Something about Abed saying “it’s embarrassing” in Geothermal Escapism when he tells Troy he’s seeing real lava really gets to me. Because like, up to this point we have never once seen Abed be embarrassed or ashamed about who he is and how he interacts with the world around him. I’m sure he’s felt shame before, but we never see it because we only see him when he’s with the group, and they’re the people who accept him the most.

So when he admits to Troy that he’s embarrassed, it’s honestly jarring. Danny Pudi is so impressive for that scene because you can literally pinpoint the exact instant the whole facade disappears, and it’s just Abed. His first and only best friend and love of his life is leaving him and he can’t cope with it to the point that he’s seeing actual lava everywhere, and he’s embarrassed.

Idk this scene just really sticks out to me because it’s the most vulnerable we ever see Abed in the entire show. Most of the time we only ever see him as the magical elf-like man who uses movies and TV to connect to the world, and he is that. But he’s also a human being, and human beings can’t be magical and elf-like all the time. Some people perceive Abed as an emotionless robot, when in reality he has very strong emotions but is just very good at controling them. This is one of the few times where we see that control slip away.
