“Maskne” – How to avoid skin irritation from wearing a mask.
Have you ever heard of the new term during this pandemic, it is known as “maskne”. Yes, you guessed it, it is a term to describe the forming of acne, in the area where the mask is worn ( according to healthline.com).
As someone who has experienced this many times, especially after a long day out wearing a mask, I always ended up having a red rash around my cheeks area. And this can last for up to 3 days. So here are some of the ways to prevent it:
Choose the right detergent or soap
Yes, this can affect how it will go on your skin! You might be allergic to some soap or detergent. Our face is has more sensitive skin, thus choosing the right type of detergent or soap is a must. Sometimes, you can even wash it with body soap, it offers more light and gentle product. Choose soaps without any added scents or perfumes is also suggested. Also, wash your mask immediately after you got home.
Choose the right mask
Choosing the right type of fabric of the mask is also necessary. Some skin can’t handle if the mask is too thick. A thick mask does not always mean that the mask has more coverage. Knowing the type of skin is very important in this case. However, if you get confused, you can always go for the 100% cotton material, or materials that are soft and breathable.
Change mask
Do not wear the same mask for too long. If it is already for more than 4 hours, I suggest to change it to the new one. Our skin gets dirty and oily throughout the day.
Wear sunscreen and moisturizer
Wearing moisturizer and sunscreen can protect your skin that is more prone to friction from the mask. This might eliminate the red rash you get from wearing the mask for too long. You can always wear moisturizers and sunscreen daily for the sake of your skin too right. I know some of you might think “ why should I wear sunscreen when half of my face is covered with the mask?” well other than it can protect your skin, you don’t want to get uneven skin tone or sunburnt right? Aloe vera or any products that offer more natural ingredients are recommended.
Clean you face
Always clean and wash your face afterward. If you are wearing makeup, choose the right type of cleansing or micellar water for your skin. I learned to use micellar water first, then continuing to use cleansing oil afterward. Double-cleansing is the key. Afterward, you can wash your face with your face-soap. Don’t forget to wash and clean your face immediately after you got home, don’t wait for too long!
I hope these tips are useful to you! Try to pinpoint what may be the cause of your skin irritation! Do not wear a mask that is too tight or too loose. Either way, I hope you stay safe and healthy!
