THE LEGENDS OF CHRISTMAS Here’s to the unlucky ones The downtrodden. The few whose lungs are black from too many cigarettes Bellies bruised from too much bad booze. The ones who’ve given their love to the weak The undeserving The dead-hearted The people who poor themselves into tiny cups And give their time to those who don’t see it Who don’t want it Who can’t feel it. And still don’t go away. If you can’t shut the door on the past If you can’t seem to turn the porch light out Or lock the door at night just in case they come home . . . stumbling in through the door if you can’t leave well enough alone set it aside turn it away then these words are for you: We are the angels that stand in the shadows. You see, what makes us tick cannot be counted in Seconds Or minutes Or dollars Or gold. We pay for what we own with bone and sinew and gut and time. And if you are one of us, if you feel yourself feeling out of sorts today. . . If you have no home No one to call your own Then Welcome. . . Neither do we. So meet us here at the curb. What we have can’t be bought or sold or wrapped up in brown paper packages. We have a story of sorrow written down throughout a lifetime of hope. If you are one of us Then get up from where you are Walk out of the place you’re at And Meet us here at the curb. We will save ourselves here together in the alley. Under the winter moons of Christmas past Among the memories of what could have been. We will take all of those promises broken And find glory in the unbearable sadness.
