Choose Your Area Passionately, Not Just Because It Seems Right
Get a feel for how the work environment will be. What is the salary range? Stress level? Will that field have jobs upon your graduation? These are all things you should consider when choosing an area of business, among other things. This sounds simple, but many students choose their major without truly doing this, and then they end up wasting time and money in college. I once met a student who was majoring in astronomy, however, he initially majored in finance. The reason he switched to astronomy has slipped my mind, but the reason he left finance was because “sitting at a desk” just wasn’t for him. Had he truly thought about the environment of finance and researched the different finance careers, he could have saved himself a lot of time and money in an area that he wasn’t passionate about.
Make Friends, Get Out of Your Comfort Zone!
This really is important and will truly benefit you throughout your time in university. I was not the most social in high school or at my community college, but upon transferring to my university for finance, I really have been trying to make friends and network. My efforts have been successful and I have met a lot of great people. Making one friend can honestly lead to a big network of friends, and then soon enough you’re meeting friends of friends of friends and so on, just because you went out of your way to make one connection.

Treat Every Class Seriously
This really could be advice for any major, but putting high effort in every class you take in college is very important. You’re taking each class for a reason. From the general education required at your school to the major requirements you will have to take, be serious about them all. The more knowledge you retain, and the more educated you become, the more respect you can get in your later courses and out there in the real world. When you start taking the courses required for your particular major, you should be studying like a maniac. Consider it like unofficial training for the job position you want. When you leave college, the idea is to get a job and you want to be able to tell your potential employers that you have what it takes. If you are taking out loans for school, that should be even more motivation for you to do your absolute best, so you can graduate with outstanding grades and get a high paying job that allows you to afford loan payments after graduation.
