New On the Job {Sauna}

Fauna had been picking up more shifts at the flower shoppe in recent days. With the school year getting closer and closer to being over, Fauna needed some distractions. The end of the year was a bittersweet time for her. Because on one hand, she was so excited to see her little blossoms bloom into beautiful flowers and move on into the next chapter of their lives. But on the other hand,  she was going to miss them all so much that it was always such a sad time for Fauna.

So she had to distract herself with something else that she loved. That being the shoppe and helping others foster little plants. It was getting to be summer, and the influx of customers who wanted to decorate their yards or their gardens with flowers had been through the roof. 

This particular shift that Fauna had picked up was because she had learned there was a new hire! It was so exciting, and what was even more exciting was that this new hire was someone that the red-head already knew back from the hollow! 

Fauna was ecstatic!

She was more than thrilled to help her find her footing in the little shoppe, knowing that if anyone was going to be a good addition to the family that it would be Silvermist. Fauna had arrived to the store early that day, wanting to make sure she had everything set out and ready to go, but not everything so she could show Silvermist the ropes. When she saw the door open, Fauna smiled wide. “Silvermist! Oh it’s so wonderful to see you! I’m so excited that you’re going to be working here!” She cheered, fluttering over towards the girl.

When Silver had found out that Fauna worked at the shoppe, she was both excited and worried. Excited because having another fairy around was always nice. She was trying not to depend on them so much, but it was good to know that they were around and that at some point they had gone through the same thing she was going through.

And if they could adjust, so could Silver!

She already had a job, which was a really big and good step, according to everyone she talked to. Her parents, even, had been excited for her when she’d told them. Which was nice, because she didn’t know how they would feel. But, they were supportive so far!

And now, she was about to get trained by Fauna--which was worrying, because Fauna was super nice, but she was also a garden fairy, which meant she knew sooo much more about plants than Silver ever would. Her powers weren’t super useful in this job, which was weird to her, because Silver had always used her powers to do what needed to be done.

So, she was nervous as Fauna spotted her and fluttered over. 

“Hi, Fauna!” she said with a little wave, smiling small. “It’s nice to see you. I’m excited too!”

Happy that they’d reached an agreement - with how great they both were at negotiations  and all - Terence walked into the shop and looked around. He knew what they were going there for, of course, but it was always fun to look around.

Eventually, Sil pointed to a rotary phone and Terence shook his head. “No, that’s a hipster phone,” he explained. “People put those in their homes to feel more interesting, but they’re not really useful or convenient. With cell phones, you can carry them in your pocket. Much easier, to be honest!”

The blond turned and approached the counter, where a glass covered a shelf filled with the latest models of all sorts of price ranges. “These are cell phones. Most of them do the same, really. You don’t need the most expensive sorts.”

A hipster...? Was that a person who tried to make themselves seem more interesting? Why would they try to do that? Wasn’t everyone interesting? In their own, very special way? 

She just shrugged a little and bounced to Terence’s side, looking into the case with all the rectangles. They weren’t very impressive to her, even if they were very shiny. Most of them were just black or white, no color or anything to them.

“They’re rather boring aren’t they?” she tilted her head. “But if these are the ones that you say I should have! I defer to your judgement, good sir.” She smiled at Terence.

Moana lett out a soft sigh before shaking her head. She could really just take a step back and let this girl figure it out on her own. That would be the easier way after all. How could you explain something so pesstimistic to someone so optimistic.

“Well think about it like this, If I knew you would help I would just push my work aside and not do it because I knew you would help when you were down. I would be taking advantage of you if I did that.”

“It’s not bad to help, quite nice indeed but others aren’t and won’t be as nice as you.”

Silver’s brow furrowed again. 

It didn’t make sense to her, you see, that someone simply wouldn’t do their duties because someone else was going to. In the Hollow, everyone took pride in their job. They wanted to do a good job. And, when someone offered help, of course they were glad for it, but they weren’t expecting it. 

This must be one of those strange human things that didn’t really make any sense to Silver. She wanted to ask more about it--

Why would you not want to do anything? Wouldn’t that be boring? 

She probably shouldn’t ask too many questions. She didn’t want Moana to get mad at her and not give her the job.

“Oh, okay,” Silvermist said, still sounding doubtful, but she gave a nod. “I’ll make sure to keep an eye out for that! Though, I’m sure no one who works here would do something like that.” She smiled wide.

Terence laughed indeed, because that was exactly his sort of humour. “Yes, those are the rectangles,” he responded with a nod. “You can use them for a lot of stuff nowadays, so it’s like having a tiny computers. Uh, a computer is another, larger sort of rectangle,” he joked, though truly wondered if Sil would know.

“There’s actually a place nearby where they sell phones, if you want us to stop by. It’s a tiny shop, but I got mine there and I haven’t had to change it,” the sparrow man explained, sticking his hands into his pockets and gesturing at the small locale nearby. “What do you say? I can pay for it, and you just pay me back when you can!”

Silver laughed, all tinkling and bright, for she did know what computers were! She had learned when she’d gone to the library to fill out her application. The librarian had been very nice, reminding her each of the four times she’d gone to fill one out how to do it. She had sat with her until she got the hang of it and then drifted around in case Silver had other questions (she always did.)

But, she wasn’t going to correct Terence at the moment. Instead, she nodded eagerly, excited at the concept of getting her own phone.

“Oh, really, would you? I promise I will pay you back! As soon as I get a job. With my very first--paycheck.” She nodded her head and skipped after Terence towards the little shop he had pointed out. There was a great many things inside of it. Not just phones. At least--cell phones.

There was some odd object with numbers on it and a curling cord. She stuck her finger in one of the number holes and spun it, laughing delightedly at the little sound that chimed from it. 

“Is this a cell phone? I quite like it.” It was bright cherry red.

“Well if you see someone who keeps pushing work onto you that is supposed to be theres. More then what seems like they need a little help sometimes they are taking advantage of your willingness.” Moana offered with a small shrug. If she really was as innocent as she seemed Moana wouldn’t be surprised at all.

:Just if something doesn’t feel right ask someone about it. Feel free to come to me if you want or I’m sure some of your other friend’s might have some insight too?”

The concepts that Moana was talking about didn’t make any sense to Silver, to be perfectly honest. In the Hollow, everyone knew their jobs and more often than not, they enjoyed doing them! And, they enjoyed helping others if they finished their jobs ahead of time. Silver had always finished her jobs early. She liked to be a little competitive when it came to such things. 

“Oh, well! I don’t mind helping people if they need it! I enjoy it actually, as long as my own duties are done first.” She nodded her head seriously.

“Well if you can’t be a fast learner as long as you’re someone who will work hard that’s definitely something that makes up for it. Or anything like that.” She quickly added not wanting the girl to take it as an insult though part of her wondered that even if Sliver was insulted infront of her face if she would realize it. 

“Don’t let someone take advantage of you for something like that. I mean I won’t and I doubt anyone here would. But you don’t want to get yourself introuble from it.” She had seen it happen before in all in business situations and at least if she was here it wouldn’t happen anywhere else.

Silver tilted her head curiously.

Why would someone take advantage of her being a hard worker? Wasn’t being a hard worker a good thing? Everyone in the Hollow was a hard worker. If you slacked on your duties, it was very frowned upon. Imagine if a few of the water talent fairies slacked on their jobs! Maybe there wouldn’t be enough water for the Hollow! What if the linen fairies slacked at their jobs?! Then everyone would be running around naked!

“Okay! I won’t. I’ll make sure. Uhm--how would they take advantage of me? So I know what to look out for.”

Terence laughed. “Sort of,” he responded, tilting his head and looking at the fire engine. “They use that one to get rid of fires,” he explained. “Though a team of water-talent fairies might be more efficient, in my opinion. You should see if they’ll hire you, heh.”

Were magicks even allowed in fire stations? The sparrow man figured not, considering all the restrictions they still had in a magick town when it came to public service.

“Uhm, I forgot to ask, Sil,” Terence recalled, figuring he should ask before he forgot. “Have you thought about getting a phone? It’s sort of important to do so if you’re going to be living in town.”

Silver tilted her head. She didn’t find it inefficient. She thought it was brilliant! Humans were so clever! There weren’t many fires at the Hollow, but yes, the water fairies normally helped put it out. Maybe she should volunteer as a firefighter! If she could...

It was just so brilliant that Mundus, who didn’t have water magic, found a way to efficiently put out fires.

Terence distracted her from this thought, though. She turned her head and tilted it a little. “A phone? Oh! Those are those rectangles that people use to talk to each other with, yes? Hm. I hadn’t thought about it. Are they important? If you say so, then I trust you.” She nodded once.

“Show me the ways of being hoo-mon,” Silver said, purposefully making her voice sound like an alien as she wiggled her fingers in Terence’s direction, hoping it would make him laugh.

The sparrow man turned to face Silvermist and then smiled at the way her eyes looked. It felt like she was a small child thanks to all the wonder in there.

“Um - Well, they just do,” Terence responded, placing his hands on his waist. “When I arrived to town they already had it. It’s in a cool display case and everything. I don’t think they know what it does, if anything at all, so they just take good care of it.”

He chuckled. “I thought I’d knew what it’d do when I first heard of it but, to be honest, I have no idea.”

For Silvermist: “they just do” was a good enough answer for her. Maybe a fairy had donated it to them. That would make sense. Swynlake had been around almost as long as the Hollow had. 

“Well, that’s nice that they take care of it!”

And for Silvermist, that was enough. She just wanted to know her culture was being well-preserved and cherished. She liked it, even, that the Mundus of town seemed to care for the crown. Also, she knew that Fairy Godmother worked in Town Hall and she wouldn’t let anything happen to it.

“Oooh,” Silver said, looping her arm through Ter’s and dragging across the street to the open garage of the fire station, where the gigantic fire engines were located. Her eyes went wide.

“Wow! That’s a big car! That’s a car, right?”

Moana shrugged because that definitely wasn’t a deciding factor. She hadn’t either. Hell her redeeming factor for this was her upbringing and how much she loved nature and well being from Hana she couldn’t imagine anything else. 

“Not something to worry about. A lot of people need a chance to be taken on them for a first job or anything like that.” Moana mused glancing over the resume trying not to look too shocked as she just kind of blinked. She really didn’t have a lot of experience with fairies after all.

“Yeah look at that. You have experience with flowers. That’s a big thing.” She mused smiling at Sliver. “I mean a lot of our job is taking care of them and watering them and keeping the water clean and what not is very helpful.”

“Oh, I love taking care of flowers!” Silver spoke.

“And, well, I’m not--a very fast learner, but I’m really hard working and I’ll work and work and work until I get it right!” She swung her fist a little in the air.

It was true, though. Sometimes, it took Silver a couple tries before she got things right. Learning how to use her phone had been a bit of a struggle, but now she could make calls and text and even use emojis! All without Terence’s help. It’d really only taken a week or so. 

“I promise, I’ll do whatever you ask and I’ll love every second of it! Working here seems like so much fun. And, honestly, I miss all the plants from the forest.”

Moana let out a small chuckle as the girl reintroduced herself nodding her head. Hell she was able to handle Lottie’s excitement as her advisor she definitely could handle Slivers. Plus she always found it cute on people when they were just as excited about the world.

“I mean there’s only a couple of us and I think they are hiring for the summer so we could definitely take your resume. Even if you want you could put my name as a reference it could help if they ask.” Moana offered with a small smile.

“Have you ever worked at a flower shoppe before?”

Oh, good, it seemed like Moana remembered her. She wasn’t sure if she would or not, she assumed someone like Moana (who was nice and interesting and from America!!) met a lot of people and probably couldn’t remember them all. 

But, she remembered her and even said that she would let her put her name down as a reference?

Her eyes sparkled with excitement and she stepped closer, giddy with the possibilities of working in the store.

“Uhm, well, no!” she told Moana, honestly, her confidence faltering for just a moment, but she gathered it back quickly with a pop of her shoulders. 

“But, I have this garden fairy friend--Rosetta, and she’s taught me a lot about plants, and I like to help water them. That was one of my jobs as a water talent fairy. See?” She held out her resume to Moana, where under skills it said:

“Huh? Oh!” Terence exclaimed, getting back to reality as he saw Silvermist point at something she believed to be unusual. And, well, it was! “That’s Casa De Vil,” he began to explain. The building kind of clashed with the rest of the town, which was probably the reason Silvermist saw it so quickly. With all its weird rounded edges and round windows, the sparrow man felt like the building had been put there against the will of Swynlake itself. “They sell clothes for old people. Definitely not your kind of shop.”

The blond instead reached for Sil’s wrist to give her a small, gentle pull, so that she’d follow him. He crossed the street and, after walking for a little bit, he pointed at an old building. “That’s Town Hall. I don’t know if you saw it when you arrived, but you’re probably going to be coming here once in a while. They hold events and stuff, sometimes! They also have this really cool fairy crown thing in there.”

Serving as a tour guide seemed to be a decent distraction for the fairy boy, so he decided to keep doing just that for a little bit longer.

Silver liked the building she had pointed out. The windows kind of reminded her the eyes of bugs--the beetles and flies. All round and bulging. She thought it was curious and stood out, and to her, those were never bad things. Which meant she was disappointed that it wasn’t something that she might like, and she was still thinking about going anyways...

Then, Terence tugged on her gently and her head swung around to what he was pointing out.

Her eyes went big. The building was beautiful and looked old. 

“Fairy crown?” she asked, turning towards Terence with those wide eyes on him. “How do they have that?” She tilted her head, looking back at the building.

“Oh wow, that’s nice! You seem to be adapting well, then,” Terence said, though it wasn’t necessarily true. After all, Silvermist was still getting too excited about things like ordering tea - That was just like the way Terence acted when he first came to town, and it made him chuckle.

“I mean, I’m doing well. Adjusting, I suppose?” he responded, gazing at his friend. She had been the one to see him suffer a few days earlier, so it wasn’t like he had to hide anything from her, even if it was sort of uncomfortable to even reference it.

As he said that, the sparrow man decided to start walking down Main Street, as if that’d magically fix anything.

Silver beamed at Terence’s praise. Fawn had said the same thing to her this morning when Silver had told her not to help her. (Fawn had still had to help a little bit, with the correct amount of money Silver had to hand over. She still wasn’t exactly sure how money worked, but she was figuring it out.) 

It made her feel good that she could do this thing. This thing that--people didn’t really think she could. 

But, she didn’t think to hard on it, she was more concerned about Terence.

He had been really upset. She’d never seen him like that and it was strange and worrying for the young fairy. She trotted along next to him, keeping up rather easily, but she watched him carefully, wondering if she should say anything more. Terence looked okay...if not a little sad. And he wasn’t trying to hide it, which was good.

“That’s good,” she told him with a nod, reaching out to squeeze his arm lightly as they walked along the road. “Oooh, what is that?” she asked excitedly, tugging on him and pointing out whatever had caught her eye.

“I mean, why not?” Terence responded with a shrug. It’d be weird to have someone buy his own work for him, but it was really nice of Silvermist to offer it, so he would definitely not pass up on it.

“Then let’s get going. Your day’s been fine, I hope?” the sparrow man inquired, as he began to walk down the sidewalk. He looked around. The town was fine, unlike the days past other disasters. And yet, it all still felt like it was yesterday. Creepy. Maybe he was just too worried for the time being, but he didn’t let that take over and instead took to smiling at the fairy instead.

“Oh, it’s been very good! I walked around the park and said hello to Fawn! She was at Hatter’s. And I even ordered myself a tea!” She held it up and wiggled it in its to-go cup for Terence. “See?” 

She was very proud of herself.

“How are you?” she asked, tilting her head. Of course, that was just what you asked people, but she was genuinely concerned about her friend. He’d seemed quiet--like he didn’t shine as brightly since they’d gotten back from that otherworld. She didn’t want to push him to talk, but she wanted him to know that she was here, if he wanted.
