I doubt the "dark forest" theory is true, it's likely only cooperative lifeforms would evolve the intelligence necessary to communicate across space, and in almost all similar real world situations, people do cooperate. Also probable that, at this time, humans are the only species this advanced in the galaxy. Communication is a must, though!
