i mean. yeah! it is a unhealthy relationship, and while i don't think it is toxic nowadays, it definitely was because their friendship was build around codependency.

thinking about their backgrounds, it's not hard to assume that they were each other's escape from the world. as graham was raised on a very strict family, he'd see damon and his family as a way to learn to express himself and well, graham was damon's only friend. so it all starts as this really powerful bond

but as time passes, things change. damon learns to literally adapt to survive while graham just can't help but be himself — they both nurture envy and disdain about this. fame directly impacts their relationship and both (at this time, mostly graham) start to grow resentful and it all leads to their divorce era.

i think the most unhealthy habit that they both have to this day is that they really don't know how to communicate to one another and, because of their bond, they both truly believe that the other can guess what he's feeling. lol. like that scene from normal people that connell goes, “of course i wanted to be with you, isn't that obvious?” and marianne goes “i don't find it obvious what you want”

and fact is THEY KNOWWW they can't talk, graham said it so many times, and damon kind of romanticizes it, by going “we communicate through our music” bitch get a grip 😭😭😭

to summarize it all, they have unhealthy habits and they're both unwilling to change it 😭
