En 2024 terminé este corto de animación, que fue mi proyecto como estudiante de animación y cine en Høgskulen I Volda. Hoy, más de un año desde que lo terminé, lo publico aquí para que todos lo puedan ver.
“Stargazer” fue un proyecto muy personal e introspectivo. En aquel entonces estaba leyendo “Los condenados de la Tierra” de Frantz Fanon y la autobiografía de Assata Shakur, a quien cito en el film y quien lamentablemente falleció hace unos meses, en 2025.
Fue un intento de plasmar en película mis sentimientos hacia el imperialismo occidental y desafiar el mito del Occidente civilizado que trae libertad y democracia al tercer mundo, el tipo de pensamiento de “la carga del hombre blanco” que muchos parecen tener.
Cuando comenzaba a tomar forma el storyboard del corto, la Resistencia Palestina lanzó sus ataques del 7 de octubre, y los israelís aprovecharon el pretexto para conducir un genocidio a gran escala contra el pueblo Palestino.
Es importante entender este evento como colonial. Israel hoy comete crímenes colonialistas cuyo estilo pasó de moda hace dos siglos, pues los países occidentales de hoy tienen formas más “sofisticadas” de conquistar, saquear y asesinar.
El colonialismo israelí tiene mucho más en común con el oeste Americano de hace 180 años que con el neocolonialismo del siglo 21.
Aunque yo me inspiré sobre todo en artistas latinoamericanos haciendo este corto, los eventos en Palestina también informaron el proyecto y me convencieron de la urgencia de la lucha antiimperialista.
Ahora, 2 años después y con más de 60.000 Gazatíes muertos, no quedan personas de conciencia que puedan creer el mito del occidente civilizado.
Aunque la causa Palestina me conmueve, la verdad es que el mayor motor para este proyecto fue el historial imperialista en América Latina con el que me familiaricé, como muchos otros, gracias a la literatura de Eduardo Galeano.
Hace pocos días los Estados Unidos bombardearon el país y la ciudad que me vio nacer, y es por eso es que me sentí obligado a escribir esto y compartir mi corto.
Me trae mucho enojo y tristeza ver cuántas personas apoyan este acto de agresión imperialista contra la patria.
Donald Trump dijo que la doctrina Monroe está viva, y que América Latina es el patio trasero de los Estados Unidos. Muchos parecen estar contentos con dicha doctrina, así que discúlpenme si mi visión para Latinoamérica y para Venezuela va más allá de ser El patio trasero de los yankees.
Pero la verdad no me sorprende. No me sorprende ver a tantos tan dispuestos y ansiosos por ser colonia gringa.
Desde que soy niño he tenido que tolerar las obscenidades que salen de la boca de muchas personas que se refieren a otros como “negros chavistas” en una expresión racista y odiosa, que celebran los crímenes de los guarimberos y que parecen tenerle más desprecio a Chavez por “Indio” que por su política.
Queda ver la magnitud del daño, lo cierto es que las intervenciones gringas en América Latina no terminan bien para los propios Latinos, lo que se viene no será bonito y mucho menos será libertad. Ojalá muchos de ustedes se hubieran familiarizado con la historia del plan cóndor y las intervenciones gringas en Latino América, porque si lo hubieran hecho, no estarían celebrando.
He aprendido mucho desde que terminé “Stargazer” pero sin duda hice algo evocativo con este pequeño proyecto estudiantil, y viendo cómo está el mundo, las palabras de Shakur que cito en el corto son hoy más conmovedoras que nunca:
“Yo creo que un barco perdido, manejado por marineros cansados y mareados, aún puede ser guiado de regreso a casa, al puerto”
In 2024, I finished this animated short film. It was my student project as an animation and film student at Høgskulen I Volda. Today, more than a year after I finished it, I'm publishing it here so everyone can see it.
“Stargazer” was a very personal and introspective project. At the time, I was reading “The Wretched of the Earth” by Frantz Fanon and the autobiography of Assaata Shakur, whom I quote in the film and who sadly passed away a few months ago in 2025.
It was an attempt to put into film my feelings towards western imperialism and to challenge the myth of the civilized West that brings freedom and democracy to the third world, the “white man's burden” type thinking that many seem to have.
As the storyboard for the short film began to take shape, the Palestinian Resistance launched its attacks on October 7th, and the Israelis used this as a pretext to carry out large-scale genocide against the Palestinian people.
It's important to understand this event as colonial. Israel today commits colonialist crimes whose style went out of fashion two centuries ago. Western countries today have more “sophisticated” ways of conquering, plundering, and murdering.
Israeli colonialism has far more in common with the American West of 180 years ago than with 21st-century neocolonialism.
Although I drew primarily inspiration from Latin American artists while making this short film, the events in Palestine also informed the project and convinced me of the urgency of the anti-imperialist struggle.
Now, two years later and with more than 60,000 Gazans dead, there are no conscientious people left who can believe the myth of the civilized West.
While the Palestinian cause moves me, the truth is that the main driving force behind this project was the imperialist history in Latin America, which I became familiar with, like many others, thanks to the literature of Eduardo Galeano.
Just a few days ago, the United States bombed the country and the city where I was born, which is why I felt compelled to write this and share my short film.
It fills me with anger and sadness to see how many people support this act of imperialist aggression against our homeland.
Donald Trump said that the Monroe Doctrine is alive and well, that Latin America is the backyard of the United States, and many of you seem content with these arrangements. Forgive me if my vision for Latin America and for Venezuela goes beyond being the backyard of the Yankees.
But frankly, it doesn't surprise me. It doesn't surprise me to see so many so willing and eager to be a gringo colony.
Since I was a child, I've had to endure the obscenities that come out of the mouths of many people in my life who refer to others as "Negros Chavistas" in a racist and hateful expression, who celebrate the crimes of the guarimberos, and who seemed to despise Chávez more for being an "Indian" than for his policies.
It remains to be seen the full extent of the damage, but the truth is that US interventions in Latin America never end well for Latinos themselves. What's coming won't be pretty, and freedom will be far from it. If only many of you had familiarized yourselves with the history of Operation Condor and US interventions in Latin America, you wouldn't be celebrating.
I've learned a lot since finishing "Stargazer," but I certainly created something evocative with this small student project. Seeing the state of the world, Shakur's words are more poignant than ever.
