While I'm a bit of a random and all, I thought I'd ask what you've been up to since the Doomhack so many years ago? Well, if you regret making that today or if that was fun even after all that time. ^_^; Perhaps maybe "what gave you the idea to put all those ideas together into that mishmash of hilarity?"

No shame in asking! I haven't really been up to much in recent years, as far as creative endeavors go. These days, I've got to focus on keeping a roof over our heads, so I don't have much time or motivation for fun projects. Once in a while I'll whip up a sprite or two, and I've always wanted to make a platformer of some kind, but free time's just not as common as it was when I was putting together my Doomhack. I actually started working on it around 2003, when I was finishing up high school. The fact that Doom is so easy to modify made it fun to gradually tweak, implementing whatever goofy bullshit I found funny at the time, and eventually it became my big train set in the basement - as years went by, I'd keep adding bits here and there, trying to squeeze as much as I could out of the engine with the tools and knowledge I had. Making it was a blast, I learned a few things in the process, and I even ended up making some friends along the way because of it. Sometimes I'll even meet people in other games who will ask "are you the same craftytitan who made the doom hack?" and that just warms my heart, seeing that other people got so much enjoyment out of something totally silly I made purely for my own amusement - that's why it never had a name beyond "Doomhack". The default filename assigned by DeHackEd was "DOOMHACK.EXE" and I never bothered giving it a name because it was never intended to be seen by anyone other than me and my IRL circle of friends. And while I don't outright regret anything about the experience, that does lead into the one thing I would have done differently, which is making Doomhack more portable, so it would play nicer with source ports and other mods and wouldn't be limited to its own little sandbox. Doomhack's full of so much spaghetti code and jury-rigged implementation, because I never expected it to see the wild frontier of the internet, that it's essentially grafted onto the core Doom files with all the grace of a WWII field surgeon and making Doomhack as it is now into a non-standalone version would be a Sisyphean task. I'd probably have to rebuild it myself from the ground up, and something's bound to be lost in translation trying to make sense of a work that's fifteen years old. But, I still like to think about what makes Doom tick, and I've been toying with some ways to make some of the tricks I pulled work in modern Doom modding formats, so who knows? Maybe I'll have to blow the dust off that project sometime.
