It’s been 18 years since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.
Here’s to the people who made peace possible. Here’s to the politicians who set aside their hatred to give peace a chance. Here’s to the arbitrators and mediators and activists who took two sides of a violent divide and drove them to compromise. Here’s to the people who lost their lives at the hands of tyrants whose crowns were balaclavas and whose rule came in the form of bullet and bomb. Here’s to the journalists that risked their lives to show the world what was happening in this country. Here’s to the victims of violence and sectarianism that did not follow the path of hatred. Here’s to the people who fled this land so that they and their families could have a chance at a future. Here’s to those who welcomed the people of Ulster in a time when they were treated with fear and unease. Here’s to those that signed the agreement. Here’s to those that voted yes. Here’s to the ceasefire babies. Here’s to the children of the Good Friday Agreement. Here’s to the generations ahead that will lead Northern Ireland into a future where violence and intimidation will no longer rule our streets. Here’s to the people who survived decades of murder and hatred. Here’s to the people who bear the scars, visible and invisible, from a conflict they didn’t ask for. Here’s to the older generations who will provide a stern reminder through their memories of where violence led us. Here’s to the parents raising their children to reject the paranoia and distrust of the past. Here’s to the men and women in green who police our streets and protect our citizens on a daily basis from the violence of masked men. Here’s to those that reject the naysayers, who will not let their hearts be ruled by “us versus them”. Here’s to the young people who will be untethered from sectarian division and stand as each other’s equals. Here’s to those who speak out against inequality and against bigotry. Here’s to those who embrace our varied cultures and history, not as a weapon but as a paintbrush. Here’s to the poets, the writers and the artists who immortalise our stories and preserve our history as a lesson to all. Here’s to the dreamers that seek to throw off the chains of history and embrace our country’s potential. Here’s to those who make this country great. Here’s to those that carry the torch of peace. Here’s to the fallen. Here’s to the future. Here’s to us. It’ll all be grand.

promoting body positivity for larger girls:
doing so by throwing skinny girls under the bus, calling thinner girls “fake”, or insisting that being bigger is “what men really want” (implying that any female body type is only good if it has male approval):
I’ve already heard it all from taking these pictures. That it looks unflattering. That my body doesn’t belong in something like this. Well who are you to decide what I should and should not wear. My body looks damn good in this and I’ve decided I will wear whatever the hell I want. I will show my tummy, my love handles, my thunder thighs. I don’t care what you think. My body my rules

That’s funny because all I could think is, “Wow, her body looks perfect in that suit.”

What a dear human being he is.
Paramilitary flags flying on the high street of my home town. I live in a mixed community which is in quite an affluent area. Overnight UDA flags have appeared all over the main street. The idiots who have put these up don't give a shit (one flag is attached to the lamppost right beside the town's CCTV pole, another directly outside the local police station). Apparently it's up to the council to have them removed...which means they'll likely stay there. I'm disgusted, this is a mixed community who have lived in relative harmony (even during the Troubles). I love this country but the idiots are taking over (and hanging flags from it to remind you who's in charge). I wish I wasn't going to be here this 12th July...I haven't the patience for this bullshit anymore. (Apologies for a long post that will probably interest nobody but tumblr is the only place I'm semi anonymous...I need to vent and if I posted this on facebook I'd run the risk of getting burnt out.)
Legalise cannabis and collect tax on it- no brainer to me
Pity the Unionist parties can't seem to move in the same direction as the rest of the Assembly. Sinn Fein have made huge steps. Martin McGuinness meeting the Queen is a big deal. I admire them for taking the decisions that sometimes don't sit well with their constituents, it shows how far we've come. I wouldn't be a fan of Sinn Fein but I do respect that they've had to come out of their comfort zone in order to attempt to put the past to bed. I just wonder how long it's going to take for the Unionist parties to do the same.
