I had roughly thirty layers of clothing on at the time; this was irrelevant. One baba paused mid-scold to grouchily put a single-sheet layer of newspaper over the bench. NOW it is safe. The uterus must be protected at all costs.

Some of them have maker spaces! That might mean 3D printers, sewing machines, photography studio space, etc. Most of them have welcoming teen zones, with comfy furniture to sprawl on, the young adult books, often a helpful teen-specific librarian. I’ve even seen gaming spaces and signs gently reminding older folks that this area is designated for teens and to respect that. Mine will loan you fishing poles, muffin tins and such for baking, an entire giant tote bag of book club stuff (multiple copies of the book, advice, questions, etc), and a backpack with day pass for the state park system. There are usually great kids’ programs, for many age groups, which can be a lifesaver for stressed parents. Sometimes their are author talks. Often you can book a conference type room for your DnD group (usually free, schedule usually first-come and as-available.) It’s *always* worth investigating what your local library has available! And as people have said, the more you can drive numbers up, the more likely they are to get funding. So get a library card, check and recheck books. Visit often, as many libraries do a rough daily head count. Use the computers and wifi. Access the maker space. Borrow ebooks. Attend board/friends of the library meetings and let the staff know you support and value them

Like I’m not saying kids shouldn’t be taught responsibility and shown how to keep their house clean. I’m just saying maybe children get tired and frustrated too. Like. Your teenager doesn’t have an “attitude”. She’s just had 7 hours of school and then came home to do 5 more hours. Then, her parents implied she was lazy because she hadn’t gotten around to doing the laundry. I’d snap at you too.

one of the things i love about ebenezer scrooge, and a christmas carol in general, is that, unlike most fictional rich people, scrooge doesn't allow himself the luxuries that he denies to others.

like. he is enormously wealthy, but does he spend his money on good food and nice things and indulgences? no. he keeps his house dark because it's cheaper to not light things, he eats gruel, he barely even makes a big enough fire to heat himself, let alone the room. he scrimps and pinches pennies everywhere he can - including in areas that other people would consider "necessities" rather than "luxuries."

the story of a christmas carol is as much about ebenezer scrooge coming to realize that his misanthropy and miserliness is making himself as miserable as it's making everyone around him, and learning to once again take joy in living in a way he hasn't allowed himself since he was a boy.

it's genuinely cruel to ebenezer scrooge to compare him to assholes like elon musk and jeff bezos.

for all that he is a terrible, terrible person, at least scrooge isn't a damn hypocrite.
