eyebrows went up as she flicked her gaze up and down this Joy girl. She’d heard about her from some kids at school that had had Mr. Hepburn as a teacher. She had dead parents. That sucked. Peach had dead parents too. (Well, technically she didn’t know, but that was what she was telling people.) Should she tell this Joy girl that? Maybe they could bond.

“Nice to meet you too,” she chirped, friendly as ever, big smile on her face.

She listened attentively to Fawn’s instructions–she didn’t want to be the reason a dog got sick. And Peach could be observant and detail-oriented if she wanted to. It was only when she was bored that she wasn’t. And, even though this was boring, at least she’d be getting something out of it in the end.

Peach was just rolling up her sleeves getting ready to dive in when Joy popped her head back out of the office and Peach turned towards her, raising her eyebrows slightly.

“Yes, Dr. Tumbleclaw?” she asked sweetly, giving Fawn her best doe-eyed innocent look. 

Fawn couldn’t help but to smile a little bit. She was a woman of her word and she did promise to give the kid some information. Just, she won’t be giving them out all at once. She’s not going to info dump on this girl, though it is clearly obvious that that’s what she might have been hoping for. Oh well. Beggars can’t be choosers. And at least the fairy was getting a little bit of something (okay, and some enjoyment as well) out of this.

“Unicorns... Travel in herds, much like any wild horse. There are a few rare cases of a lone unicorn, but they’re rather sociable creatures. They travel in herds of around twelve to twenty-four.”

See? She’s giving the girl what she wants. Just not all at once.

Smiling brightly- and was that a twinkle of mischief in the doctor’s eyes?-, the brunette continued her way as she called back, “Be back soon.”

Joy just looked at Peach with a raised brow, yet she didn’t pester the girl. “Alright! I’ve done five bowls already and we just need to do five more. I’ve highlighted the patients that are here and have checked off those who already have their bowls; Fortunately, these last five all eat the same brand. You can work on the last five while I wash up some dishes.”

Milo’s eyes went wide at what Fawn told him and he looked back at Fluffy, the tears still gathering on the rim of his eyes. He wasn’t really that surprised, honestly. Fluffy was one for many pranks, whether it was– something like this or just hiding under something and batting at his ankles when he walked by.

But something like this felt cruel and unusual, even to Milo. Et tu, Fluffy? He wanted to ask her with trembling lip. Et tu, my only friend?

Fluffy just lashed her tail, staring him down with her hard green eyes. And he knew what she was thinking. He deserved it.

Yes, yes, he did deserve it. He deserved this and Fluffy deserved better.

Milo looked back at Fawn at her next words though, and his stomach dropped and twisted. “Wh-whatever she said, dont’ believe her, she’s a compulsive liar,” he blurted.

“HAH– me, the liar? That’s rich,” meowed Fluffy.

“Shhh, Fluffy!” squeaked Milo.

Fluffy rolled her eyes. “Drama queen.”

“Hey... Here,” she responded as she held out a box of Kleenex to him. “Holding it in is only going to make it hurt more. I won’t judge. And if someone were to walk by and saw through the window that you were crying and were to ask me about it, I’ll just say that you got wonderful news about Fluffy and were crying tears of joy. Crying happens here a lot, one reason or another.”

God, this must really suck. She doesn’t like seeing anybody like this, making her want to do anything to help out. But she knows that sometimes, crying is the best thing. It’s good to release that negative energy out sometimes.

Hearing the exchange, she sighed a little before exclaiming, “Enough, you two. Arguing- and calling each other names- is not going to help with anything, okay?”

Looking back at Milo, she shook her head. “It’s not something for me to talk about,” she responded softly. “It’s your personal life and it’s not right for me to be poking around in it. I just... wanted to let you know that Fluffy told me. And that I hope that you’ll be okay soon. The most I can do right now is to give you some methods on how to help keep up with Fluffy’s dietary needs and with keeping her little box cleaned. It’s not much, but it can hopefully ease the load on your shoulders a little bit.”

Peach took the name tag and wrote her name down the sharpie bleeding onto her jeans, not that she really cared, they were an old pair that she was wearing knowing that she’d probably get them dirty. (Ugh.) 

It was no matter–Peach was determined now. She wanted to meet a unicorn. And not one of the ones that agreed to be part of the petting zoo that she had heard about, but a real unicorn. Out in the wild. 

Was she sure that Fawn knew about these unicorns? No, but she was the best lead she had. 

Imagine if she could bring Miss Bianca pictures to put in the book! Or just for the RAS in general. Pictures of unicorns must be helpful. 

When Fawn showed up, Peach beamed and slapped her name tag onto her chest, puffing that chest of hers out some.

“Yes, ma’am,” Peach chirped popping up and following behind Fawn down the bright hallway.

“Soooo, you’re a fairy then? I haven’t met a fairy yet. What kind of fairy? Are you an animal-talent fairy? That would make sense, wouldn’t it?” Peach rambled, knowing it was probably impolite to ask but not really caring. It’s not like she was being mean, just curious. What was wrong with that?

“Whoaaa there, I thought you wanted to learn more about unicorns, not my personal life?” Fawn couldn’t help but to laugh a little at the eagerness, raising a brow at the girl. “But yes, I am an animal-talent fairy. It really helps with the job at times, but that’s not what we’re here to talk about.”

Leading her to one of the rooms, she smiled as at one of their longest working volunteers. “Hey Joy, this is Peach. Today’s her first day, so could you help guide her a bit?” The brunette grinned at the vet before nodding, “Yeah, absolutely! It’s very nice to meet you, Peach. Welcome to the team!”

Grinning, she looked back at the younger girl. “Joy’s job is to feed our canine residents, ensuring that each patient gets the right bowl, the right kibble, and the right amount of kibble. There is a chart that has our patient’s name, their kibble brand, and how many ounces on it to help guide you. All of our bowls have been labelled to help you out with which bowl goes to which patient. Now, most of our canines eat the same brand so that should be helpful, but there are some who need to eat a different brand due to dietary needs. It’s very important that you give the right kibble and the right amount of kibble to the right dog, or else they could become very sick. The bowls are mainly due to the pups just having a personal favourite. Joy’s been here for almost ten months and can help you out if need be. I’ll be in my office doing some paperwork and will check up on you in an hour. Good luck, you’re going to be great.”

Fawn was right back to walk out the door when she stopped, looking over her shoulder at the young girl. “Oh, and Peach?”

He looked up at the tree as she spoke, regarding it with a fond smile. Surely the Oak was, and has been, home to many animals over the years. Just as the one that was the foundation of the Hollow in Enchantra provided for the fairies. Nature was always willing to give so much for them. 

“That is always how it goes,” he mused, looking back down to her. “One minute they don’t want to leave and the next they never want to return.”

At least, that’s how it went for him and those animals he had helped. 

“I trust he is not the only one of his kind staying here?” Milori asked, glancing around them towards the other trees. 

“Like children,” she laughed, smiling fondly. She truly loves these little creatures so, so much. They meant the world to her.

Fawn nodded, looking back at the tree. “There are five other grey squirrels with him, plus a variety of robins, two chipmunks, and even an owl. Funny enough, a lot of them have been animals that I’ve helped taken care of or have at least done a few check ups on them.”

Thinking about it, she let out a small laugh before looking back at the fairy lord. “I can’t help but to wonder if they ever gossip about me. They probably do, but I’m not sure. And this one,” she exclaimed, referring to Pesky, “would never tell me if they did or not.”

It was scary, that was very true. Silver had never really been out of the Hollow except for a few excursions here or there. She didn’t know how to use a cellphone or the internet or a cash register, either. But, she really did want to learn. She was fascinated by all of it. And she had spent a lot of time with tinker-talent fairies and they had shown her a whole bunch about how certain things worked mechanically.

She smiled softly, her shoulders concaving a little at Fawn’s words. Her fingers fiddled with themselves in her lap. 

“Thank you, Fawn,” she murmured and then looked up at her and smiled wider. “That means so much to hear! Especially from someone who is doing as well as you are. Gosh, I wish I could be doing that well. I’m going to work hard, though, and give it my best shot.”

“It’s good to have friends that will help you, though! Isn’t it?” 

“Trust me, when I was first starting out I was a bit of a mess. College, working two then three jobs, vet school, making sure that my home was in good shape after I inherited it from my parents so that they could move in town with my mama, and also trying to have a life of my own; It was not easy. But, it’s a part of growing up and being an adult. It rough now and there are still those rough days even after having an order of things for awhile, but it does get easier.”

Wow... She feels pretty deep right now. She most definitely wasn’t sure where that came from, but it was pretty true. She was turning twenty-seven soon and she excited to see what life was going to throw her way.

“It truly is! Honestly, friends what help me feel the most sane on days in which I feel like I’m about to lose my mind. Remember that I got you and that most people are willing to help you out.”

Fluffly lashed her tail again, huffing a small breath. Only Milo would understand such a noise– animal talent family or no. And so he looked up, still feeling exhausted, his eyes watery and red, and wondered what Fawn could have said to agitate her so.

But luckily, Fluffy didn’t lash out as she normally would. She meowed instead.

“Alright, alright. I suppose that’s better than nothing.” Her nose quivered and she sniffed, turning her head to the side.

“Is…everything okay? What did she say?” asked Milo.

Fawn readied herself, in case she needed to get out of Fluffy’s fury if she happened to attack. However, a sigh of relief let her lips as the cat agreed with her and she relaxed a little bit. “Thank you,” she replied, giving the kitten a small smile before looking at Milo.

“Well, it turns out that all the rumors are right, Doctor Thatch: Fluffy is one mischievous kitten,” the vet said as she tucked some stray hairs behind her ear. “There’s no need to worry. After some coaxing on my part, she finally told me that it was all an act. That it was her way of getting back at you for the past couple of days. 

“We came to an agreement, though: If I helped give you some feeding and litter cleaning methods in case you were to be late coming home again, you forgot, or for whatever reason, she’ll back off on her punishing you.” Fawn looked down at Fluffy again, biting her bottom lip. Should she mention that she knows about his girlfriend? Then again, she doesn’t know the man nor does she probably know his girlfriend. But Fluffy did mention it to her and it’d seem wrong not to make him aware that she knows. But maybe everyone in town already knows?

Ugh, her head hurts. “She... She also told me something else...”

The corner of Will’s mouth quirked up as they gestured to their back. “Sure do, except they weren’t like yours. I can’t like, pop them out unless I…have you ever seen magical girl anime? It’s kind of like a magical girl transformation sequence, except real life.”

“Sounds lame, I know. But yes, my magical girl transformation comes with wings.”

She wasn’t a big movie or television watcher, much too restless to just sit down and watch something for a long period of time. Nature docs and shows are a bit different, though. “I’ve seen a few videos on YouTube, but yeah, I know what you mean. It’s not lame at all! It sounds much cooler than just ye olde popping wings out method.”
