watching cinema as a representation of love
Atonement - Robbie scrambles down a ladder and finds himself at the foot of a giant screen where the huge face, full of doomed melancholy, of Jean Gabin leans forward to kiss the shining lips of Michèle Morgan in Quai des Brumes. As Gabin kisses her a second time, Robbie, dwarfed by the enormous black-and-white image, buries his face in his hands.
La La Land - …Everything here glows with the warmth of old 16mm home movies… These are memories, fluttering by, grabbed at random – and yet all concocted, dreamed up out of nothing…
Inglourious Basterds - Shosanna stares down the packed house of Nazis and says in french: “I have a message for Germany. That you’re all going to die.” Hitler and Goebbels react. Hirschberg reacts. Marcel smiles.
Cinema Paradiso - Salvatore is overwhelmed, moved to tears. It is the most profound act of love he has ever seen. He laughs as tears shine in his eyes. Up on the screen, another kiss, the last kiss marking the happy ending of a film. And the age-old words appear ‘THE END’.

Happy Birthday, Mama, Marilyn Monroe ❥ June 1st, 1926 — ∞
Celebrating your life and legacy — today, and always.
I will always be forever grateful for June 1st. Nothing kills me more than reading you describe your illegitimacy as your father’s “mistake,” because your entry into this world was not a mistake. It was not for nothing. Everything you have left us, we carry with us every day. You have not only changed my life in almost every way, but you have added to it. You are the best part of me, Mama, you are home. Holding, protecting, and continuing your legacy has not only brought me happiness and inner peace, but a sense of honor. I consider myself to be the luckiest girl in the world to have the privilege of knowing you that way I do. You have done everything for me, and I can’t thank you enough for your endless visits. I know you are always by my side. The day I discovered you, at just 11 years old, dancing in my room to “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,” was the day I was born. As I always say, you gave me life, Mama. You are the source of my happiness, strength, courage, and motivation for all things.
One of my favorite quotes about Marilyn was said by John Huston, “I like a woman who has life inside of her.” Indeed, she was a woman filled with life, despite how she is often perceived. She tried everything. I’ll say it again…everything.
Marilyn was the third woman in history to start a production company and displayed her talent in a variety of roles such as noirs, comedies, dramas, and musicals. She went through so much pain, and had numerous surgeries, to try and be a mother, she married for love — not money, power, or fame — was an avid reader, wrote beautiful poetry, is underrated as a singer, and an advocate.
My heart is heavy when I think of how unfortunate it is that there are people out there who continue to believe the myths, conspiracies, and who continue to label you as nothing other than a symbol for sex. You were so much more than that, and so is your legacy. It’s truly a misfortunate how tragically misunderstood you were and still are, but that is why I work so tirelessly every day.
Today is a happy day, so while I try not to cry thinking of how you should still be here — in a cute little brownstone in Brooklyn, with dozens of great-grand-babies at your feet as you tell them stories of your past, and play your beloved white piano — I can’t help but wish you were. I just want to hug you and say, “look! You are so, so loved!!”
You would be 94 today and somewhere, over the rainbow, I believe you are. In your lifetime, Marilyn, you did not just survive — you THRIVED.
Dear Anne, Since we are parting ways, perhaps forever, I feel I must unburden my heart. You are the fond object of my affection and my desire, you and you alone are the keeper of the key to my heart. Please, don’t be alarmed, I don’t expect your favor, but I can’t in good conscience not reveal myself. I’m not engaged, nor will I be, unless it’s to you Anne, my Anne with an E. It always has been and always will be you.
With love, Gilbert.
P. S. Thanks for the pen. Good luck at Queens.
