Devon waves off the apology. "This is better than some of the other states I've seen from other people. I've had someone with pyrokinesis try to return a burnt laptop."
He falls into the motions of fixing the device, glancing up often with a curious look.
"So you're just here to learn math or something?"
And Tantalus. For such a well-known initiative, there's actually such sparse knowledge for anyone not immediately connected. Of course a lot of people with connections are traumatized so Devon's found it awkward asking much about it.
"If I can get control of my powers I'd like to be a hero. I think I could help people." Really, he just wants to feel whole again. To get himself better.
He looked away, thinking (trying not to think) about Tantalus. He suffered there for years. Taken as only a boy. Quietly, he said, "they erased me. Tries to make a weapon."
Lachlan watched the other assess the fence, and his looked between it and Subject 13, a little smile on his face. He backed away from it, giving the other man enough room not to feel crowded. What he witnessed was a spectacular, if not a little charming, fumble.
"Okay maybe no more of that," Lachlan chuckled and then stepped closer to help Subject 13 out of his predicament, his strength able to easily lift the man and set him down next to him. His hand moved up Subject 13's arm and gripped his shoulder. "You good now?"
His mouth goes slack as he's lifted. Subject 13 knew Lachlan was strong, but he hadn't really expected this. Not at all. Or maybe he was overestimating, because of the whole... drunk thing.
He looked at the hand holding him, quietly grinning. More than alright, in fact.
"Oh yeah. I'm all good."
Devon lets out a low whistle. Poor guy.
"Damn, and there goes my dreams of running away to Vegas with a guy and we get married and become rich."
He sighs then resumes looking over the laptop.
"I think a couple of things got fried so I'll have to replace them. Shouldn't take too long if you wanna hang out for a bit."
He stands from the desk and waves the guy to follow him. He heads into an office with shelves of parts ready for just such an occasion.
"So I'm assuming you're here to learn how to control that," Devon says and he starts taking apart the laptop. "What's that all like?"
The insinuation. Getting married, getting rich. All because he could manipulate probability. It made him flush. He knew it was just flirtation, but damn. Subject 13 started thinking about it.
Maybe his daydream was a bit dirty... but could you blame him?
He follows along and takes a seat, chuckling. "Sorry. Technology tends to have a lot of fragile parts, so it's usually a victim of my powers. Hopefully it's not too badly damaged."
Scratching the back of his head, Subject 13 sighs. "More like... I didn't have anywhere to go. After Tantalus..." His smile faded, briefly, before the mask of being happy was back on. "But it's alright. I'm happy here."
Lachlan watched the other man stand up and looked up at him and then nodded. He stood to his full six foot and four inches, dusting off his pants. "Alright. You good enough to jump a fence?"
He gave the other a playful nudge and then walked across the grass of the backyard to the back fence and reached up. In almost one move, Lachlan lifted himself up and over, landing on the other side with a grunt.
Peering over the fence, Lachlan smiled. "Need a hand?"
Subject 13 stared at the fence. At Lachan getting over effortlessly. And he didn't want to look uncool by comparison. So he faked a confident laugh and made a strong effort at getting over. His head instantly started doing backflips, and he ended up losing his balance.
One leg got caught and he tumbled over with a laugh. It felt good to feel free.
"Tada!" A pause as he caught his breath, then held out a hand. "Uppies?" If he remembered this when he was sober again, he would feel utter humiliation.
Devon takes the laptop with a confused look.
"You know that shit's banned in like twenty countries right? Plus they make safer shit. I see an ad for them like every other day."
He brushes fingers with him as they transfer the laptop, still flirting but now also worrying about the guy. He moves his gaze from the handsome face to the laptop, switching his vision to check if anything is broken or such.
"So I'm guessing it's not the kind of probability that could get you millions of dollars in Vegas?"
Subjecy 13 scratches the back of his head. How could he explain his dependency? That it was the only thing that kept his head quiet. He was on a dose now; thoughts inoculated from the worst of his sensory powers. His head was a warm, floating, mass of clouds.
'My therapist had me try the other stuff. It didn't work well. Blew out some construction and really messed up some dudes day."
He didn't want to think about a casino would do to his powers. What his powers could do to a casino. So much possibility in one place... the thought made his head spin.
"That would be like walking into a lightning storm while throwing metal helmets on people."
Warmth spread through Lachlan as the vodka and beer and cup of jungle juice settled into him. The last sip of vodka that Subject 13 had given him had solidified him, giving him that warm blanket of early drunkeness.
At Subject 13's question, Lachlan thought. The house was full. Wall to wall, ceiling to floor on ever level. He chewed his lip a second more and then glanced over. "There's a park nearby." Lachlan gestured. "Over that fence."
At the confirmation, Subject 13 rose to his feet with the bottle in his hand. He wobbled a bit, odds flashing through his mind. Things that might happen. That could happen. Yet they all bounced off the warm haze of vodka.
He grinned, motioning. "Lead the way, then."
He was normally plagued by indecision but with the vodka blurring his mind he felt confident. Less aware of the possibilities. And Lachan was a strong man, one he was happy to follow.
Lachlan chewed on his lip. He wasn't exactly uncomfortable, but he could sense that the conversation had veered into treacherous waters. He was worried that the other would spiral in some sort of way.
"This place is a safe place, though. A chance for a second chance sort of thing." Lachlan looked at Subject 13, nudging him with his knee gently. "If you need a friend, I'm here, bro." Lachlan looked a the other, worry in his eyes, but offered an easy smile.
"I appreciate that."
He looked down, letting himself sink deeper into drunkenness. It would take time, he knew, but that's alright. Probabilities swam on the edge of his perception. Despite his distress he kept his smile.
Glancing over to Lachan, he abruptly said, "do you want to find somewhere more private? I'm tired of people."
"I seriously doubt you did anything major," Devon says with a smile. "It would take some serious bad luck to mess it up too bad."
He studies the man, noting his handsome features and pretty eyes. He gives him a flirtatious smirk and wink as he holds a hand out for the laptop.
He drags his eyes away from the handsome face to focus on the laptop, shifting through his different visions to see if anything comes up there.
"So were you doing anything when it stopped functioning or did you start it up and it wasn't working then?"
Subject 13 flushes when he's winked at. Devon is insanely hot, and he finds himself feeling nervous suddenly. He offers up the laptop, sheepishly chuckling.
"Well, I take Nullifyne..." the now illegal power dampening drug. The one with serious neurological side effects. "And when I was tapering off last night, my powers went a bit wild. It wouldn't work when I tried to turn it on. I have probability powers... and technology is often a victim."
Almost immediately, Nicholas was raising a hand to stop Subject 13 from backing his way up further before he actually had a chance to say anything. A passing knowledge of most of the student body, as well as an interest in those who might be struggling meant he knew some of what the other had going on.
"Hey, hey, it's fine. You don't need to apologize. If anything I'm glad, I spend too long doing this and I get in trouble." His voice was easy, calm, making sure that the other understood he wasn't mad or anything along those lines. "You wanted the room, right? Or was there something else you were looking for?"
Fake smile. Tired fear. Too many possibilities flooding him.
Subject 13 suddenly hated he hadn't opted to get high today. A bit of Nullifyne would really help right now... He desperately wished it was a bit more quiet.
"I did, but it's fine. You can have it. I'm okay." That grin, always on. Subject 13 began to wonder if he was even a person with a face, or just a smiling mask.

It at least felt like Fortitude Day had been a success, and with things largely winding down, Nicholas couldn't bring himself to stress too much about anything else going on to not take a bit of time to shake some rust off. It's what had him heading to the training rooms after business hours had concluded. Forgetting to set the room to private wasn't exactly rare for him, given that he couldn't really fuck with anything too dangerous even on his better days.
Instead, he ran scenarios over and over again. An observer's point of view, figuring out the places where mistakes were made, where encouragement in a different direction could've led to a better outcome. Of course, that still involved him being in there, and after several hours of trying again and again, he was just about to call it when he became aware of a presence that absolutely was not part of his personal hell strategy test.
"Cancel protocol CG001." He ignored his own wince as the simulation buzzed out of life, and he was trying to flash something close to an apologetic smile. Ignoring the blood dripping from the corner of his mouth, and the pain in his jaw. "I lost track of time, was this room reserved?"

"Sorry, I was waiting a while and wanted to see if someone had forgotten to turn off their session or something."
He sheepishly kicked the floor. It was a bit embarrassing, to run simulations on dealing with people. What kind of loser needed lessons to behave like a person?
Well, the kind of loser who was mentally broken by Tantalus and lost their memories as well as identity.
"But you... you seem busy. I can come back later. Sorry. Sorry."
"Shit." Lachlan breathed at the word hung in the air. "I'm sorry, man." His voice lowered a bit. Of course he had heard about Tantalus. It was part of the fundamental history they learned at the Hall. Lachlan's mouth opened briefly and then shut.
"I fucked up the vibe." Lachlan sighed and then reached over to take a swig of Subject 13's vodka and then handed it back. "Anything I can do to fix it?" Lachlan raised an eyebrow, his tone a little hopeful.
When the vodka was offered, he grabbed it. Perhaps a little too forcefully. Subject 13 took a long gulp, then a second. He coughed at the way it scorched his throat, but would be glad to be intoxicated.
He needed it. Needed to go numb.
"No," he sighed, "I'm broken." He looked at his hands, frowning. Sad little thing. Broken little thing. They'd wanted a Probability Engine. They made a hollowed out and terrified boy.

"My my, aren't we a little overdressed for a slumber party." Virgil winks at the man⊠android⊠man? - knocking on his door. He had messaged Subject 13 earlier in the day, mainly out of boredom, but as the subject matter grew braver in subject matter, so did Virgil's confidence in taking on the man back with him to his dorm. In talking with Subject 13, Virgil had confused himself, assuming Subject 13's naming was pointing towards an automata origin. He opens the door wider, showing off his shirtless state while doing so. "As the local sleep expert, and sleep adjacent activities", he winks, "I made sure to bring as many pillows that I could find. Even me."
"Bot like you might get chilly often, I don't mind help you warm up." Virgil mewls, holding Subject 13 by the hand before pulling him into his room. He leads him inside his dorm and leading him into the kitchenette, bowls full of sugary snacks rest on top of the counter; caramel popcorn, s'mores, gummi rings, candied nuts, and additional marshmallows. "Feel free to get as much as you like, even if you don't eat this kind of stuff usually." Virgil chuckles.
To be honest, Subject 13 was deeply confused. Still, he followed Virgil into the room, smiling. Because he always smiled. The front he put on of being overly polite, too accommodating, was there like it always was.
Truth be told, he didn't even know if he wanted this. Not in the 'I'm having doubts' way. In the 'Tantalus stripped me of all my choices so I just obey' kind of way.
He was going to keep smiling, regardless. He wanted this. He was certain of it. Right?
Seeing the snacks, he grabbed a gummy worm and popped it in his mouth. "Yummy." But then he had to give a contemplative look. "So... why do you keep talking like that? Obviously I eat. I love gummies."

Resistance. Mason wasnât actively trying to read the otherâs mind, but the mental vibration was unmistakable. Was physical comfort not the way to go about this? He couldnât tell. Since most of his own torture had been psychological, physical touch was the kind of thing that comforted him.
Mason pulled his arm back, giving Subject 13 his personal space back and offering an apologetic smile. If he felt protective over this boy before, he certainly doubled down on the feeling now.
âIs it?â Mason asked, knowing well enough that not everything was fine. In fact, he believed most things were not fine at all. âBecause Iâm here and I feel like I havenât fully escaped them yet. I donât know if you feel the same way but⊠yeah. Maybe Iâm just a little paranoid. When I saw you I thought⊠I thought youâd like the company of someone who kind of understands how shitty itâs been.â
He made a small pause, studying all of the Subject's body for a moment.
"... Or should I give you your privacy back?"
He was trying to keep the faked smile on, but it wasn't all that convincing anymore. Not with probability rushing through his mind. He was tense, too tense. He wanted to just run. Some part of him couldn't escape the fear that this was all just part of the experiment.
"No, no. It's fine. Everything's fine." A terrible lie. Not even well delivered.
He gave a nervous chuckle, stepping away and into the room. There was a bottle of vodka in the fridge, and he barely resisted the urge to get it and drink. He'd wait until he was alone to try and drown the bad feelings.
