As a whole this is a really good second episode. The world feels big and like there's a lot that can happen, while also feeling more...Secure, almost. The characters are a little closer and feel like they have genuine connection.
That'll be it for tonight. Thank you if you read any of my liveblog post, hope you enjoyed the ride! Hope you have a lovely night wherever you are.
I'm pretty glad this did end up being the message like I mentioned before. Hearing it directly from Eda is also really nice, since it's grounding in a way. It separates the distance between them since it creates the concept Eda relates as not being chosen while still accomplishing a lot magically. That someone in this world can somewhat casually be a witch and it's not a particularly big deal or accomplishment is nice for Luz. It makes me pretty hopeful for the rest of the story.
Again, I love the previously mentioned shows in another post of mine, but they're about fate. In a way it locks in our characters and our perception of them. With Luz? I have NO idea. Since this affirms her to not be "denying" fate or finding destiny, but to simply be creating the best version of herself like any other person. Since of that I'm really not sure where the story will go (in a good way), while also being reassured it will be a story Luz is going to be an active participant, if that makes sense? She's always going to be our main character but she's going to be creating her own story rather then the story controlling her. So many fantasy coming of age stories are moreso about folk finding themselves in situations made for them and going with the flow of events, rather then the character creating those events.
Likely a bit rambley and nonsensical explaining that. Regardless, makes me hyped about the team's storytelling skills.
Interesting that everywhere seems to be the bones of giants here between the town and lands. Huh.
So with this guy's design it's not particularly like King in any way aside from yellow eyes. I guess demon as a species here varies a lot.
Seems like despite being demons King isn't particularly recognized as one either? Which seems a little odd. Maybe King is just an outlier compared to the rest of them and a bit of a bad standard to try and figure out demons from so far.
I know I'm skipping over the scene with Luz finding the staff a little, but I'd like to say it's interesting how the execution of this is going. When she says that there must be a reason she's "like this" compared to folk back at home, she wants a reason for her life. To rationalize why she's different and not really understood. Kind of gives neurodivergent kid vibes of that phase a lot of us had where you like different things and function differently but want a *why*. Just feeling like an alien and wanting someone to bring you somewhere where you'll fit in and it'll all be explained. With Luz this is her moment of trying to rationalize her life with the concept of fate bringing her here. She could've said how she CAN do magic now, how she's special, or rejoiced in just generally being able to get her dreams to come true. Instead it's reconciliation, a "ha!" that the world was wrong and that you ARE the way you're supposed to be. A more external want.
Cutting back to Eda I'm surprised she says it's a demon. I'm curious how demons work in this world and the scale of them if King is also one? Is he still capable of more magic then?
Poor Luz. Girl is fighting against the Mimic from FNAF. As a fan of puppetry and body horror I do love this and kind of want to see (or do) a redraw.
Poor Luz. Is she getting like, cat fished right now? By the old guy? I guess even beforehand she was already talking about wizards, so the old guy might've used her concept of a wizard already ahead of time. That might be complicated though.
I feel bad how pessimistic I am about this. I'm like what's this gonna do now, suck her soul? Drain her energy? Take her youth? Stranger danger.
I kind of assumed everything was cats since Luz likes cats but it's interesting there's some physical manifestation that may've been here beforehand. Love Eda also having to deal with cats. Mean, but hope this crumbling effect happens to the hot guy as baby's first trauma.
Giant foggy fields away from society is, unfortunately the peak place for human trafficking even if it's fun to hang out in them.
Going to be honest I'm just lost now. A cat town with some attractive dude? Is Luz hallucinating right now? Dude is even saying "Angstmore" so it seems like a fanfiction from her head.
YUP. 100% some wizard who mastered illusions.
Glad that Eda calls it out just a shame it's mean. Also....Maybe they were censored from saying "sucker" but kind of odd that they say "mark" here. I'm wondering if that's a specific term here, especially for humans? Luz earlier says how there has to be a reason she's the only human and I have to assume it's a bad one that we'll find out.
Eda beating up Hooty heals my soul. I just want him to say bad words still but him getting punched is also good.
Ah. Immediate asshole vibe.
Look. Transguy myself I still know young girls trying to have honest deep talks with weird, rich sparkley old guys never ends well. Eda just told her to avoid guys in flip flops.
He got her a quest but man. It's kind of clearly the type of thing that'll explode. I'm assuming it's some sort of human trap.
I feel bad for her since I feel like, and assume as a whole that this show will be about a matter of creating your own destiny when there's no set path for you. The other big shows at the time had some level of "destiny" tied into their narratives. Star VS by the nature of having high expectations as a magic princess, Steven Universe due to being trapped in trying to figure out his "fate" from his Mom, and Gravity Falls still ties into some level of destiny for viewers to figure out throughout the season with how to defeat Bill Cipher. Luz has directly stumbled into this world not meant for her and I actually kind of hope it's just by chance and she has to overcome that it's not for a human. It's that kind of hope that as a kid you are special and "the one" that people have to learn greatness isn't from that, but something you have to create yourself.
Aside from Luz, only just realizing this episode this is Alex Hirsch. His voice reminded me of Bill Cipher but I had to look it up real quick because man. How does he do that with his voice??
Don't roast my girl like this <3 Poor girl.
Luz is entering a household of no morning people. Not even the staff want to be awake right now and I feel that.
Very much giving "I'm too tired right now go find something else to do". It is fun to see the whole far view of the town though. It's something from a design point kind of immediately tells a story where it looks like an entire creature on it's side and a city buildt around it. Hoping we get a Kiki's delivery service reference out of this.
I don't want to rapidly screenshot the intro song but some take aways is it's interesting we only have about three more characters introduced in the animation introduction. I know "luzamity?" to be a popular ship which I think is the green haired girl (Amity?) and Luz but I'm not quite sure how canon that is or if disney tried to kill that. The other two are pretty plain that seem more side-kick type I'm assuming we'll see soon if they're already in the intro. Very surprised there's no big bad portrayed in the introduction? With any fantasy cartoon it's like I know there's at least one, just no idea who and surprised it's not that obvious.
Aside from that, big worm time. Worm approved but I assume that's not a big bad but a normal evil worm. Lovely animation as always.
NOOOO she's so cute but I feel like Eda is going to come out and think this is embarrassing and a bad witch fit </3
Poor baby girl. Just be nice to her :( Kind of feels odd with how irrelevant she feels to Eda today.
The Owl House 02
Jumping in straight from the first episode with no time skip is a little surprising, but really nice to see since it gives us some more detail. Seeing the room in light makes me a bit curious about the chest and picture frame to the left. I'm wondering if this used to be someone else's space?
I'm going to lose my mind every time this thing speaks. The fact that this guy is connected to the house.... I need to see the house stand up or be thrown somewhere to reveal it's like Baby Yaga's house with giant chicken legs.
Hello! Going to liveblog The Owl House episode two "Witches before Wizards" shortly!
The episode titles seem a bit direct with the obvious twist on the "bros before" saying where I'd assume Luz will follow a wizard's input to learn fellow witches come first? Seems like it'd be a little odd but I guess Luz does seem pretty trusting of others.
Wanted to say thank you to anyone watching along! I hope it can be a fun way to look back at the series and refresh on it some while I finally see what I've been missing. I'm curious since I know the series got cut short but I'm hoping that doesn't impact these first two seasons too much.
I know Luz replies that it's since maybe no human tried but I feel like there has to be some bigger reason for this? Hmm. Gonna have to remember the weird reaction to it.
Overall cute.
Final thoughts:
I understand why this is as popular as it is. I really hate to compare projects but... I think the animation and execution is close enough to gravity falls and other works on Disney at the time that it feels like you're coming home. It feels cozy and comfortable. For a while, and even now, we have an issue of these shows popping up and just trying to stand out on their own stylistically while being story-wise similar. This really reminds me of so many different comfortable cartoons while still seeming like a new story.
With them falling into the summer camp for three months rule I'm curious how that'll go in the long-term. I think? The show has three seasons? So I'm curious if each season is a month, and the ending being end of Summer but I think that'd be a shame. I kind of hope we get to see her become a witch and the transition to what happens after.
Overall something I'll surely keep trying to watch and hopefully remember to liveblog. Trying to catch up. If you read, thank you.
Have a good night <3
