Since Alex was off she’d offered to help Phobe out and to babysit Dani. Thankfully Dani and her were buddies at this point which meant Alex took every opportunity she had to spoil the small girl  — today had been no different. Checking her phone to see that Phone had texted to let her know that a Cameron was picking up Dani today instead of her.

“Keep going without me.” Alex told the girl, she pushed herself up off the floor and headed towards the door when she heard the knock. “Hi!” Alex smiled as she opened the door for him. “You must be Cameron, I’m Alex.” Extending her hand out him. “Dani’s just finishing up her game, but she should be ready in about five minutes. I got her bags and everything packed and ready for you tho.” Gesturing to the little girls bags sitting on the bench by the entry way. “Do you want to come in or need help carrying her stuff to the car?”

Cameron wasn’t a judgmental person by nature, but the moment Alex opened the door he was appraising her. She looked normal. Pretty, even, and with all of her teeth. No obvious signs of drug use, and she lived in a nice town home. He’d once surrounded himself with rather seedy company, but when it came to Danielle he couldn’t allow it. She deserved better, and she’d have it. 

“Hey, yeah. I am.” Their handshake was brief but firm. Cameron had perfected the social gesture some years ago. A former law professor once told him he wasn’t really a man if he couldn’t shake. “I’ll come in, thanks.” Couldn’t accurately judge a place by the outside or entry way. “You have a beautiful home.” He was in the market to buy but didn’t say so. “I think I can manage with her things, but I appreciate the offer. I also appreciate you,” His tone was genuine, although his cerulean hues never met with her chestnut. “From what I can tell, you’ve been a great help to Phobe. Dani, too.” He felt a bit awkward every time he met one of Phobe’s friends. Cameron didn’t know what she’d told them about his whereabouts, or their former, shady professions. 

While gathering Dani’s things onto one arm, Cameron politely made small talk. “Are you from the area? I grew up in Redding, upstate.”

He makes a wild turn there, nearly bumping into an old lady, but he needs to lose those poorly disguised reporters standing in front of his apartment. Spotting someone that did not seem busy running somewhere, he approaches them calmly as to not startle them. “Hi, this is a weird request but can you pretend we are talking about something?”

Cameron’s tall frame was leaned up against a brick wall. He was waiting for the launder to finish with his clothes and chose to do so outside. It was a warm day, but he liked to people watch. One person was running wildly up the street, nearly bumping into an older woman, but seemed to slow as he approached Cameron. It was an unusual request, but coolly he replied. “Yeah, sure. I mean.. technically, we already are talking.” Cam huffed a quiet laugh. “You runnin’ from a girl? I’ve been there man. Best to tell her you’ve moved on or caught the clap. That always seems to do it.”

Oh fuck. Was he serious? Could he actually be serious about staying? There was such a pitter-patter in her chest determining what exactly she should begin to ask him first. His words striking her heart further as he mentioned the fact she was his. Was she supposed to be his? Fuck it only rose further questions that she needed to be answered. “Still a troublemaker.” 

His words caused the smirk on her face to fade as her expression softened. Those words were something Phobe had never expected to hear in her entire lifetime. She didn’t even want Dani to grow up like her and those were not words she would have used to describe herself as. “I…” It was the only thing that was able to get out as her eyes fell hesitantly in an attempt to collect her thoughts and emotions all in one. Having his skin against her own the brunette looked up at him once more. Without any thought of her actions, she moved to straddle his lap. Letting her hands cup his face as her thrumbs ran over his jawline making sure for the final time he was real before pressing a hard kiss against his lips. 

One kiss led to another. Wide palms and long fingers knotted deep inside chocolate tresses, holding their faces together. She tasted exactly how he remembered, but not in a boring way. Phobe Cole was anything but boring. She was magnetic, drawing Cameron back again and again over the years. Was it love? He wondered but didn’t know. It, she, was something alright, and what he did know was that he wanted more. Cameron’s greed was conveyed in every kiss and caress. His lips and tongue devoured hers, while his free hand worked to unclasp her bra. They were moving fast, but it all felt so familiar. Like coming home.

Suddenly, Cameron paused. His breathe came hard, while he maneuvered their bodies horizontal. His full frame was pressed against Phobe’s now, and a smirk had found his lips. “This is why we have a baby.” He murmured, before rejoining their lips in a kiss.

He’d come by to talk, but she was irresistible. The thought of going back to his hotel later made his stomach knot up, but she couldn’t come with him, and he shouldn’t stay. Although, Cameron did a lot of things he shouldn’t.

Eyeing the other person every couple of seconds while his pen worked on the piece of napkin, he finally held it up after about five minutes or so, basking in his work. “Had some trouble with the nose, but it looks just about right, don’t you?” He showed them his drawing, grinning as he waited for their reaction.

Laughter bellowed from Cameron’s lips. “Oh yeah man, this is sick.” For all his talents, art was not one of them. He couldn’t even draw a stick figure. “So you’re an artist or something?” Cam asked, while continuing to inspect the realistic doodle.

“If I hear one more firework go off, I’m leaving Santa Monica.” Lina muttered in frustration, hands gripping her iced latte and nearly causing the lid to pop off. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy fireworks, but loud pops in general tended to give her the jump scares. And Lina thrived on coming across as calm and collected. 

Cameron was working on a case with earplugs in to drown out the noise of the coffee shop and post fourth of July activities outside. Eyes the hue of diamonds flickered up from his laptop to see the brunette across from him speaking. He didn’t have to ask her to repeat herself. Her body language was clear. “It’ll wrap up soon.” A calm collected voice reassured the wide eyed stranger. “Want a pair?” He offered, with a bag of orange, disposable earplugs in his hand.

It was after dinner time but not too late in the night. Cameron had been off work for awhile. Prior to taking a seat at the bar he’d been out house hunting. The sticker shock drove him to drink. Even his well endowed savings account gave him little certainty in securing a home for himself. Hope was not futile, though. Recently, he was hired at a local law firm. They catered to the rich and famous, of whose depravity knew no end. So Santa Monica was expensive, but there was plenty of money to be made.

Someone sat a few seats down from him, to whom he gave a polite head nod, unaware at the moment they knew one another.

There were a lot of words all at once and Phobe was uncertain if she was actually hearing what he was saying correctly. “What?” She questioned furrowing her brows at him not if what he had exactly meant by that. “Like stay for a while? Stay forever? Stay for exactly when?” There were many questions spewing from her as she still made an attempt to comprehend that he was even here. 

There were so many questions that she needed to be answered and she needed them answered now. There were so many things that she even wanted to ask him. Between him in general, his parents, fuck she didn’t even have Danielle with her. He was here and she didn’t have Dani. Dani didn’t even know of him for the most part. Fuck now there had to be an introduction and Phobe had no idea how that hell she was supposed to live up to any expectations he might have had of her. 

Having the smallest of a smirk on her face when he mentioned trouble she couldn’t help rolling her eyes. “I like trouble and don’t care what they have to say. I have sick time for a reason.” She pointed out never letting his hand go as she moved back into the apartment. Things should have been perfect the first moment he came here and things were far from perfect. His question caused the smallest of a smile to appear on her lips. “Doesn’t cuss and happier but… Yeah. Kind of like me.” 

“For as long as you’ll have me.” Cameron replied coolly. In most matters, he was extremely level headed. There was much to discuss between them, so of course he felt anxious about the uncertainty to come, but he believed they would work things out. Which he told Phobe, as he pulled her by their interlaced hands onto the couch. “Ah, well..  everything will be all right then, my little troublemaker..” 

There was already a smile on Cameron’s face when Phobe spoke of their daughter. Her words made the expression spread. “I hope she’s just like you.” Long, nimble fingers had found exposed olive flesh, which they brushed across like it were something sacred. “Beautiful, strong, fearless..” His hand was halfway up the back of Phobe’s shirt now, sprawled across the deepest dip of her spine. Nothing had happened the way Cameron planned. He never meant to get involved in a drug cartel or get Phobe pregnant. However, for all the moments perceived as mistakes he couldn’t find a single one worth regretting, as they all lead him here.

The backseat of his Jeep Grande Cherokee was outfitted with a new booster seat. Coloring books, snacks, and anything else Dani could need were thoughtfully packed in a bag on the floorboard. He was picking her up from the sitters, a friend of Phobe’s, and as ready as he could be for the night ahead. Yet, Cameron was still nervous. Due to the circumstances of his and Phobe’s former employment, he had only spent very short amounts of time with his daughter. Really, they barely knew one another, but Cam wanted to change that. Santa Monica was his home now, so he could change that.

After a hard knock on the door of Alex’s townhouse, Cam’s hands found his pockets. His posture was relaxed and approachable, despite the stiff nature of his dress. He’d accepted a position with a nice law firm in the city and wore a suit and tie every day. It wasn’t his style in the least, but his job was all about the money.

The world just seemed to sort of stop as her body completely froze in her place. Her senses completely washing away as a million questions came rushing at her all at once. The embrace of his arms around her causing her just the slightest of relief before finding her own arms wrapping tightly around his waist completely overcome as everything came hitting her at once. 

“Called- sent a letter- Fuck you are really here.” Looking up at him as she attempted to find some sort of words that didn’t make her sound like the stupidest person in the universe. “I uh- was. I should call out. I’m going to call out. Holy fuck you are really here. You’re finally here. Do you want to come in? How long are you staying for? I’m warning you now it is kind of a mess.” 

Laughter jostled Cameron’s broad chest. At first the sound was a low rumble, but it grew to a bellowing noise. Phobe amused him with her disbelief, but he reassured her with tenderness. “Yeah, I’m really here.. really here..” He didn’t know how to say it, how to announce his intent to make Santa Monica his home, so he just said it. “..to stay. I mean, as long as you and Danielle do.”

It was a lot. He knew. His arrival and intent to stay brought forth more questions than they answered. Cameron only knew he wanted to be a part of his daughter’s life. The chance to help raise her meant everything to him. Hopefully Phobe would understand and be willing to make something work, but he had no expectations from her. He didn’t feel entitled to a role, given his time away.

“Don’t miss work,” He said but didn’t mean. “You’ll get in trouble.” Not that she cared, Cameron immediately thought. For all his protests, he was already guiding them through the door of Phobe’s apartment. It was messy, but Cam wasn’t surprised. He thought it was cute, kind of. Toys and shoes and clothes everywhere. With a grin he asked, “So, she’s just like you - huh?”

The day was decent and he was just sitting in the park with a massive dog snoring at his feet. Trevor took a pull from his beer and grunted when Lump rolled over and pinned his foot down with his massive weigh. “That necessary?” he grumbled and smirked when a low, groaning growl answered him. “Whatever.”

Sweat poured from his face and stained his t-shirt. Cameron had been running through the park for the last forty-five minutes. When he stopped for a short break, the blood rushed so loudly in his ears he couldn’t quite hear what the other man said. “What was that?” Cameron asked, unaware Trevor had been talking to the dog. “Didn’t quite hear ya, man.”

Letting fingers move through her dark locks Phobe was rushing around the apartment in an attempt to check off everything she needed for the evening. Danielle was already with Mac for the evening while she tried getting her life together before work. “Phobe, keys, purse.” She muttered to herself considering everything she might need. Sending a quick text to her boss she sighed heavily before actually stepping outside. Before she had even made her way down the hallway there was a blonde sight in the corner of her eyes. Hesitating for a moment her head lifted only to further focus on the figure from behind. “Oh fuck.” She whispered under her breath unable to feel anything besides the loud and rapid pounding in her chest. “C-Cam?” This had to be a dream. God this had to be a dream. 

Tying up loose ends in Texas proved an easier feat than Cameron had first imagined. Agreeing to represent their former bosses in all legal matters for perpetuity had a lot to do with that. Despite the consequences of such, he wasn’t giving it much thought. No, at the moment the only things that mattered had chocolate tresses and big brown eyes. Sights of which he spotted at the end of a long, apartment hall. Cameron approached her with haste. “Phobe.” His voice was not a whisper but a boom. Long, firm arms pulled the pair together in an embrace Cam made no move to end. 

I missed you. Where’s Dani? Can I see her? There were so many things Cameron wanted to say, but he didn’t speak at all. Being emotionally raw wasn’t his strong suit. Even with her. The only woman with whom he’d shared a continuous and intimate bond.

“I should have called,” He eventually said. “I know I said it’d be a few weeks before I could visit, but..” But things had changed. He wasn’t here just to visit. Cameron was here to stay. “Are you leaving for work?” Eyes as blue as crystals peered down, over here, taking note of her work clothes. “I can take you.”

The business was running smoothly, her staff had the orders for the fourth of July under control. What wasn’t delivered, or picked up yet was ready to go save a few last minute orders. At this point, any late-comers would have to take basic patriotic themed treats like the fresh batch of patriotic cake pops she’s currently adding to the display. The cake pops were complimentary to shoppers for today. Hearing the door chime announce new customer arrivals, she popped up from behind the counter, “Hi!” Thalia beamed, hoping she didn’t startle anyone in the process. If the customers weren’t familiar with the bakery’s layout it would have appeared as if the store was unmanned. With Amanda and Carla currently tending to customers in other parts of the bakery, Thalia was left to entertain the customers in the meantime. “Welcome to King of Cakes. I’m Thalia, how can I help you?”

“Bakery near me.” A ding resonated from Cameron’s car’s sound system, confirming that Siri was researching his request. “King of Cakes is five minutes from you,” The robotic  voice continued. “Would you like directions?” To which Cameron replied, “Yes.” Being new to Santa Monica, Cam needed directions to get anywhere. Unlike some buildings, King of Cakes was easy to spot. He saw the treats from the bakery window before even getting out of his car.

Upon entry, his innately calm nature was not disturbed by the unexpected and exuberant greeting. “Hey, thanks. I’m Cam.” He said, because she had said her own name. “Looking for cheesecake, do you have any?”
