CODOC//VIDEO OF THE WEEK: BOUNCING CATS
Filming in Uganda last year for our forthcoming documentary on Northern Uganda left us with the indelible spirit of the people who have gone through hell and back and survived to tell the tale. Media lenses seem determined to frame these people as victims and with decades of murder, mutilation, rape and dislocation - it's an easy thing to do. Never however have we met people with such dignity, grace and capacity for life.
Bouncing cats is an upcoming doc from Nabil Elderkin the man behind many a Kanye West video. It's got a wit and style to it that CODOC likes.
Here's the blurb:
Bouncing Cats is the inspiring story of one man’s attempt to create a better life for the children of Uganda using the unlikely tool of hip-hop with a focus on b-boy culture and breakdance. In 2006, Abraham “Abramz” Tekya, a Ugandan b-boy and A.I.D.S. orphan created Breakdance Project Uganda (B.P.U.). The dream was to establish a free workshop that would empower, rehabilitate and heal the community by teaching youth about b-boy culture. Based in Kampala, Uganda, B.P.U. has recently expanded to include permanent classes in Gulu, Northern Uganda. Abramz teaches classes three times a week to more than 300 kids from all parts of the country. Many of the children are homeless, victims of war and poverty, and few can afford proper schooling yet they walk from miles away to attend the B.P.U. classes. As Abramz says, “This is where many people’s pride is. It’s a skill that no one can take away from us.” Crazy Legs, one of the founding members of the seminal Rock Steady Crew visited Uganda after receiving an invitation from Abramz to teach b-boy classes. What he discovered upon his arrival was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Traveling throughout Uganda, from the southern slums to the war-torn North, Crazy Legs encountered a passion for hip-hop and desire to learn amongst the most squalid conditions. Bouncing Cats follows Abramz, Crazy Legs, and Breakdance Project Uganda on a journey to use hip-hop culture for positive social change. The film features narration by Common and interviews with Mos Def, Will-I-Am, and K’Naan.
Share the word and spread the message. Follow our pages online as well our friends at Resolution:Possible to keep up to date with current affairs in Uganda.

Great track but does the video live up to the wattage? The new Kanye/Hype Williams video for 'ALL OF THE LIGHTS'
Vaughn Smith has been mentioned a lot recently because of his support for Julian Assange - and a lot has been said about the Frontline Club (of which Smith is the founder) because of that. What is the Frontline Club doing backing someone so divisive within the journalism industry? And what does that signify for where journalism and digital media is headed? Well - case in point:
The above report is his latest from the frontlines of Afghanistan. What we admire about the piece - and it's reflective of most of his reports - is the honesty in which he frames his subjects. No angle - no agenda these are just good guys doing their job in extreme circumstances. Journalist @psmith who just did a write up of it here. He says:
"...if one man and one camera can do this, that says something quite exciting about what else is possible in video journalism doesn’t it?"
We Concur.
A big shout out to all the Codoc Advocates

This looks interesting and seems to ask a number of very important questions about what our creative culture is evolving into given the convergence of digital media and creativity. PressPausePlay will be debuting at the South By Southwest Festival in March.
Directors David Dworsky and Victor Kohler:
"Over the last decade creativity and talent of hundreds of millions of people have been unleashed in an unprecedented way, forever changing human culture. Our film is a humble contribution to the debate," says Charlotta Ribbefjord of the Swedish team behind the film. "PressPausePlay is a documentary film about hope, fear, and digital culture based on interviews with some of the world's most influential creators of the digital era such as Moby, Robyn, Sean Parker and Seth Godin, among others."
What do you all think? Is the future of creativity destined for further mediocrity or are we entering a digital renaissance?

Launch!
The day has finally arrived - Codoc is here! Today we open up the Codoc Concept to the masses inviting you to engage in a different kind of discourse. Both online and offline. All the online spaces that we've created are there to help communicate broad social concerns, to tell you a story and invite you tell us yours. We will also host a number of events to translate online debate to real-world discussion. These will range from screenings, talks to workshops and meet-ups.
The Codoc Manifesto
This blog is our main hub for updates on events and stories. Regular posts and video blogs will be posted throughout the week that highlight stories, events, people and projects that we believe in. You can find us on all the regular social networking channels where we generate commentary around relevant topics.
Join The Debate
Our facebook pages are the quickest way to get in touch and to keep up to date with latest developments. Our two activity hubs center around our documentaries The Truth That Wasn't There and Forgive Me Mother.
The Truth That Wasn't There focuses on three student journalists (including both of us!) and their experiences traveling up to north eastern Sri Lanka after the end of civil war. We will regularly post up a video blog while we do the rounds with the film giving you previews of forthcoming events and letting you know the kind of responses we've had for the film and the discussion it generates.
Forgive Me Mother film is at its heart an emotional testament of the young people of Uganda who have been forced to bear the burden of -both victim and perpetrator in a conflict where 30,000 children between the ages of 8-15 have been abducted by a rebel group calling themselves the Lords Resistance Army.
Connect The Dots
Running between our two documentaries is our official CODOC Facebook Page where there will be constant updates, video blogs and commentary. This is where CODOC invites you to share your opinion, perspective and story.
We are planning on a number of events in 2011 that will concentrate all this online chatter into meaningful connections and perhaps even collaborations.
So stay tuned and I hope you enjoy the ride!
