Can you imagine a world without lions? For World Lion Day, let’s take a moment to appreciate these majestic but vulnerable animals. Over the last century, lions have disappeared from more than 80 percent of their historic range. Some populations, like the Barbary lion (Panthera leo leo), have been eradicated completely. The last photograph of a wild Barbary lion was snapped in 1925.

Those that remain are under threat from human encroachment, poaching, trophy hunting, and more. The disappearance of lions would have major implications for their ecosystems: These apex predators hunt weak or sick animals, keeping ungulate populations healthy and helping to maintain the conditions of the grasslands and forests where they live.
