goddamn right you should be scared of me who is in control?
❛ Well, good. That’s very reassuring. Hopefully it stays that way. ❜
Zero says this lightly, with a friendly lilt in his voice, but his gaze is still very blank and sharp as he peers at the other. He supposes this one can stay, since there’s nothing glaringly wrong with him and he appears to be human, but he will be keeping a close eye on him. He’s far too kind not to have something off about him, and Abra only befriends trouble.
❛ So, since I’m very clearly behind on things, how long have you guys, uh, known each other? ❜
“I can assure you the serial killer thing is not going to change,” Matt chuckles, but his smile softens slightly at Zero’s other question, reminiscing for a split second about his first introduction to Abra. He does remember her vaguely mentioning Zero; her husband-- but the subject had been changed quickly. He’s interested now to have a chance to learn more, if possible. “If I had to guess, a month or so? We had tea; she was very nice.” Matt hesitates, taking a moment to guage Zero’s demeanor; his heart rate and breathing-- all having remained steady apart from the initial shock of finding Matt sitting there at the start of their conversation. Finally, he asks, “How did you and Abra meet, if you don’t mind?”

First Meeting [closed]
Penny took in a ragged breath, straightening herself up completely and cringing a bit. “Of course I can walk.” She said, blowing out a long breath. “I’ve had worse than this, believe it or not.” She thought back to the showdown with the Lizard and managed to run her fingers through her hair. She’d start healing soon, but first she needed to actually get safe. “Let’s just go..”
“That’s not concerning at all,” Matt murmurs, but he steps on, keeping her pressed close if only for still fearing she may pass out before they get to his apartment. “Okay, though, if you’re sure. We’ll be there soon.”
He pauses, just focusing on getting her home as quick as possible, before asking, “You find yourself taking care of creeps like this often, then?”
First Meeting [closed]
“Penny Parker.” Penny said, giving him a weak smile as she tightened her grip around his neck. “I like that name, Daredevil.” It was exactly what you’d expect from a vigilante. It was simple, but it didn’t scream anything as crazy as Captain America. “Definitely like the costume.”
She hugged her coat around her a bit tighter before she managed to straighten herself up a bit against him. “Are we gonna get to where we’re going soon? I’m really starting to hurt.”
Another laugh as he tightens his hold around her again, nodding. “Glad to have the seal of approval, Penny,” he murmurs, before nodding, glancing a bit over her in worry despite being unable to really see any details. Her lagging heartbeat, however, is enough evidence for Matt to know they need to get there much more quickly. “Yeah, we’ll be there soon-- you think you can still walk? It’s just another block but I can carry you if you need.”
❛ Well, I — I mean, it’s nice to meet you, too. ❜
For the most part, Zero isn’t used to having pleasant introductions with other people, especially Abra’s friends. When he isn’t blackening his eyes and sharpening his teeth at them, it seems that he doesn’t really know what to do; he’s still waiting for the fatal flaw, the thing that should have him ready to kill this stranger. There has to be something. Nobody who comes around here is simply nice, not unless Liam had something to do with it.
❛ Abra didn’t tell me about you. I hope you’re not secretly a serial killer. ❜
That’s happened before. He is carefully watching the other’s reaction to the statement, just in case
“I see-- well then I don’t blame you at all for being a little suspicious and surprised,” Matt chuckles, his shoulders lifting in a light shrug. “But I’m not one, I promise.” That’s not to say he hasn’t worried himself that his own activities outside of upholding the law in the courtroom and enjoying tea with Abra weren’t all that good for her too. Though Matt was convinced about 99% of the time that what he did was good-- necessary, he had his moments of doubt. And though he pushed them aside, they came often. He’d yet to share this part of himself with Abra, and he wasn’t sure he ever would or could.
This is news to him. He doesn’t particularly like the fact that this is news to him; when Abra’s associates are kept from him, it’s usually because she’s trying to keep them hidden, and the reason she usually keeps them hidden tends to be because she should not be keeping their company.
Or she’s afraid he’ll kill them. Or something.
Zero eyes the hand blankly for a moment, as though attempting to discern whether or not this is some sort of trick, before hesitantly reaching out to take it.
❛ Matt. Hi. I’m Zero, but I guess you, uh, knew that. ❜
“Yeah-- but only because Abra’s told me about you. Not much, though.” Matt’s smile is genial, and he gives Zero’s hand a brief but friendly shake before he releases, moving to hold his cane lightly against his middle. “It’s nice to finally meet you.” He has been curious about him, admittedly. It’s not as if he doesn’t trust him, it’s just that Matt’s almost over-observant, whether he wants to be or not. And some of the ways Abra acts, or speaks, even upon the mention of this boy’s name, have been noted by him time and time again. There’s no immediate concern, at least not yet, but it’s there, shelved away to be referenced at a later point if needed. For now, it’s best to remain as civil as he can, and Matt’s good at that.
First, the puzzled and startled halt in his steps, staring toward someone he has never seen before in his home (and knowing his name, no less). Second, a suspicious alertness that takes over. Third, who the fuck wears sunglasses in doors? followed by noticing a cane, which brings on the slightly embarrassed fourth: oh, which makes him immediately — and perhaps carelessly — discredit the stranger as any sort of threat, though he stays alert and suspicious, as is his nature when someone he doesn’t know enters his territories. (And one does have to wonder how a blind man who has never met him before would be able to tell who he is.)
❛ That entirely depends on who you are. ❜
Matt had expected to be met with suspicion, and it’s coming off of Zero in waves, even all the way from the doorway of the room. He stands, purposely not moving nearer, but holding a hand out in greeting.
“I’m Matt,” he says, tilting his head a little toward Zero so as to hear him better, though he’s already able to just as well, and again, the tenseness in the other’s demeanor is not lost on him. “I’m a friend of Abra’s.”
❛ Right. Because lawyering is like, totally stressful. That’s what Grandfather said about it. He said that you don’t – worth with big firms, even though he thinks you’re probably talented. He said that you’re either talented or not worth my time. ❜
Abra thinks Matt is talented. If not in regards to doing the lawyer thing, then in regards to other things. Hopping over a small puddle, Abra stumbles forward and catches herself with a tiny gasp, righting herself in a moment before hopping back onto the curb.
Her eyes raise to look towards Matt.
❛ If I’m not – great, then I’m going to lie. And tell you I was. And you won’t know the difference, right? Because you can’t see. ❜
“Did he say that?” Matt chuckles, slightly bushy brows lifting up with a shrug. “I mean I guess I’m glad he thinks I’m talented... but yeah, I don’t do much work with any other firms, especially larger ones. I don’t always agree with their choices in clientele. So it’s just me and Foggy for now.” He helps her right herself after hopping the puddle, his hand moving lower on her back as they move along the last block before they arrive at the studio. “I can’t see, but I’ve been there for your practicing and I know that that won’t be necessary; you are good, Abra. I’ve told you; I have my own way of following what goes on in front of me,” he chuckles again, but warmly in reassurance. Sure, he couldn’t make out details-- the flow of her tutu or the details of the choreography, maybe, but. Matt could see her steps, make out the shape of her slender form bounding across the studio floor. Her steps are almost silent in her slippers, but even a small ‘paf’ is more than enough for Matt’s well-tuned ears, and it sends out a vibration to see anything he needs to enjoy her show.
❛ I mean – ❜
It’s just as well that Matt can guide himself out of the way – all things considering, Abra isn’t very useful. Screaming out when there’s a pothole and guiding Matt around it isn’t very useful. He, however, manages to guide her out of the way on a multitude of occasions. Abra doesn’t get it. He must have good hearing.
❛ I’m – nervous. Because I don’t know. I am. But Grandfather said I’ll be – magnificent. Like Anna Pavlova. Because I used to be like, really – good. ❜
His hand moves back to her shoulder, rubbing lightly over her back once the boy on the board is long gone, stroking soothing circles between Abra’s small shoulder blades.
“Ah, it’s okay to be nervous,” he assures her softly. Turning a corner with her, he chuckles, nodding a bit. “But he’s probably right-- you’re gonna be great, Abra.” For the first time since they’ve left, his gaze, though unseeing, falls down toward her beside him. “But like I said, it’s fine to be a little worried. I get that way too. Almost everytime I gotta go to court.”
ohfiendangelical;
Though he can’t see them when they enter, Matt’s pretty much already discerned who the newcomer is before they turned the corner in the hall outside the tea room where he sits. Abra was upstairs, having gone to grab something she’d wanted to show him. Liam was studying and Matt had long learned to recognize the pace of the older man’s steps and breathing. The only person left it could be, he had yet to meet.
“Zero, right?”
❛ It’s the summer recital so I would – think. Probably. During .. Summer. ❜
She actually can’t remember when Madame Volikov ( how does she always end up with Russian instructors ) said the recital would be – all things considering, Abra fell back into the lull of ballet with relative ease. Despite her quivering limbs and unused muscle, she was given extra attention by the sub-instructors to get her ready for performance by recital time ( so Grandfather insisted ).
Bright eyes lift – peer towards Matt with a cant of her head. And she’s reaching to grasp onto his wrist, squirming in her anticipation.
❛ Hey !!! But you’ll go no matter, which day. You said. You totally said. ❜
“Of course, yeah,” he laughs, his wrist turning lightly in her little hand when she tugs at it excitedly. “You just tell me the minute you know the date-- I’ll be there.” He uses her tiny hold to pull her nearer to himself; helping her avoid a particularly rushed boy on a skateboard when he hears the whirr of the wheels and scrape of his sneakers over the pavement closing in quickly from behind the two of them. “Are you excited for it?”
floweredophelia;
Matt’s hand rests, or rather, hovers, lightly over Abra’s little shoulder, fingers embedded in strings of fair hair as he guides her along the sidewalk. He feels her duffel bag, filled with her things for ballet, brush against his leg and smiles. His fear for her not being able to stick out to him among the the stimulators for his senses that fill the city was, as he believed, unrealistic. The honeyed smell that followed her wafted up to him easily, along with her little chirps while they moved briskly between crowds to her dance studio.
“So,” he asks, tilting his head toward her a bit, eyes still cast ahead. “When is that recital of yours?”
Me and Matt miss you all-- like for a starter
