“What can I do for you?”
“As you know I’m not just anyone darling. How have you been?”
“You've got that right beautiful.”
“I’ve been very well Faye, its been a while has it not?”
“I wonder...”
“But is there really a choice?”
“I guess not, but it’s still obscene.”
A Refreshing Face
“Very well, thank you, Chess.” Wren took a sip of her drink. “And yourself? How has performing been going?”
“Smoothly to say the least, besides the occasional guard interference I’ve been making decent money this week.” Chess smiled a bit as he tapped her nose. “And you? Read anything interesting since we’ve last spoke?”
“Or maybe met anyone interesting?”
“I wonder...”
“Probably about the same time pigs fly.”
“You know, I hear they can, but they choose not to for fear they will be coveted.” The madman chuckled a bit as he moved the invitation in his grasp. “So then, how have you been my little crusader?”
A Refreshing Face
“Isn’t it though.” She added with a grin.
“Sound to me like you are lucky to be alive. We should probably celebrate with another drink.”
“Why stop at one?” He smiled raising his hand as he called over the bartender, pointing to two of the glasses on the wall he leaned over the bar, as the man turned his back, lifting a bottle of whiskey and place it on the surface.
“Are you willing to stay for a long night?”
“I wonder...”
“Chess!” Belle said looking around to make sure no one had heard, “don’t go just saying those things” she punched him in the arm, “you know that there’s someone always listening…”
“but you are right…” she said with a small smile. “Now you said you were willing to try the new recipe for pancakes I found… you still wanna do it?” Belle was awful in the kitchen, but she was determined to get better. And practice makes better.
Chess turned as he smiled, his cerulean lenses reflecting the sunlight a bit as he put his arm around his friend. “Oh Belle, you’re always so worried about me. I swear, you and Rob could get together and try to brow beat me into submission with your concern.” Chuckling a bit as he nodded.
“I am starving mon cher, so we’d better hurry or I might keel over.”
I wonder...”
“Those are very dangerous words you’re uttering, mister. If they get back to the queen, she could very well have your head.”
“If the Queen really wanted my head she could have had it ages ago. I think I’m safe, at least...for now.”
“Should I be worried though mon cher? You don’t really strike me as the type to be starting trouble.” “
“I wonder...”
“When the Queen is going to admit her real age to the public.” The cat spoke opening the invitation that had been placed in the hole in the oak tree he often slept in.
“She can’t honestly believe we’re going to accept that forever.”
Antiquated Pardons
“Excusez-moi, I didn’t see you there.”
A Refreshing Face
“Oh, I don’t. But when you only have a few people to enjoy the occasional drink with, you learn to forgive and forget.”
“How have you been my friend? It’s been quite some time.”
“Your kindness is stirring.” The cat smiled tilting his head. “Almost, too touching.”
“I’ve been better, I’ve been worse. I was held up in the dreaded dungeons for quite a bit till the charges were dropped.” Lifting his drink taking a sip he shrugged. “Its always someone saying my tricks are real magic, those are the people who truly know how to ruin a good party.”
A Refreshing Face
“Well, I’m not drinking alone anymore, am I?” Wren gestured to the seat next to her. “Would you like to sit down?”
“Sitting, why what a marvelous idea.” He spoke with a bit of sarcasm as he sat beside her moving his finger tips to the glass. “So then Wren, how has you been mon cher?”
A Refreshing Face
“I’m not really much of a drinker. But I do like seeing a friendly face.”
“A friendly face? I hadn’t realized my face had softened as of yet. I thought I was still in hunting facade.”
“If drinking isn’t your thing mademoiselle, then what may I interest you in? As long as your cup isn’t empty I care not what they fill it with.”
A Refreshing Face
“You know they say, even in the darkness you should never drink alone.”
“I just didn’t think you’d want to join me after my absence.”
“What can I do for you?”
“Not often someone decides to join me for a drink these days mon ami.”
Money for Magic
Wren held the ball in her hands. It couldn’t hurt. “Okay. One… Two… Three!” She tosses the ball into the silk bag.
Grabbing the orb in the bag he tightened it up sealing it inside before whisking it around and throwing it into the air, as it landed behind him there was not a sound of a shatter but a low thud. “Now, if you would retrieve your bag, you may need your purse after all.” He smiled holding his hand out to the bag behind him. “Oh, and if you could retrieve the orb from your pocket for me.”
Though when she felt inside her pocket she would find not an orb, but a crystalline rose.
Old Lies, New Smiles.
Wren grinned as she saw the bookshelf begin to move, and applied her own body weight against it, trying to free it from its position. “Not arrested and made a little money…? Sounds like a better day than some. I remember you told me about a day last March. Didn’t you have to outrun the guards?”
“Might as well have been a week ago mon cher,” Chess laughed before grunting to finally free the bookshelf. “The guards keep me in shape, and I return the favor.” Smiling as he placed all of his weight back onto his feet standing up. “You could say its a give and take really, someone claims I have real magic and there I go again, off to the races as you would say.”
A Clever Cat
“Okay….”
“I just really want a steak. I haven’t had one in a while.”
“Such simple requests are easily made.” The magician smiled as he waited patiently bowing a little. “So are you going to close your eyes or not?”
