Nonchalant (Draco Malfoy)
Harry Potter isn’t the only student at Hogwarts who survived at the hands of Voldemort, his version of justice is on the horizon, you can all tell.
The war was coming. Everyone could feel it, it was obvious how the world around them seemed to be surrounded by darkness, the usual wonders of Hogwarts in hiding. The sun didn’t beam down on them anymore, their breath visible to anyone nearby, the cold nipping at their skin. He was back, he was back for the duo who lived, the two who destroyed his life, and he didn’t care who he took down on his way to destroy you and Potter.
Harry and Alice potter, the only wizards to ever survive an attack from Voldemort himself. Despite being twins, Alice and Harry were sorted into different houses, Harry being in Gryffindor and the other being placed into Slytherin. It never made sense to other students why the twins were sorted into opposite houses, but I suppose it was down to how they both dealt with the loss of their parents and the family they were placed into. Harry was always submissive, he took the bullying from the Dursley family, but Alice never did, she’d shout, she’d throw things, she’d get mad, but mainly when they hurt Harry but when they hurt you, Harry did nothing. He was always defenceless, he was always the one who let shit happen, but she never did, she wasn’t going to let people like that, hurt her and your brother.
Everyone knew the story, or at least the version they wanted to believe. Harry, he became a celebrity, known as the “Boy Who Lived”, but people seemed to ignore the fact that he wasn’t alone in that nursery that night, he wasn’t alone in the destruction of Voldemort that night, it wasn’t the power of just one boy, it was the power of them both, the power of the Potter twins. Alice wasn’t exactly bothered that people left her out the story, she wasn’t the type of person who enjoyed the attention, it caused too much hurt to be constantly reminded of that night when people would ask, “What happened?” “How did he kill them?” “What spell did he use?” etc. They don’t care about how it makes them feel, they don’t care if it brings her pain to think about, they just want to know as much as they can about the celebrities of Hogwarts, they just want to know the details to pass on as a bedtime story for children to come, the story of the first survivors
There was one who never asked her for the details though, and being the git he is, it surprised her when he never asked, he never wanted to know what happened that night. Alice assumed it was because he didn’t care, why would he? He’s Draco Malfoy for crying out loud, he doesn’t need to give anyone the time of day to even say hello as he walked by, never mind showing any form of interest towards her, even if they were in the same house. But she soon learned it was quite the opposite, he never asked her because he could tell how much it hurt the girl when someone asked Harry or Alice. He could see in her eyes how much it hurt to feel like the forgotten sibling, the one who everyone assumes isn’t hurting as much as her brother, the one everyone thinks as below the boy who defeated Voldermort. He knew there was more to the story, and of course he wanted to know, but not because he cared about the gossip, but because he wanted to let her have the voice she wanted, just for someone to listen to her and tell her it was all okay. He couldn’t help but feel drawn to the slythering girl, he didn’t know what it was about her that he found so captivating, but every time he looked at her all he could do was smile, the boy was a softie for Alice Potter. He knew from the moment he looked at her brown eyes, that he wanted her, he didn’t care how she was part of his life, he just needed her to be part of it.
As time went on the pair grew closer to one another, the first few years being nothing but a friendship, even when they both secretly craved more, until their 4th year when they finally gave in to the temptations they both had been pushing away for the past 3 years. It was the first celebration of the season for quidditch, Slytherin taking the first win, being the rebels of the school, of course they all had to celebrate, a party was the only way to do so. After a night of firewhisky and shots, the night came to a sudden end when Snape stormed in and shut everything down. Draco and Alice both started running through the halls hand in hand, both laughing the whole way, letting their feet guide the way, not putting much thought into where it would lead the pair. When they both stopped running, catching their breath, she realised they had both ended up in the astronomy tower, both Alice and Draco’s favourite place in the entire castle. They both often caught one another here alone, thinking looking up at the stars, it wasn’t a place they often came together. She sat down at the edge of the tower by the rails, feet dangling as she looked over the view from the height they were at, her breathing calming back down. Draco stood for a while, staring down at her with a smile on his face, all he could think about was how beautiful his best friend was, how she made his breath jumpy and his heart race. He knew that he loved her, he loved her more than anything, but he knew he couldn’t love Alice the way she deserved, he knew that sooner or later he’d have to break her heart, and he would never forgive himself for doing so.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Like I’m the first woman you’ve ever seen”
“You’re the only woman I notice darling.”
She looked away from him, blushing furiously, butterflies having a party in her stomach. He eventually sat down next to her, grabbing her hand and intertwining their fingers, looking out at the view together. Placing her head on his shoulder, like it was the most natural thing in the world, she smiled, her heart warm. Looking up at him from her position, she couldn’t help but think that he was the most gorgeous man in the world, and she knew she could never feel the way she does about him towards anyone else. His chest vibrated with a chuckle, as she looked up at him with confusion and a furrowed eyebrow, he eventually spoke.
“I think you’re gorgeous too Alice, I couldn’t feel this way about anyone else either.”
It was then that she realised she had spoken out loud, the curse and blessing of firewhisky.
They both leaned in, but before their lips could touch, someone started walking up the stairs...
