Katzbalger Sword

Dated: 19th Century

Culture: German

Measurements: steel, woord, leather

Measurements: overall length 88.5 cm

The sword has a straight, double-edged blade with triple, central groove, stamped with four crescents. The iron hilt is chiselled and engraved and features the typical “S”-shaped quillon of the Katzbalger, a fine turban-shaped pommel with deep, twisted grooves and wooden grip with leather covering.

It was only partially of her own volition that Estella was tucked away by herself. The shyness played a very large part, true, but the more seasoned ladies of the court had done more than a bit of shunning. This green little waif in her handmade gown and simple mask, without so much as a plume in her hair. Did she really think she was worthy of treading the same floor?

If ever Estella entertained the notion, someone was quick to disabuse her of it. Fortunately, the punchbowl had made very agreeable company.

She peeked at him from behind her mask and nodded.

"Of course, help yourself." Then her mouth curved with that sweet little smile. "Do my eyes deceive me, or is it my lord Fandral?"

"You have my thanks," Fandral said, just as he took his seat. His own mouth curved into that of a smirk as she smiled. He leaned his elbows on the table and kept his eyes on her as he spoke. "Please forgive my lack of dress for the occasion. I come straight from training."

He heaved a sigh, but kept the smirk on his features. "Yes, it is I, Fandral the Dashing," he said almost wearily, doing his best impression of one of the many social climbers that surrounded them by lowering his voice and mimicking their somewhat stronger accent.

He had been raised in a similar habitat, and so he was used to such extravagance, but his parents had not been, fortunately. Their grounded upbringing allowed for an almost peaceful childhood for him. And although he enjoyed slipping into the elitist role every once and a while, it was not something he could bear to do every day.

He glanced behind him and observed the dancers and sweet talkers. "They are quite the sight to be seen, aren't they?" Fandral leaned his head in his hand and looked back to her. "Still, I find myself being much more pleased with this view."

The masked ball was in full swing. It had taken a week to properly set all the decorations, a month to make the costumes, and three days of nonstop activity in the kitchens to provide all the food. The room was a blaze of color, awash in delightful smells and filled with the sound of music and chatter and laughter.

Everyone seemed to be having a fine time with all their might, save for one girl. Dressed in pale blue, with a simple silk mask tied on with ribbons, she’d tucked herself into a corner by one of the tables and was doing her best to conceal her abundance of awkwardness with an abundance of punch.

Most of the warriors of Asgard attended all the parties and events that their vigorous and tiring schedule allowed them to, regardless of the theme. Masked balls, yule celebrations, and even assorted showers -- there was always a chance you could meet a warrior or two.

Fandral, however, had had one of the toughest training days he had encountered since his becoming a warrior. Because of this, he was tired and had not really had any interest in coming to the ball at all. But after a few persuasive words from his colleagues, he had made his way to the ballroom despite his weariness to do so.

Now seated in the chairs usually occupied by either the elderly or the rejected, Fandral was two heavy blinks away from falling asleep right then and there. But that was when he caught a glimpse of one of the many tables in the room, occupied by only one girl. It was Estella, he noticed after just a second, recognizing her despite only knowing her slightly.

He pondered on his next action, thinking that perhaps she was alone because she wanted to be, and he shouldn't disturb her, even though he wanted to. But one more glance at her sold his mind's case to his body, and he felt himself walking over to her. When he made it, he placed a hand on the back of the chair nearest to her.

"Could you spare a seat for one more?"

"If you think I will not fight you because of my size, you would be wrong. This is the only warning I will give you."

"I am in no need of a warning. I am not frightened of you nor of your people, regardless of your size."

"I just meant that after all this time, we’re finally meeting." she laughed lightly. "A walk sounds rather nice."

"I am most glad we meet at last, then," he said. Fandral offered his arm for her, preparing the route for their walk in his head. With a charming smile, he continued. "Perhaps you wish to see Asgard's gardens? Or are you more of the landmark sort?"
