I started this story in 2021 and have now finished it! I had an amazing time writing this and hope the Darklina fandom will enjoy it in its completed form.

Alina opens her eyes, the half-eaten apple falling from her hand. She watches as it rolls away, the golden flesh turning grey from ash and dirt, until it is stopped by a black boot.

Alina looks up, finding The Darkling - Sasha, Aleksander, her lover, her hunter, her guardian, angel and devil - standing at the entrance to the square. She cannot help but look at his wings and admire them in a new light, knowing how ruined they had once been, how she had mourned plucking each tarnished feather and fretted they would never grow back.

“I’m sorry,” The Darkling whispers. “That I wasn’t able to protect you then. I was weak.”

“It doesn’t change anything,” Alina says quietly. “You destroyed Os Atla. You killed people. You want to bring about a war that will destroy this world.”

“What I do, I do to protect those I care for. The Heavens banished my demons to the darkness and hunted them down like animals. I will not stand idle by and wait for them to eradicate us.” The Darkling takes a step closer. “In the garden, I failed to protect you and because of that, you were taken from me. I couldn’t even remember your face… your voice… your touch, so long we had been apart. Any attempt to capture even a fraction of your image The Heavens stole from me. I will not apologise for the lengths I go to ensure your safety. To ensure you stay by my side.”

“You must be Alina,” The Darkling manages to whisper, his voice strained. Sweat trickles down his forehead. His face contorts in pain with every breath. “The Sun Summoner.” Seeing her surprise, he manages to smirk, “Your creation has long been a point of discussion within The Heavens, do not look too surprised.” Curiosity narrows his eyes. “I take it you do not know who I am?”

“I know who you are,” Alina murmurs. “You’re The Black Heretic.”

“Yet you help me still?” The Darkling quirks a brow. “Is this stupidity or pity?”

“Neither,” Alina grits out. She is surprised when she can snatch her wrist from his grasp; he is weaker than she thought, his strength still drained from his injuries. “It’s called compassion.”

“Compassion?” The Darkling scoffs.

“Do not mock it. Compassion is the only reason you are not still imprisoned in that tree. It’s the only reason you’re not in more pain than you are now.”

Their eyes met—across the ache of a wide and gaping hole in her heart, across the tumultuous waves of a blue and boundless sea, and across a vast and empty sky full of cloud and shade, all things lying in between them—and in the center, for only a moment, the two came together as one.

“Is that why you no longer wear your ring?” Halbrand asked her so gently, the pad of his thumb a bare press along her jaw. “Do you fear me so much?”

Chapter 9 Snippet:

"What do you want, Darkling?" "Darkling now, is it?" He says softly, dangerously. "Would you rather I say your other name?" Alina challenges, quiet enough only for him to hear.  He smirks, amused by her boldness. But there is a darkness in his eyes now, directed at her. A fury that simmers below the surface. Her last use of his name has not been forgotten or forgiven.  "You cut our last conversation off so abruptly, my love," Aleksander clicks his tongue in a chiding manner. Alina tries not to wince at the endearment, already feeling the burning judgment of those close by. "I would like to finish it. Without prying eyes and listening ears." Alina shakes her head. "You won't let me go if I step outside the cathedral." "I won't let you go if I have to drag you out after my Nichevo'ya destroy the cathedral either," The Darkling muses. Alina thinks of the last time he tried to prevent her from leaving. How with six words she had brought him to his knees. She isn't foolish enough to think she can stop him alone with her powers, not untrained as she was. But that was not her only weapon.  I'm not powerless, Alina thinks, steeling herself. Not with the knowledge I have.

Hi! So I'm looking for a Darkling modern au where Aleksander is a tortured artist. They have this really complicated and toxic on and off thing and he dates Genya who is an old money fashion (I think) student and part of the fic is in her POV. She starts turning herself into an artist and changes her clothes and tastes to fit with Aleksander's and I think she figures out about Aleksander's emotional infidelity. And that's all I can remember. Hope you can help me find this fic and thank you!
