As someone of you may know mom has been taking some time to focus on herself and her mental health this past month and that’s why we have not been as active as we wish to be. I have received outstanding amount of support and love from so many cats and their humans this past month from kind words of encouragement to sharing their own mental illness stories. We feel it’s the right time to finally share mine. Mental illness is something I’ve been struggling with for as long as I can remember. I am diagnosed with PTSD, Major Panic Disorder and Clinical Depression but, a diagnosis wasn’t always the case and I have spent most of my years having no clue why I felt the way I did. When I was young I witnessed the tragic death of someone very near and dear to my heart. I struggled with survivors’ guilt for most of my adolescence and it was very hard on my growing mentality. Mental illness runs in my family, even before that tragedy I was the shy kid who constantly hid behind her dad with plenty of emotions to go around. As a kid, I didn’t know how to express my extreme emotions in my head so crying was my go-to expresser. I hated leaving my friend’s houses so much I would cry, cry and cry some more from the thought of leaving until I got home. It was so much more than tears and sadness. Being with them was the perfect distraction from the mind I didn’t understand and I didn’t want to go back to the thoughts in my own head. Teachers were constantly setting up appointments with the school counsellors and myself "just to talk" putting me in "healthy relationship" groups but never telling me why. No one told me, no one told my parents (that I know of) the signs I showed of depression and anxiety. At that point in my life, I didn’t even know those things existed. I just knew that the way I felt every day. That heaviness in my chest, the uncertainty of life, the deep sadness was not how my peers felt every day. I knew that I was the one being talked to by school counsellors and put into groups not the majority of my peers.
