Not sure where to start...
Before I begin, let me say this. This post is coming from the heart, and so I apologise if it doesn’t make sense or if I repeat myself. Ridiculously, I am pretty emotional right now.
Tonight in London’s Covent Garden was the Olivier Awards, a highly-renowned awards ceremony celebrating and showcasing the theatre of the West End. As I have posted about repeatedly, Jamie Parker was up for an Award for Best Actor in a Musical, for his role as Sky Masterson in ‘Guys and Dolls’. In this role he was nothing short of perfect, giving it his all and with the role displaying to anyone who saw it just how crazily talented he is. And his talent was being recognised, with well-known theatre critics such as Mark Shenton saying that he thought Jamie should and would win.
I’m not going to beat about the bush here. Jamie didn’t win.
Don’t get me wrong – I am thrilled for the actor who did win: Matt Henry, for his role in ‘Kinky Boots’. From everything I’ve heard, he was fantastic in the role and thoroughly deserved it. After all, everyone who wins an Olivier wins it for a reason!!
But this hurts. Really hurts. Maybe it’s because I am (rightly or wrongly) somewhat emotionally invested in Jamie, but I so wanted him to win. For everything he has done in ‘Guys and Dolls’, but also as recognition for everything he has done in the past. For over 10 years he has been working hard in the world of the Arts, building up his reputation both as a performer and as someone with clear visions: someone who got to the last round of interviews for the job of Artistic Director at Shakespeare’s Globe, for goodness’ sake! I believe that this Award would have not only been recognition for what he did as Sky, but that it would have been a thank you for everything he has done in the past.
So I’m gutted for him. This amazing, amazing man ought to have won tonight. He is so talented in everything he does that an Olivier Award is well overdue. But this was his first nomination, let’s not forget that. He’ll bounce back bigger and better than before, and this will only be the start of his Oliviers’ journey, of that I am convinced.
So yes, let’s be upset that he didn’t win. But let’s be grateful for everything he has done already, and look forward to everything that he will do in the future. He will win one day. No doubt about it. And when he does, we will all be there cheering and whooping him on.
Not much more I can add to what I’ve already said.
Really beautifully stated. I haven’t seen Guys and Dolls because I’m in the US, so my hope for his win was based solely on my admiration of him otherwise. But I know how much my friends who have seen it enjoyed his performance - and also how much he himself seemed to enjoy the role. I’m sure he will have another opportunity of winning in the future, but still… I wish it could have been this year.
Thank you - means a lot.
Jamie Parker and his wife Deborah Crowe arriving at the Olivier Awards! Best of luck and masses of pride towards this man!
I would just like to draw your attention to this. Mark Shenton, theatre critic for The Stage, said this. YES!! Come on Jamie!
Today’s the day! Sending all the luck in the world to this wonderful man for the Olivier Awards tonight - here’s hoping!
He deserves this award of Best Actor in a Musical so freaking much: I think I’ll be crying tonight either way!
THESE ARE THINGS THAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY! I went to the last show of Guys and Dolls at The Savoy Theatre last night, and holy moly crap it was incredible!! I had such an amazing time, and I saw Jamie 3 times: before the matinee, after the matinee and after the final show :’) He is such a lovely man and so charming and happy do spend time talking to you, awh man my heart <3 At the end of the reprise of Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat he started crying, onstage, whilst still belting out the song and acting his heat out. I couldn’t cope and started crying myself… which was just a continuation of the tears I’d been crying through pretty much all of his songs!
He is so humble and sweet: we all cheered him when he came out of the stage door after the final show, and he was so taken aback with the response he didn’t know where to put himself. He is so wonderful and talented: I can’t wait to see him in Cursed Child! May he continue to be as amazing and as appreciated as he is, lovely man.
More photos! Ahhh!!
Stage Door advice needed!!
Hello!!
So, on 12th March, I’m going to go and see the last night of Guys and Dolls at the Savoy Theatre in London… and fully intend on stag door-ing afterwards. However, as someone who rarely stage-doors (read, wants to do it more often), I am not sure what to say when the lovely actors (*Jamie*) and actresses come out. I tend to be a bit of a socially awkward penguin when it comes to meeting people I admire and am inspired by, so… Does anyone have any advice they can offer me? Both in terms of what to say, how to ask for an autograph/photo? And where at the Savoy Theatre is the best place to be in terms of likelihood of seeing performers, as I’ve seen pics both by stage door and in front of the big Savoy sign? Also, I have cards for the 4 leads: what’s the best way of getting these to them?
This amazing and wonderful man has been nominated for the Best Actor in a Musical Olivier Award for his role as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls. Beyond proud. Fingers crossed everyone!
And the tweet was his response to the news :’)
Also… I bought my ticket yesterday to go and see the last performance of Guys and Dolls at the Savoy Theatre on 12th March! One last chance to see the lovely Jamie as Sky Masterson. I can’t wait!!

Happy Valentine’s Day, all.
THESE WERE THINGS THAT HAPPENED. YES!
So I get a text from a friend saying that she’s pretty sure she served Jamie in our local Superdrug today… Fingers crossed!
I HAVE IT I HAVE IT I HAVE IT!!! Just bought my ticket for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in September! Eeeeeeeeeeee Jamie as Harry! <3
#TBT It’s a year on Tuesday (22nd) since this dream came true. What a man. What a lovely and amazing man he is. Wish all the best for him. x
I can’t believe it was a year ago. Wow. So much love for him getting so much stronger.
PLEASE LOOK AT HIS FACE. LOOK AT IT.
I physically cannot deal with backstage interval selfies from this man. Help me, I love him.
So the lovely Jamie Parker opened in Guys and Dolls in The Savoy Theatre London last night. I’m gutted I couldn’t be there, but it’s safe to say I will be going many times before it closes! And because I am a geek, I drew the 4 main characters - Sky Masterson, Sarah Brown, Miss Adelaide and Nathan Detroit - as penguins as part of my #TheatrePenguin series (see bottom pic).
From what I’ve heard, they had an amazing first night!
