“Alright. As long as God isn’t involved and there’s beer.” -thedemonbakeroffleetstreet :)
@thedemonbakeroffleetstreet sent from these Silicon Valley starters
He stared at his partner in crime in an attempt to determine if her words were sincere or sarcastic.
Both shops were closed for the night, and it was late. The streets could be seen through the windows, illuminated by candle light, and Todd had proposed a moonlit stroll once the streets cleared out more- so that he could sneak a glimpse into the judge’s mailbox.
Time on the barber’s hands was dangerous. His passion, thoughts, obsessions, all swirled around Judge Turpin, the man who he planned to kill. He’d been concerning himself with details, keeping himself aware of where the judge was during which hours of the day, and what his social circle resembled….
“Do you mean it?” Todd finally asked.
Mrs.Lovett leaned back against the counter as she stared at Sweeney’s stoic face, smirking when he asked if she was sure. Though this wasn’t really her ideal night out, it she was still pleasantly surprised at the barber’s proposal to actually go out. He could have easily spied on the judge himself, so why he asked her to go with him was beyond her comprehension, but she was delighted nonetheless.
“Sure, I mean it” She said with a small casual shrug. “Some fresh air would do you some good. It’s been a while since we took a proper walk. I just don’t want to listen to none of your philosophical rubbish, and as long as I can bring along something to drink...it sounds nice.”
She gave him a small smile as she went around the back and grabbed a mug for her beer, then glanced back at him with an expectant look.
“You want anything?”
Touch could be strange at times for the barber, as he still wasn’t quite accustomed to it in the context of his relationship with Mrs. Lovett, but at points it was much easier than discussing emotions, or arguing. And perhaps because he’d not grown too used to the physical contact, it remained …Interesting. Fresh. He wondered if she felt the same way about him, or if at times his lips against hers or his hand upon her leg were just simply expected.
“Yeah,” Todd sighed, as what they were arguing about previously, or even what she’d asked him were not the most clear thing on his mind.
He shifted closer to Nellie, to press his lips to hers once again, reminding her how empty each threat of him walking out truly was.
Mrs.Lovett swooned under the barber’s touch, closing her eyes and allowing herself to mold under his touch and melt wherever his fingers touched her body. She smiled against his lips when she heard the small “Yeah” leave his mouth. Finally, a surrender. An admittance that, despite their venomous games and falsely cruel pretenses, they would always share some sort of feeling for one another. Perhaps it wasn’t love just yet, but in due time, she knew she could bring him around.
“Come lay down with me,” She sighed, taking his hand and dragging him down the hall to her room. “I don’t care if you stay the night, I don’t care if we fuck, just...come and lay down for a minute.”
She walked backwards for a minute in order to give him another long but softer kiss.

Todd himself struggled to decide on if the answer he provided Mrs. Lovett with had true emotion behind it, or was just something to close the conversation on, but when he spoke there was something to it, even if the emotional weight behind it was not identical to what Mrs. Lovett desired.
Silly of him to believe that her difficult question would be the last one she offered him, for another emerged from her lips, with a sigh. She was near enough to where he could smell the bitterness of gin on her delicate breath.
He took a long look at her, drinking in the features she had, that he’d found something akin to comfort within during his new life.
Todd did not answer the question with words, but instead with a kiss. He abruptly leaned in, pressing his lips hard against Nellie’s.
Mrs.Lovett couldn’t tell if it was the room that was spinning, or her own weight that was swaying back and forth as she teetered on her feet, staring up at Sweeney with big eyes, hopeful that he would somehow see the love she held for him. Words were never her friend; she always seemed to talk too much, or say the opposite of what she meant in an anxious attempt to fill the silence. But for once, she managed to keep her mouth shut and just be present.
When she felt Sweeney’s lips on hers, she froze for a moment, so beside herself with stupefied amazement that her stupidly drunken mode of seduction had worked. She hummed happily against his lips and instinctually brought her hands up to wrap around his frame and hold him closer, feeling his cold damp body pressed against hers.
When they pulled back and gasped for air, she kept her arms around his neck and leaned in to press a gentle kiss to his jaw.
“I take it that’s a yes then?” She muttered against his skin.”
@demon-barber
Mrs.Lovett let out a small huff as she balanced the tray of food against her hip with one hand before opening the door to Mr.Todd’s barbershop with the other. She barged into the room, her eyes instinctually landing on the dark silhouette of the barber with his back towards her. Her heart leapt at the sight of him, but just like every other morning, she held her tongue and obediently set down the tray of food on the vanity table.
“Breakfast,” Her voice was demanding, but not too harsh, as she took a step closer. “Please tell me you’ll eat today, Mr.Todd. I’ve got a million things to worry about, I don’t need to worry about you keepin’ your strength up on top of everything else.”
As usual, her mouth went off before she had the sense to stop herself. “I’m heading to the market this afternoon, so if there’s anything you need, best tell me now...or, you could accompany me and save your breath instead of nagging me about getting the wrong things this time.”

“Read it. It will be for you to decide what it’s about. It could mean something different to both of us.” Adam replies as he sits down, his eyes moving to the curtain, watching as a few birds silently slipped past the moon in the blink of an eye only to be hidden by the night sky.
You make meat pies. I don’t see how that could be helpful for getting rid of a bo-” He pauses, realization on his face as he looks over to her, horror and disgust in his eyes. “You’ve been feeding them other human beings? Do you know what the hell you’re doing?! You’re creating bacterias, viruses, sickness! And the blood…If they’ve all been eating your human flesh pies they’re too dangerous to drink from.” Looking at Mrs. Lovett, he sees her in a new light. She had looked like nothing but a simple lonely woman, not anyone who could cause harm to anyone besides the roaches that infested her disgusting little shop, but now…Now there was something about her that looked evil, devilish even.
“What the fuck were you thinking feeding people-OTHER PEOPLE!? This is…I feel sick.” Placing a hand over his face, he bites his lower lip and tries to calm down. “When we drink human blood, we don’t… It’s different. We have no choice. But we’re…Our bodies are different from yours. Your living organisms. You BREED disease. Cannibalism… Fuck.”
Mrs.Lovett’s eyes widened at the severity of Adam’s reaction, raising a brow as she listened to him rant and rave and cuss. He went on for quite a long while, and though she tried to interject a few times by mumbling things like “Calm down, dear,” or “What the hell else was I supposed to do with the bodies?” he clearly wasn’t listening. She was genuinely surprised by his reaction (and that fact that he hadn’t realized sooner), and though she found some of his over the top exclamations to be comical, she was left speechless by the time he finished.
She gave a small shrug when he looked at her, not exactly knowing what to do. For the first time in a very long while, she was...vulnerable. She loved Adam as a friend, but knew that he wouldn’t have any problem turning her in to the authorities, which meant she really had no choice now but to explain herself in hopes that he would understand her motives a bit better.
“Adam...darling, I need you to calm down,” She said firstly, taking a step closer so that she could properly look in his eyes. It hurt to see the new way he looked at her, as if she were a monster, and she had to take a moment to remind herself that it was the exact opposite, in fact; he was the monster.
“Mr.Todd has...a nasty temper. We were in a predicament, so I improvised, and...well, it turned out to be a rather efficient business measure. It was the practical thing to do, y’see. And not everyone in London eats at my shop, Good lord, don’t be so dramatic, there are plenty of people to drink from. It’s survival of the fittest, Adam, you know that. I’m surviving.”
“Yes, it would.” Adam snarls as he picks up the case to save his guitar from the woman’s assaults. “Do you know how much I paid for this guitar? Whey the hell are you kicking my instruments. I don’t go around kicking your things, do I?” checking the instrument, he whispers its name, Vittoria, before taking it out of the case to check for any damage. “You’d never be able to afford it if you damaged it.”
Mrs.Lovett bit her lip and took a step back at Adam’s severe reaction to her kicking his guitar. She didn’t even expect anything to be in the case, but now he was snapping at her, and she couldn’t do anything but stare at him with her arms stiffly crossed over her chest.
“You’re in an awful mood, I wanted to snap you out of it. Suppose I did the opposite, though.”
When he mentioned her not being able to afford a replacement if she damaged it, her face screwed into a small scowl. That felt low, even for him. Even if she were penniless, Mrs.Lovett was a proud woman, and did her best to act as posh as possible, so that comment about her financial standing dug deep, whether it was intended to or not.
“You and your goddamn instruments,” she sighed. “You can’t hoard them forever.”
“ Haven’t been here in years. People think it’s haunted. ” -thedemonbakeroffleetstreet :)
“Haunted? Why the bloody hell would they think that?”
“Because you never go out, you always keep the curtains drawn, and the place is a bloody mess!” Mrs.Lovett scolded, lightly kicking one of the guitar cases at her feet. “Would it kill you to tidy up once every decade or so?”
Todd didn’t fight back when Nellie snatched the bottle from his hand, but instead allowed her the tiny victory, although he craved more. More liquor to soothe him, ease the tension that pumped through his narrow body, to perhaps prevent him from tossing any comments with Mrs. Lovett with edges too pointy.
He stared at his landlady’s lips as her words echoed through his head once again.
Was… Was he happy there?
Living with Mrs. Lovett at 186 Fleet Street was never something he dreamed of, and was not the ideal situation for him. No, the ideal situation would be with Lucy and Johanna, but that was not a reality he could reach. It was impossible. Chimerical.
Of course living alongside Nellie in the same city as the judge, with obtainable revenge wasn’t horrible. Another benefit being the aspect of not being locked away in prison.
And so he offered a reluctant nod.
“Yes,” he sighed, reaching across the baker for the glass bottle, “I am.”
Whatever answer Mrs.Lovett was expecting, that wasn’t it. She gave him a long hard stare after he pried the bottle away once more, unable to tell whether he was saying it just to end the conversation and keep from fighting, or he was genuinely happy living here with her. Though she had gotten rather good at reading the extremely subdued emotions he tried to keep hidden, and knew he was quite content with his life on Fleet Street, she never expected him to actually admit it.
“Good. That’s good,” She breathed.
Perhaps it was the gin that was now clouding her judgment, but tonight she felt like pushing her luck. After all, Mr.Todd was practically trapped- with no dry clothes, he couldn’t exactly run out and up to his shop in his underwear. So she took a step closer and looked up at him with raised eyebrows.
“Do I make you happy?”
Finally, the inevitable question, only brought to her lips by an over indulgence in alcohol and the odd dissociative feeling that none of this would matter in the morning. Their night was already so damn weird, why the hell should it stop now?
He told Mrs. Lovett she had the opportunity to toss him out, but his words didn’t hold much weight, as they were a wager of luck. Losing Nellie would be fatal to his plan to kill the judge, and with the information that she held, she’d be the greatest liability. The only way he could leave her was with blood pouring out of an ample gash on the baker’s delicate neck.
A thought processes built on the staples of business and revenge, precisely the ones that his never-ending obsession circled, which had brought him to this argument with Mrs. Lovett in the first place.
Perhaps he had set it up, but because of Todd’s lack of social awareness, he didn’t expect a confession of love to emerge from this moment- and yet, it happened nonetheless.
To ease the tension, the barber got to his feet and shuffled over to Nellie, where he snatched up the bottle of gin and stole a swig directly from the glass mouth of the bottle.
He nodded, agreeing with the baker, but not in the way that she intended. There was nothing else in the world for him. He belonged on Fleet Street, because it was crucial to his plan.
“Good, ‘cause I’d rather be here,” He mumbled to his partner.
Mrs.Lovett frowned as Sweeney stole her gin, watching him with a slight scowl as he nodded. She could still feel her heart racing from her earlier confession, but as soon as Mr.Todd spoke, she knew he wasn’t truly addressing the matter at hand. Though his words were slightly encouraging, the baker still felt defeated by their conversation. She had admitted her affection for him dozens of times- though not always verbally- but each time he coldly ignored her confessions, her heart broke just a little bit more.
She got to her feet and snagged the gin bottle back, taking a sip before letting out a hissed breath and clutching it to her chest.
“Are you happy here?” She asked suddenly, looking him in the eyes as she began to sway due to the alcohol in her system.
The Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, Arthur Edmund Grimshaw, 1895
Todd clutched the edge of the blanket over his bare chest, not wanting to distract from the tense discussion at hand with a glimpse of his skin.
Mrs. Lovett’s words did impact him, although he held the damage that was done inside, not to be shown. He’d heard much worse in his years, but it caught him off guard to hear that Nellie viewed him so lowly.
His self awareness was high enough to agree with the fact that he was not the ideal conversation partner, but the comments implying his position to Mrs. Lovett as a burden- that struck a nerve. -And why oughtn’t it? She doubted him from the day he arrived back in London, did she not?
The barber considered standing up to grab a drink, as it was what he craved to dull the anxiety that brewed with vulnerability, but gin wasn’t worth physically approaching Mrs. Lovett in this state- yet, anyways.
“If I make you this miserable, why haven’t you thrown me out? I’ve got the money now, I can live,” He pushed her again, bluffing this time.
Mrs.Lovett could tell Sweeney was upset with her, but she wasn’t surprised in the least. She was surprised, however, when he actually replied with a question of his own instead of stomping off like she expected him to. His question was a tricky one, though. He knew the answer, did he not? He knew she loved him, didn’t he? He had to know, how could he not? But then why the hell was he asking? Surely he didn’t want an admission of love- not after all she just said, and especially not while he was sitting in her living room half naked and nearly frozen. Dear Lord, this was not how she had anticipated the evening to turn out.
As her head began to hurt, she realized she was furrowing her brow too hard. She finished off her gin, then took a while longer to collect her thoughts before answering.
“You make me miserable because I love you, and you’re a coldhearted bastard who will never feel anything for me. I won’t throw you out because, well, I love you.” Her face was stern as she concentrated on articulating each word as best she could.
“Besides...you’re an idiot if you think there’s anything else in this world for you besides what we’ve got going here. You belong here.”
She was clearly offended, even someone as blind as Todd could see that. Even more so, he could feel it, as the warmth from her presence against him had subsided when she got up to grab a drink.
In one sense he missed her touch, but in the other it angered him that an armchair was more appealing than him, as if his touch, his presence was a gift in itself to Mrs. Lovett, which only magnified the icy sting of her rejection.
“If it happens again, you are welcome to leave me,” the barber responded coldly, scratching one of his sideburns with his index finger, testing her.
She was hardly expecting a response, but when she got one, it pushed her over the point of anger and into a cold state of...well, whatever it was Mr.Todd must’ve felt all the time.
“Oh, Mr.Todd,” She sighed, shaking her head as she leaned forward to rest her elbows on her knees.
“You’ve no idea, do you? Do you think I wanted to carry you inside and fuss over you? Do you think I like sitting here talking to a brick wall all night? Do you think it makes me happy, these interactions with you? Because it doesn’t. I’d leave you if I could, but I can’t. It’s killing me, you know that, don’t you? You sit there, and I pretend that you...I don’t know, care or something, but you don’t. You’re a million miles away, and I’m just...stuck here.”
She lifted the glass of gin to her lips with a shaky hand, then tucked a strand of hair behind her ear with a sigh.
“And now I’ve gone and made a fool of myself, talking such nonsense.” She muttered beneath her breath.
