This show was everything. Jasmine Gibson is an awesome new SQ friend and her poetry is incredible—check out the PDF of Drapetomania. After the poetry reading, some of our discussion was around how in mainstream dialogue mental illness is used to benefit the innocence of white people who do terrible shit, and in turn it’s used against marginalized people (specifically black people) to justify violence and brutality against them. We talked about how negative perceptions of millenials (and their social media use) are also rooted in racism, where those in power are angry about the increasing volume/visibility of dissenting voices against white supremacy and police brutality. The show ended on a really important note where one of our brilliant guests said a beautiful thing about how we need to stop giving so much of ourselves to white men (who are so willing to demonize you) and start giving more to each other (and we will protect each other). There’s definitely way more to all this in the recording but this is a basic summation.
