WELCOME TO THE BLOG

Since there seem to be quite a few new people finding this space lately I thought it was worth pinning a quick explanation of what you’ll find here.

This blog is, first and foremost, a discussion blog.

I post about Ewan, the characters he plays, interviews, press appearances, industry discussions, fandom culture, media coverage, character analysis, and sometimes the person behind the performances.

Some posts are serious. Some are thoughtful. Some are me writing an essay about a man who insists he’s very boring while simultaneously giving us enough material to overanalyse for months. It varies.

One thing I do think is important to say is that I don’t believe discussions about an actor have to stop the second a conversation moves beyond their latest project. Human beings are naturally curious about other human beings. That’s always been true and probably always will be. It’s not unique to Ewan.

That said, I also think there are lines.

My rule is very simple:

Would I say this to Ewan’s face?

If the answer is no, I won’t post it.

I don’t go digging through private accounts. I don’t hunt for information. I don’t track down friends and family. I don’t spend hours trying to uncover things people clearly intended to keep private. And just as importantly, I won’t post things that other people have found by doing those things either.

There are real people involved, and I think that’s important to remember.

At the same time, I also think it’s important to be realistic about how fandoms work.

I’ve noticed that many of the larger fan spaces understandably choose not to discuss anything relating to an actor’s personal life whatsoever. That’s completely their right, and plenty of people prefer that approach.

The unintended consequence, though, is that those conversations don’t actually disappear. Curiosity doesn’t disappear. People don’t suddenly stop being interested or curious.

Unfortunately, what often happens instead is that those discussions get pushed into much more extreme spaces, where people are actively digging for information and crossing boundaries that should never be crossed.

Personally, I think there should be room for something else.

A space where people can discuss the work, the characters, the industry, fandom culture, and yes, occasionally Ewan, without feeling the need to become internet detectives in the process or be shamed for daring to ask a question.

I also think it’s important to acknowledge reality. If something has already been seen by tens of thousands of people online, pretending nobody saw it doesn’t make it disappear. Acknowledging that something exists is not the same as encouraging it, sharing it, or approving of it. I wish truly some of these photos and posts didn’t exist but they do.

I’d much rather conversations happen openly, respectfully and with boundaries than leave them entirely to people who don’t have any.

So if you’re looking for a space that’s purely about acting projects, this probably won’t always be your cup of tea.

If you’re looking for invasive gossip, you’ll be disappointed too.

What you’ll find here is discussion. Sometimes thoughtful discussion, sometimes silly discussion, completely unnecessary discussion, but discussion nonetheless.

Condal and Hess do not care about the discourse on any actor, Ewan specifically, never got a word of support of any kind after the massive scrutiny on his looks. Even big fan accounts that stood up for Olivia, Emma, Tom and Fabien put out statements asking the fan base to stop and be civil with them, but never showed the same kindness to Ewan. The biggest one of them actually joined the viral hate and made fun of him themselves. We know he was bummed about it by his reaction on that Esquire video where he mentioned his insane diet and workout to get in shape beforehand. C&H even tried to make Sylvi breastfeed Aemond for S2 and luckily, the actress declined. Whatever the outcome is, at least Ewan looks happy with the turn his career has taken this year so I will stick with that, wait on updates from the other projects and hope that he's not affected as last time.

One thing somebody pointed out yesterday (I can’t remember if I posted it) is that whenever Ewan talks about Aemond, he always thanks hair and makeup. Every time. Years of interviews, and that’s consistently who he goes out of his way to mention.

Now, am I saying he’s secretly got a dartboard with Ryan Condal’s face on it? No.

But combined with Fabian basically saying the quiet part out loud this week, it does make me wonder. Ewan is still an actor on the rise, Ryan is one of the most powerful people attached to one of the biggest shows on television, and openly slagging off your bosses is generally considered a terrible career move. Which is exactly why Fabian being so blunt caught my attention. Thanking hair and make up is the diplomatic answer.

I don’t think we’re talking full-blown behind-the-scenes warfare. Ewan is literally doing events with Ryan. But I also don’t get the impression they’re all exchanging Christmas cards and telling each other how brilliant they think the scripts are.

The Sylvi breastfeeding idea is the perfect example. And my reaction was just: yeah, of COURSE they did.

Because it increasingly feels like the writers don’t believe the audience is capable of understanding subtext. Every idea has to be dragged out into the open, explained, circled in red pen and then explained again for good measure.

The thing that really pissed me off, though, was the reaction to Ewan after season two. The body shaming was disgusting. Here’s a bloke who clearly put an insane amount of work into transforming his body for the role, only for people to spend months acting like secondary school bullies about it. And not just random weirdos either. Big accounts like you said. Accounts with huge followings. Accounts that absolutely knew better.

It’s nasty. It’s pathetic. And frankly it says far more about them than it ever did about him. Which is why I genuinely wouldn’t be shocked if we saw less nudity this season. If I got that kind of reaction, I’d be thinking twice too.

Then again if he does get naked in season three, that’s objectively the funniest outcome. Imagine getting body shamed by half the internet for two years and then just rocking up and doing it again anyway. Elite levels of “go fuck yourselves.”

At this point my faith in the cast is about a thousand times higher than my faith in the writing. The actors are the reason I’m still excited. The writers are the reason I’m nervous.

It sounds like they really let Ewan show more nuances to Aemond. Especially since he said he felt challenged in s3. Even if my expectations are super low on the writing, I am confident that he will give a great performance. He is able to make even bad writing compelling, especially if they gave him a decent amount to chew on. Which sounds like they did.

Whatever happens with the writing the one thing I’m confident about is that the actors, Ewan especially, will have put as much nuance into these characters as humanly possible. Whether people end up liking the story choices or not, I don’t doubt for a second that he’ll have done everything he can with the material he’s been given, and that’s what I’m most looking forward to seeing.

I’m also trying not to decide I hate a season I haven’t actually watched yet. My timeline this morning is full of people reacting to alleged leaks and second-hand plot summaries, but Twitter/X reactions are rarely a good reflection of how the wider audience feels. It’s a bit like restaurant reviews — the people who thought it was perfectly fine generally aren’t racing online to write 14 posts about it. The loudest opinions tend to be the ones we see most.

Do I have concerns? Oh yeah. But I’d rather judge what’s actually on screen than what someone’s cousin’s dog supposedly heard from a leak account.

My biggest hope is that people separate their feelings about the writing from the performances. If there are story choices fans don’t like, I hope Ewan doesn’t end up taking the brunt of that, because those are two very different things. We’ve seen it with Olivia and Fabian already.

And on a completely random note, I do keep wondering whether we’ll see Aemond quite as uh….exposed..! this season. Not in a thirsty way before anyone starts 😭, but because there was such an absurd amount of discourse about his appearance after season two that I genuinely wonder if it affected how they’ll approach those scenes going forward. Probably not, but it’s crossed my mind more than once.

His involvement was released into industry press. The filming location was included as part of the press release :)

Is the "undisclosed role" in that Esquire article Fonda? I thought it was already known so I find it odd that they wrote it that way. Is it possible he is filming something else in France in addition to Fonda?

This one threw me too?! Perhaps he meant he couldn’t say what his role is IN the film? But Fonda is filming in Dax.

Perhaps he didn’t want to even say it because he doesn’t want to be pressed into details?

I'm new to hear that he was in a relationship at all, can someone tell me how people ended up finding out and what the current drama is with that, please?

The short answer is that people know who F is because social media remains humanity’s greatest enemy when it comes to keeping secrets.

Back during the Season 2 press run she was leaving comments on Brady and Davey’s posts that were noticeable enough for fans to start recognising her name. That’s really the reason she ended up on anyone’s radar in the first place.

If she hadn’t done that, I genuinely don’t think most people would have known who she was. Outside of that, she’s only ever been spotted a handful of times, usually at work events, in the background of videos with Brady or Davey, or in situations that could easily be explained by the fact she works in the industry and for his agency. It wasn’t until the Paris train station sighting last year that most people would have had any reason to even ask who she was.

Everything else is basically breadcrumb territory. People finding things online, connecting dots, making assumptions, and trying to build a picture from very limited information. Maybe they were together, maybe they weren’t. Maybe they’re still together, maybe they’ve split up. None of us actually know because nothing has ever been confirmed.

I think it’s also important to understand why some people have such a strong reaction whenever her name comes up. Part of that is because people found old social media posts and comments that she made when she was younger which contained things that many people found offensive. On top of that, her mum had a very controversial X account before it was locked down. Some people have therefore bundled the two together and treated them as one issue, which personally I don’t agree with. I think people should be judged on their own actions, not those of their parents.

The reason the current social media stuff gets so much attention is because, whatever the truth is, it’s hard to understand the benefit. If they’re still together, she knows by now that people recognise her name and will immediately start discussing any activity. If they’re not together, people will still read meaning into it. Either way, it creates conversation that didn’t need to exist.

And that’s really been the story from the beginning. The biggest sources of speculation haven’t been secret sightings or dramatic revelations. They’ve been social media activity that didn’t need to happen in the first place. If privacy was the goal, drawing attention to yourself within a fandom that analyses absolutely everything was probably always going to have the opposite effect.

I don’t want to sound like a killjoy but I’m getting really tired of the comments repeatedly saying he should be in a Twilight reboot or in a vampire movie or in that shitshow wizard franchise. Come on, people, time to get creative, he deserves so much better than that! Sorry just venting lol

My personal thoughts after reading the article is that he fears getting stuck with Aemond forever.

He desires to be a chameleonic actor, he has stated this before, and a character like Aemond Targaryen can drag him into a position where he may get trapped inside the franchise.

Maybe that's why he stopped attending ComicCons. And probably also the reason why he decided to go with a suit that resembles the real Ewan and not Second the character.

A great example would be Kit Harrington. It is difficult to separate him from Jon Snow. And, being sincere, we haven't seen him grow as an actor since the end of Game of Thrones.

So, my thoughts are that he chose to be Ewan the actor this time.

We were actually talking about this exact thing the other day. If you search “franchise” on my blog you’ll find a whole rabbit hole of us discussing it.

Typecasting is a very real fear for actors, and I think the Kit Harington comparison is a good one. Jon Snow was such a huge cultural phenomenon that, for a lot of people, he’s still Jon Snow. Game of Thrones was also considerably bigger than House of the Dragon, which makes it even more understandable. I can’t tell you one project name for Kit Harrington. I can think of one film for Emilia Clarke.

That’s why I think Ewan’s career choices make so much sense. We already know he can play the intense terrifying man with the thousand-yard stare. He doesn’t need to prove that again. The smart move is showing people everything else he can do before they decide that’s all he can do.

I love that he said he's feeling comfortable with himself and wants to show it off. He remains a skittish little fidget but he came off assertive and solid the other day with the outfit and the interviews. His words now signal to a pivot towards a new direction and I'm very excited to see it. On a side note, can't help to think that him doubling down on the ‘I live offline’ thing after the like-unlike cycle F pulled thrice now is completely unrelated to their situation/status; it cannot be all peace and rainbows between two people who don't share simple boundaries and life perspectives, it doesn't come off as sustainable or healthy so for the sake of both of them, here's hoping they stay away from each other and that she can figure it out. Her behaviour is beyond strange, to put it kindly.

No outfit in the world is ever going to completely remove the nerves, and if we’re honest, I don’t actually want it to. One of my favourite things about him is that he can turn up in an outrageously dramatic outfit and still somehow look like a man who’s accidentally wandered into a situation that has become much larger than anticipated and doesn’t know what to do with his hands.

I think that’s part of what makes him stand out. In an industry full of people who seem effortlessly polished and confident he still comes across as a fidgety bloke trying to remember where he’s supposed to stand. I love how his PR rep strokes his back in reassurance - I’ve noticed her do that before to help reassure him.

Even when he’s clearly more confident these days, there’s still something quite endearing about the fact that underneath the outfit and the interviews and the growing success, he never really gives off the impression that he’s bought into his own hype. It still feels like you’re watching a guy who’s genuinely thrilled to be doing a job he loves.

The day he starts gliding down a carpet like he’s God’s gift to acting, I’ll start worrying. Until then, the nervous little fidgets can stay.

Not convinced on the hair, but it matched the suit.

I’m starting to think she just likes the drama, and I imagine her liking and unliking for the laughs. Like "these fucking losers are going to freak out again". I don’t think E has anything to do with it, whether they’re together or not.

I almost hope that’s not the explanation.

Because if the answer is genuinely that she knows exactly how people react and finds it funny, that’s probably the least flattering interpretation of all.

At least things like insecurity, conflict, loneliness or wanting reassurance are recognisably human. Deliberately winding people up for your own entertainment is a different thing entirely.

If that really is the motivation, I think it says far more about the person doing it than it does about the people reacting to it and none of what it says is particularly flattering.

If they have broken up, I can absolutely see a scenario where the likes aren’t really about the post at all, but about squeezing one last drop of relevance, connection or control out of a situation that’s otherwise moved beyond you. The awkward part is that even negative attention can scratch that itch for a few minutes, which is why people sometimes keep repeating behaviours that clearly aren’t bringing them any peace.

Obviously we aren't sure if E is aware of it. But if it was me, I would be questioning why it's happening.

It's just adding fuel to the fire, perhaps the best advice she could be given is maybe take a break from social media and concentrate of whatever it is that's going on..

If I was her friend, I would be having firm but gentle words.

I don’t think I’d tell her to stop liking posts. I don’t think I’d tell her to stop seeking attention. I think I’d probably sit her down, hand her a cup of tea (or a double vodka) and ask:

“Babes, is this making your life better?”

Because whatever is driving the like-unlike cycle, it doesn’t exactly scream inner peace.

If you’re with him, it doesn’t look like comfort and security.

If you’re not with him, it doesn’t look like closure.

If you’re trying to make a point, it doesn’t look like it’s landing. It just looks exhausting emotionally.

You don’t have to do any of this. Instagram is not a mandatory workplace task. There is no government official standing over your shoulder demanding you like a photo of a man.

You don’t have to like the post.

You don’t have to unlike the post.

You don’t have to spend your evening playing emotional ping-pong with a little heart-shaped button.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is absolutely nothing.

Leave the post alone.

Leave the phone alone.

Go outside and look at a tree.

Easier said than done, I know.

whatever the explanation is here the repeated pattern doesn’t strike me as someone who’s at peace with the situation. It strikes me as someone scratching the same itch over and over again and then wondering why it’s still itchy.

F is at it again liking/unliking posts. At this point is obviously an attention seeking issue.

The like was never the interesting part. The unlike is the part that raises questions because it suggests awareness of the reaction. Repeating the pattern over and over again doesn’t really answer anything, it just reinforces that there’s clearly something going on behind the behaviour that we as outsiders don’t have enough information to understand.

Whether that’s stubbornness, wanting a sense of control, pushing back against perceived restrictions, sending a message to someone, or something else entirely, who knows. Nobody needs to like an Instagram post. The action itself is entirely optional, which is why the repeated like-unlike pattern feels like a symptom of something bigger rather than the thing itself.

More than anything, I just find it a bit sad. Whatever is driving it, it doesn’t strike me as the behaviour of someone who’s completely comfortable with the situation.
