The frown never left his lips as the cool evening air welcomed them beyond the threshold of the back door. “This isn’t talking now?” Confused settled in where it wasn’t supposed to. After all, she didn’t have to ask him to move in with her. But the house was so lonely without another occupant. Even he knew that. Too many years kept them apart and he didn’t want to lose that again. So he agreed. But there was a small part of him that didn’t want them to rush too quickly into things without all the other unresolved feelings and emotions of the past they had left to fix. Because how do you expect a federal agent to be dating the sister of a wanted convict without there being any sort of tension or awkwardness?
The job did keep him busy. Some of it through no fault of his own, but mostly to shield some of the conflicting feelings and emotions in him. He didn’t know how to express a lot of it out loud. He just kept it all bottled up. He was never quite good with words, moreso actions than anything else. And it left him exhausted. Hell, he couldn’t really discuss the nature of some of these cases with her. But it was because he didn’t need to burden their relationship with his work. Outside of work, he was just Brian O’Conner. A guy who had a love of import cars, racing and speed. Who loved to surf, if he ever really got the chance to go and showered his girl with all the love she adored and admired. (Or did. Not anymore.) She was right about that. Hehadn’t been that loving and respectable boyfriend to her. He didn’t care for her and take her out like he used to. His job really was affecting his love life. “I don’t hate you… Why would you say that?” He pressed his lips together, taking a few steps back. I hate myself.
He saw the tears well up in her eyes and he stiffened up. No. I’ve heard you a few times, baby. Cry yourself to sleep. And I know that’s my fault. I just… But he thought it was because she was mad at him. He thought she was upset with him for taking up this occupation. It was legal. It paid the bills and kept a roof over their heads. Didn’t that amount to anything? Weren’t they trying to keep the criminal acts in the past? Now he wasn’t so sure. Because she was also right about them not talking much in the last several months. Months, really? Has it been that long since I’ve loved you that way? “Just admit it. You are. You never wanted me to go back into law enforcement.”
Where was the affectionate loving guy she fell in love with? Despite just pouring out her heart to him, Mia still felt that Brian was pushing her away. What more could she do? What more could she say? He just kept making it about him instead of seeing where she was coming from. Was he really that blind as to how terrible he was making her feel? ‘I’m not ! But keep telling yourself that so you can sleep better at night and not feel like a prick for treating me as if I don’t even exist.’ Harsh words, but they were nothing compared to how she felt inside. He had turned their love so cold. ‘What’s the point anymore, Brian? Let’s just break up. You clearly don’t see what you’re doing to me, & I’m tired of being your punching bag. I love you, but I cannot do this to myself.’ Mia placed the back of her hand against her mouth, & turned around in attempt to hide her sobs. She was broken, & all she wanted was Brian’s love, but it was now clear that she wasn’t going to get it.
