Check out my most recent post, in which I listed all the clues that support Redarina that I noticed in last episode, 8.21 “Nachalo”.
One of the two leads of The Blacklist is departing. Megan Boone will exit the NBC series with the conclusion of season eight. The season finale is scheduled to air June 23, and the drama has been r…
“Boone made the show’s producers aware of her decision earlier in the season, so there will be a conclusion to Elizabeth’s story in the final two episodes that circles back to why Red took such an interest in the young agent at the show’s outset.”

Make sure you got thank the source behind all the exclusive information we got this season! They absolutely deserve it!
Unofficial cast list for Ep. 8.22 (not including series regulars) from Reddit
Looks like Red’s illness will be back in play with the two doctors (Dr. Clemons played Dom’s doctor who also treated Red). It’s surprising to see Beth Ryker from the Pilot who is now in high school. No Neville Townsend, but we still have Van Dyke.

There was an error adding the titles. We know that both 8.21 and 8.22 titles changed A LOT in the past few weeks. We don't know if 8.21 was "Neville Townsend" and 8.22 "Neville Townsend: Conclusion", or if 8.21 was something and 8.22 was "Neville Townsend", or anything else. We just know that they changed both of the titles.
NBC by uploading the promotional pictures, either
1) Used the old title 8.21 or 2) Used the old title of 8.22 in 8.21 by mistake
What you need to know is that at least one of those 2 episodes was going to be "Neville Townsend #2", but now 8.21 will be "Nachalo" and 8.22 "Konets". Since Townsend was going to be #2 on the list, I believe he should still retain that title, unless the writers decide not to include him in the Blacklist, which would be extremely odd. I personally think he will still be #2, but will only have his episodes aired in season 9.
More explained in the linked post!

I just wrote a new post in which I explained my theory about Reddington's 30 year project and how the building we saw in the last episode is connected. Make sure you check it out and give me your opinion about it by commenting! Feel free to share your own theory or add anything that you think I missed as well! Upvoting also helps!
Hey Aly! Ready for tonight's episode?
I would like to ask you something - I'm not sure if you know, but if you have a general idea that would already help. Back when 8.01 aired, was 8.22 already written, or do they write the episodes as they shoot them? If so, which episode do you think was airing (approximately obviously) by the time they were writing 8.22? Have they already started working on season 9 or is it just a general idea for now? I'm really clueless and I know these things are pretty hard to predict, but assuming they do it the same way they did for the previous seasons, what are your thoughts on this?
I will give you my general thoughts and invite @friendshiptothemax to chime in if she chooses to do so on anything she feels able to share or correct.
My understanding (bear in mind this is based on a normal year) is that the writers room generally opens for the upcoming season at some point in June. At that point, the Jo(h)ns and the other writers get together and map out the overall story arc of the entire season. I don't know the timing of how and when individual writers get assigned to particular episodes but I would assume that out of necessity, they start writing the eps that will air earlier in the season first and then continue. I also know from things Sam has said in the past that the staff writers get to pitch their ideas for Blacklisters to the Jo(h)ns and those get worked into the overall plan for the season as episodes are assigned. I don't know whether the whole season gets planned in advance in terms of who is doing what or whether decisions are adjusted throughout the season.
Bear in mind for this year that 8x01 to 8x03 were already basically written to be the final eps of season 7 before production shut down so they knew how how the season would start right off the bat. I do not think 8x22 was fully written when 8x01 aired back in November, but I do think it is likely that the core of the story was planned out and they knew what the ending of the season would be even if the final words hadn't hit the page yet.
I have no idea what sort of timetable they are on for finishing eps but from watching the process, there is of course a substantial amount of pre-planning that goes into an episode from the multiple drafts, to finding a director, choosing locations, planning sets, casting, costuming, etc. so I assume the bulk of an episode has to be in pretty close to final form many weeks ahead of when it is filmed even if minor adjustments still occur as they get closer to filming. In a normal year when the season finale ends in mid-May, I think the writers have hiatus before the show finishes production (late March to early April strikes a bell). I don't know what the schedule was this year with the extended production schedule or what their schedule will be for S9 but I would assume it will resemble past years.
I would also assume the Jo(h)ns have a general plan in mind for Season 9 that they will be kicking into gear over these next several weeks in anticipation of production starting later this summer. Jon B has said many times that they know where the story is going and are writing towards that end. The details of specific episodes and Blacklisters will be worked out once they officially open the S9 room (which may have happened already, I just don't know).
Hi @theblacklistunsolved and @alyblacklist!
Everything Aly said is basically correct! The writers work from roughly June to March -- next week is actually my last week of hiatus before I go back for season 9 (!). So to not correct anything, but simply add on:
So the first month or so is talking about the overall scope of the season. By the time we really get started on individual episodes, we know what we want to hit at the beginning, midseason (where there is often a “midseason finale” but sometimes not -- not a writer’s room decision) and end. Which is not to say that the final script is written, but we know roughly what is going to happen in it. I would say it would be EXTREMELY uncommon for a 22-episode show to have all of its episodes done before you start filming -- that’s more of a limited series, 6-episode kind of thing (which is a fairly recent type of television).
Then we get into pitching -- we go in chunks of like 5 or 6ish? So the J’s will decide what the first episode or three is, and then we’ll all pitch individual Blacklisters. Getting your Blacklister picked for an episode is a lucky combination of 1) They think the Blacklister is cool + 2) They have an idea for how that Blacklister fits into the overall story. We’ll spend one or two days just everyone pitching their ideas, then the J’s will go away for a bit, decide the 5ish ideas they liked and in what order they want them to go, and come back and tell us what the next run of episodes is and who is writing them. If your idea was picked, you go into high gear working with the J’s on the outline and script, and everyone else helps out those people and also starts working on new ideas for the next pitch day after those episodes are written. Repeat repeat repeat until the end of the season! This is part of what I really love about television -- the way lots of people contribute to the story and together you come up with something none of you could have come up with on your own. The J’s have their idea for the big scope of the season, which inspires the writers on ideas for Blacklisters, which inspires the J’s for individual steps in the story...I just think it’s so cool. The Park storyline this season actually came out of something I pitched, though if you were to read my original pitch it would be totally unrecognizable (one day after the show is over, ask me about it at a convention or something). But I had an idea for a story, that then several other people added onto and tweaked in different ways, and then it became the thing you saw on television. Something exists because of an idea I had -- that’s the kind of thing that still makes me pinch myself that I have this awesome job. :)
The script is usually “finalized” one production cycle ahead of it being made -- this is called “pre-production” or “prep.” (Finalized in quotes, because there are lots of practical changes that happen at this stage -- maybe we had envisioned a character as a man but a really great woman auditioned so we want to tweak the character, or we wrote a scene in an ice cream shop but we couldn’t find a good one to film at but we did get a cool roller rink*, or whatever) This is when the director gets onboard and we start casting, looking for locations, working out the schedule, building props, choosing costumes, etc, etc, etc. At any given time, we have one episode in prep and one episode in production (filming). We actually have two teams for many of our departments, “evens” and “odds” so that the even team can be prepping their next episode while the odd team is filming and vice versa. I would say the prep/production cycle is pretty much the rule as to how TV is made, though it’s not always evens and odds -- when I was an assistant on Maron, we shot two episodes at a time, so while we were filming episodes 1 and 2, we were prepping episodes 3 and 4 and so on. Maron did actually write all of the episodes each season before they started shooting, but that was for the very practical reason that the showrunner was also the lead actor (but you could get away with that because it was only 13 half-hour episodes, so we shot the whole season in under three months, as opposed to the Blacklist which shoots nearly all year long).
Uh does that answer everyone’s questions? Haha. I might have given everyone waaay more than anyone actually wanted.
Also yeah! Sorry I missed the livetweet today. I have a very small window between “fully vaccinated and can see people” and “end of summer vacation” so I’ve been trying to make the most of it! Ironically, I might miss the last two episodes for the opposite reason -- they air at 5pm (PST) on a workday and we usually don’t break until 6pm. I could reliably count on us breaking early on Fridays, but I’m not sure if we will on Wednesdays, especially with 821 airing in the middle of our first week back! So I’m going to have to play it by ear!
