theres something magical about simplicity. about removing the requirement for more, more, more. even in todays society, where more is almost always favored. where algorithms reward us for our neverending engagement, and sensationalism sells much more than just tabloids (like, seemingly everything else) and even despite it all, i am reminded over and over again how much i enjoy simplicity in my daily life.
i love spending time in bondi beach every time we come to australia because of the ease of each day. wake up, practice, swim, eat, teach, with little more or less involved in the equation. adventures always arise, friends come and go in rhythm with their own journeys, and still there is opportunity to appreciate simple rituals. finding joy in the process of making food, doing yoga, a morning conversation with a friend, calling your mom, a walk to work, for me thats what makes life sustainable and opens new up avenues for creativity. it is easy to always be seeking stimulation but holding out for your own inspirations to take hold can glean new perspectives into all of your situations. all of the more complex or creative moments in my practice come from consistently moving through the same things and watching for those special moments of change.
i had three of the best ideas i’ve had in awhile as we were waiting for the toast to rise in our dingy little airbnb just off the ocean. would those thoughts have come up if we were sipping classy beverages in a trendy cafe? maybe, but my mind could also have been caught up in the experience.
finding a balance of what daily rituals you can take with you anywhere with you combined with joy of fresh experiences can help make each day playful and purposeful.
