the reaction switch owners have had to game icons not fitting the established style guidelines is one of the pettiest things i’ve ever found myself completely agreeing with
nintendo has established guidelines for the switch icons, and for good reason. the guidelines specify a graphic representing the game and the game’s logo, with minimalistic icons being discouraged. it makes sense because the icons are very large on the switch’s menu, so they should be detailed. they should look like game covers, not mobile game icons.
it seems petty but when Snake Pass’s icon changed from this:
the issue IMMEDIATELY becomes apparent. it doesn’t fit in with the other games even a little bit. it looks awful.
i can imagine getting such a visceral reaction from users about icons sucking must be frustrating for developers, like “why are people complaining about the icon? why don’t they just play the game!”
but c’mon. look at that. it looks awful. when i see the current Snake Pass icon i get that itch in my brain that tells me that my adblock missed something. it looks like if i click on it my computer will get a virus.
i’m glad that sumo finally relented and said they were going to change it back to the original. i’m glad several companies are relenting and are changing their icons to fit the style guidelines. visual consistency is important. the guidelines are in place for a reason. make your shit look like you care about it.
