I really dislike how much people hate on Lila in Hey Arnold. I understand that she is supposed to be Helgas “competition” and all, but I don’t think people understand that when it came to Lila, Arnold was most definitely in the wrong a lot of the time, and that comes from someone whose favorite character IS Arnold. I’m not going to lie, when Lila first pursued Arnold after thinking he liked her, she should have heard him out before making him hang out with her, THAT was her fault. But after she made it clear she did not like him, Arnold SHOULD have stopped there. But he kept crossing her boundaries, so much to the point she had to keep telling him multiple times that she does not like him. So much so that even GERALD had to talk to him multiple times because Arnold was being so toxic about Lila. And I think what really showed his toxic obsession was when he left Helga outside at the costume party JUST BECAUSE she stopped dressing like Lila. Poor girl finally tried being herself to him and he completely disregarded her just because she wanted to look like herself. He even hated the idea that Lila liked Arnie because Arnold thought that he was simply better than him. He acted entitled by saying he deserves to be with Lila instead of Helga “because he’s a nice guy”. Lila and Arnold are clearly not meant to be together and the fact that Arnold acted this way is proof, so why is Lila getting all the hate? Lila made it clear she did not like him multiple times, she set boundaries, she gave Helga the part in Romeo and Juliet BECAUSE Helga loved Arnold, Lila rooted for Helga and Arnold because she thought it was cute. And most importantly, she kept Helgas secret from everyone and kept her distance from Arnold. Lila’s just simply a sweet girl and she helped Helga out multiple times. Yeah, her being perfect and having Arnold chase her is a little annoying, but she doesn’t deserve the rep she gets.
Oof, I got so much to say about this.
I've always been shocked that people hated Lila, when it was Arnold who constantly pushed for something more. Lila gently put boundaries down every time and was honestly blunt about them. Of course she'd find non-pushy Arnie far more attractive!
That being said, I love seeing this side of Arnold--although he can become insufferable sometimes. It shows that as much as a good kid he is, he still has flaws and isn't right all the time. His obsessive tendencies show the most when it comes to: Eugene, Helga, and Lila--with him being most aggressive when it comes to Eugene (i.e. Eugene's Birthday)
And honestly? I think Arnold is better for it. He's a kid and has a lot to learn.
I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt for him leaving Helga out in the cold in the episode you mentioned, Helga's Masquerade. I think if anything, may have jumbled his feelings he has for both girls. I'm not 100% convinced with Arnold when he tries to defend himself against Gerald too. I'm my opinion, I think he first hung out with Helga because of her Lila-ness, but ended up genuinely having a good time with her.
When he messes up and calls her Lila and gets even more defensive, heh, I think when Helga leaves, he struggles with deciphering what in heck is going on with him too.
We all know Lila in School Play is sooo eager to finally break Helga, fishing for her admittance of her crush for Arnold. Just look at her face! She's enjoying it. And I do think she's a huge supporter of them in the background.
Sorry for the tangent, all in all, Lila has done nothing wrong and doesn't deserve all the hate she gets.
These days however, I think it's far less, which of course is very nice. I don't think I've met a person in the fandom who isn't a casual (looking at you, Reddit) that depicts Lila as a demon, so, I don't think her being hated on is as common as it once was.
i like his face. fun to draw :)
Summer ☀️🏖️
Some little sketches of young adult Hey Arnold characters :) I need to clean up some of these because some characters I drew a while ago and I did them really messy and I want to fix them up better. I actually did that for Arnold, his original sketch was a mess. But anyway- when I finish drawing all classmates and maybe a few extra, I plan on coloring them and giving them little headcanons of my own ✌️

A reference for present and future fanfiction writers who want to capture Helga’s voice authentically. She punches her words with heavy emphasis and peppers her dialogue with slang from every era, often in the same sentence.
And yes, I myself actually use this for my fan-fiction so I can make sure to always stay true to Helga. If I am missing anything, let me know.

Note: Helga often makes literary and cultural references which are a bit strange for someone her age, such as saying "Et tu, Phoebe?" in "Helga's Makeover",
", a reference to Julius Caeser supposedly saying "Et tu, Brutus?" during his assassination, as well as mentioning Fortuna, a Roman Goddess of Luck. She also tends to have her dreams in paintings (most famously "The Persistence of Memory" in "Olga Comes Home", although she doesn't recognize it). This reveals that Helga has an interest in history, literature and art, which makes sense considering her artistic side.
