I will say that the crossbody Driver works a LOT better with the My-th suit than any of the Zeztz suits because the former doesn't have that muscle padding that Zeztz does. Not to say that the Zezts suits are bad, but it's bugged me since the beginning, especially when Catastrom debuted. The suits for the cat Riders, Mao and Rid, is also visually pleasing because of the more jagged silhouette contrasting the roundedness of My-th suit.
I'm absolutely calling the two cat Riders BloodCat and ShadowCat.

Not sure what to think of Takahashiâs writing when all four of his primary Ridersâ final forms basically have the same power of âNOâ.
Ex-Aid Hyper Muteki Gamer- Invincibility

Zeztz Exdream- Overwriting outcomes
Conceptually, each final form fits the theme of the season pretty well, but itâs gotten repetitive. When Takahashi is hired to write another Rider season (letâs not kid ourselves, itâs gonna fucking happen), Iâll eat my hat if he manages to make a final form that has an original power.

Takashi I like you and I like your writing in general but I can't defend u on this case with this season in mind. You gave me hope when you showed off a main cast that has three female leads and I thought at least Nasuka would've become a Rider or be relevant since her actress was a Rider in your previous Rider series but...This season is definitely the worst when it comes to female characters. Nem is a damsel most of the time, Nasuka's physical ability is just used as a gag, Minami is just emotional support, and then there's Kureha....You let her transform but u make it clear that she's not technically a Rider then shot her dead, you undo that death with the premonition just to put her in a hospital bed for weeks two episodes later and the episode she returns she gets killed so bad that there's not even anything left to fucking bury!
I swear to Gaim the next Rider season better have some female characters who don't get fucked over by their writers as much. (Anyone know if they announced the head writer for My-th yet?)
Shit I don't even like Gotchard that much but I can confidently say that they treated their female characters way better than Gavv & especially Zeztz ever did!
On one hand, I really, really want Gavan Infinity and Project R.E.D. to succeed. There's been so much advancement in the production side of things that I've enjoyed every episode of Infinity since the beginning. The CG looks good, the fighting choreography is amazing, and all the actors play their rolls very well.
On the other hand, though, a lot of Atsuhiro Tomioka's writing quirks are showing and it makes me want to rip my hair out. Tokutubers have complained about Setsuna's episodes recycling his gimmick of "not understanding emotions" and like... where were you during Boonboomger? Tomioka characters are written to have a specific personality quirk and don't really develop. The story is usually about things happening around them, not to them. You can find a lot of examples watching through the anime series Tomioka has written for, like the Pokémon anime and Inazuma Eleven games.
It's easier to watch Gavan Infinity over Boonboomger because the characters' personalities don't overlap. I'd rather have angry and passionate Gavan, stoic robot Gavan, smiley science Gavan, and wall fetish ninja Gavan over catchphrase, no personality, happy dumbass 1, happy dumbass 2, Genba, and happy dumbass 3.

Itâs really difficult for me to feel invested in Zeztz. Ever since the reveal that half the show was Bakuâs precognitive dream that could PREDICT THE FUTURE, the show has felt rushed.
Character dynamics were reset and twists were added that didnât elaborate on existing plot points, and instead feel like they were added for Takahashi to utilize his usual shock value writing style.
Basically it feels like Takahashi wrote himself into a corner, retconned the âbad endingâ by resetting the plot but with Baku now operating on New Game + mode, and doubled down on his usual âforgo the characters and narrative in favor of graphical marvels and aura farmingâ shtick. Whether the reset was intentional or not doesnât help that it was apparently necessary.
Since there's been a lot of talk in the tokusatsu community as of late post sentai ending or going on hiatus or whatever is gonna happen to that show, I've been seeing a lot of people on online spaces getting really toxic over it saying shit like "sentai must keep going" or "gavan must fail so we can bring sentai back" and now I'm just thinking about how mindsets like this over the stuff we love are what danganronpa v3 tried to warn us about đ
SPOILERS FOR DANGANRONPA V3:
Near the end of v3, its revealed that danganronpa is a tv show on its 53rd season where people kill each other for fun - with tsumugi, one of the survivors atp, being the mastermind and is the head writer of the show, as well as the one who kickstarted the killings
Tsumugis role in v3 is a stand in for toxic fans that don't want the thing they love to end, in her case it's not letting danganronpa end despite danganronpa causing the deaths of hundereds and in the sentais fandoms case, is not wanting sentai to end despite the show no longer being profitable and unable to branch out overseas because of hasbro, all the media we consume has a shelf life, wether it be burnout from creatives, the show not doing well commercially or the death of an actor, the thing we love could end in our lifetime, could be in our great great grandsons
The main message in danganronpa v3 is that we need to let go of the things we love at times and how the things that we become attached to can impact us in meaningful ways, and I get why letting go of the things we love could be hard - as someone on the autism spectrum, having something like tokusatsu or anime or a new entry in my favourite game franchises helps keep me grounded and relaxed, having something we can have hope for when things are tough, like a new episode of sentai nearly every week gives us something to look forward towards - escapism is fine especially in the current state of everything, but how much is too far? I have learnt lots from these shows and games and have inspired me to pursue my dreams of creating my own stuff, but if our attachment to the media we consume becomes unhealthy to the point where we reject what comes afterwards it becomes a problem
I don't need a constant stream of new sentai content to keep me satisfied, if they want to end sentai and replace it with project red then that's perfectly fine, I'm optimistic for gavan infinity even though I do have some issues with it, if I still want sentai content I've got 50 years worth to consume over many years to come, and if sentai does come back a couple years from now from a supposed hiatus then I'll just treat it as a bonus, and even if I'm still hungry for more sentai after that, then there's fan works, fanfiction, oc teams and mecha, podcasts and audio dramas, cosplays and so much more
In short I'm willing to give project red and gavan infinity a shot, it's not sentai sure but it's not supposed to be, I don't need sentai to be running yearly to enjoy it, it's good to take a break every now and then, and if I still want to consume sentai content then I have fan works for that, better yet create my own franchise with sentai as a basis
About Gozyuger and Gavan InfinityâŠ
I wonât talk about points that have already been made about the production or whatnot because thatâs been done to death already. But the show really had this odd contradiction in what kind of show it wanted to be.
On one end, Gozyuger wanted to be an anniversary season of Super Sentai (The Sentai Ring gimmick was very front and center) and celebrate/feature past Reds through the use of the Universe Warriors.
On the other hand, the show also wanted to reinvent the Sentai formula much like how Donbrothers and King-Ohger attempted to. The premise of the show is supposed to be a battle royale, with each Gozyuger able to match the power of an entire Sentai team/Kamen Rider on their own, as was discussed in a production interview. Allowing each ranger to pilot Tega Sword by themselves also adds to the changing of the normal format, seeing as solo piloted robots in past shows were usually a late-season addition.
The main problem is that Gozyuger clings to both ideas but doesnât fully commit. The team kinda clumps together for a lot of fights even when the contestants of each No. 1 battle are pretty clear. Even when the rangers are doing their own thing before a fight, they kinda just⊠all show up. Itâs not as effective as how Donbros and King-Oh was selective with who showed up for a fight. In majority of the Gozyu fights, Hoeru is always present, the focus Gozyuger/Universe Warrior of the week is present, the others show up after the initial square up, Kumade also shows up just because, so on and so forth.
That doesnât really reinforce the idea that an individual Gozyuger can take on a kaijin or a Universe Warrior by themselves.
In the introductory episodes, there was more of this individuality to each of the rangers that slowly became less prominent as the show went on. Iâd say around when Universe Tyrannoranger appeared. And as much as I enjoy a good Koichi Sakamoto fight scene, these kinds of fights only diminished the notion that the Gozyugers were individuals. Which makes the impact of Fire Candle proclaiming that theyâve become a real Sentai in the final episode seem weak.
Another element that was sorely missing was more of the Universe Warriors. I get that they probably couldnât have a Universe Warrior for every single episode, but when Kinjiro and Sumino show up with new rings they acquired offscreen, that kinda made the importance of the Sentai Rings weaker.
Which makes me worried about how Gavan Infinity will be handled. The main writer is listed as Atsuhiro Tomioka, who was the main writer for Boonboomger, the PokĂ©mon series, the Inazuma Eleven series, the Danball Senki trilogy, and many other anime. Iâve expressed my dislike of the writing in Boonboomger in the past, but I realized, looking at Tomiokaâs writing credits, that itâs because heâs primarily a âscenario writerâ. He writes things that happen around the characters, not things that happen to the characters.
Now, this is my personal experience with his works, but for Inazuma Eleven and Danball Senki, the base stories of the games were also pretty barebones, but the corresponding anime was paced better because they could use the games as an outline. The same goes for the recent Red Ranger Isekai, which Tomioka is also credited as writer in, using the manga as a base to create more with the anime.
Boonboomger felt much like the outline of a game with the characters each having a backstory, a personality trait and a unique character design, but not much more, with not much done to develop their front story. Gozyuger at the very least made attempts to connect each rangerâs backstories with their front-facing character arcs, with mixed results due to an imbalance of character focus. Donbros was better in this regard because the charactersâ backstories were not important to the overall plot, as more focus was on the characters themselves, and King-Oh was well balanced with front and back story, backed by consistent character arcs and story beats that paid off in the end.
With Tomioka at the helm of Gavan Infinity, Iâm going in very cautiously.
