It seems that there are two schools of thought these strange days, those that want to go back to the way things were and those who want to adapt to the new normal. What if there was a third, independent school of thought that posed the question, “How can we do things better?” Tomorrow, Italians will be allowed to venture out into their cities with little or no restrictions other than a mask, but really only if inside, and social distancing, when possible. Don’t forget that in Italy, every question is met with the same answer: “That depends…” There is nothing “new” and everything “normal” about tomorrow. Italians, more than any other population, suffer from acute nostalgia and they are reminiscing about the days before the pandemic, eager to use their return to freedom to pick up exactly where they left off – the last few months of lockdown completely wiped from their collective memory. It’s a shame really. We will hopefully never again enjoy these rare moments of solitude. Just me and the city. I do want to hear the humdrum that assures me the city is indeed alive, and yet. The respectful silence of the empty streets and the stunning beauty of an empty city, it’s monuments suddenly laid bare and picture perfect. Unmolested by its jaded inhabitants and the hordes of tchotchke hunting tourists.
