Blood tastes metallic; it's well known to anyone that's licked their share of nosebleeds or paper-cut fingers, but what people talk about less is that it's also sweet. V's forlorn mood lingers with that same saccharine undertone, nostalgia buried in layers by years of survival, the constant hustle expected of everyone in NC. Odd to search for success when she already has family out there in wastes, or maybe living for herself is still an enigma -- a code to crack without cypher or even a single clue. Bit of an universal experience, isn't it? Finding what makes you happy.
Better keep looking elsewhere.
"Yer family expect to see you again this time?" He adjusts the seat to account for his larger framer. The rearview, too, but that's more for fiddling rather than any safety concern -- the habit learned from a certain superior. ( 'Have to be aware of your surroundings, Mōri.' A memory of Marcus checking his equipment, adjusting mirrors, preparations near zealous before each mission. And during the drive, Kenshin watches him touch the garrote scar on his throat with an intent so sharp it's a miracle the old tissue didn't start bleeding all over again. 'Yeah, heard LT. Not in the habit of lookin' back.' )
Left arm slung out the window, folded at the elbow, Kenshin drives in correlation to the speed limits -- making sure to prevent anyone from cutting around when drivers in much more of a hurry start raging at the wheel. Fingers tap, the radio turned on low at the last channel and demeanour casual. Until: "That woman. Her name Helene?" Inflection flat, the question laid out like a punch, there's an abrasive quality he adds to name. Like bullets chewed up between the teeth, metallic and sharp and foul. "Yer gonna be wonderin' who a lot of psychos are 'round these parts."
The neighbourhood they pull into is the same as any other; claustrophobic-stacked apartment buildings, narrow alleyways, and junkies hanging by the corners. The district lights are reflected on the glasses, the glistening pools of siphoned oil; neon and bright, the bright orbs of the highway putting the state of decay into stark focus every few seconds like a snapshot as the sound of engines remain a constant. Somewhere helicopter blades rattle through the airspace, but here it's a typical weeknight. Loud with despondency.
Kenshin escorts her into her apartment, hand loosely connected to the lower back. Occasionally brushing against lumbar when she staggers on the steps. "Need better locks," is what he comments when looking at the door. Not that it would stop anyone with the intent to break in, but the thought... It's there. It sounds odd coming from him. A few more minutes, another rotation around the stairwell, and he's back with the duffel bag -- and if he stared at it in the trunk for a solid while, struck by the familiarity of the worn material, the faded colours, then it's no one else's business.
"Invite any gonk ya meet on the street to crash on yer couch?" He sets the bag on said couch, opening its innards with a slow drag of the zipper. It catches on a part where a few teeth went crooked or missing, but it works. Even after all these years... "Lemme see that." The still bleeding wound, the undeniable proof she met him. Among all the other scars, her body is still a continent, edges eroding from waves constantly crashing. And just as he intuitively recalls, the first-aid kit is tucked into the same section. It could use more air-hypos.
Helene.
( "Helly," and Valerie pities him, she does, high out of his mind and half-asleep on a bedroll in the middle of the desert, "grab me a beer from the fridge, would you?"
There's no fridge, no liquor to be found. All seven optics are colors unequal, none matching the same hex code, dim to bright to dead. He must be beyond trashed, that inhaler having started full and ended almost empty. Valerie pities him. She does.
"Yeah," she whispers tenderly into the dark, not moving an inch as his lights go out like smothered embers, "sure thing." )
What an evil skin to wear, how odd to be wearing a pair of heels she doesn't fit into. It feels like more than that, too - it feels like living in someone else's memory, like being dressed up in a bad costume and playing a part in a bad play; one written by an idiot, signifying nothing. Helene. The name is rolled around in her brain well after their arrival to her apartment, burned into her mind the same as that hand on her lower back. Kenshin is gentleman and monster in equal measure. It makes her a sick sort of warm on the inside, heatstroke turning fatal, stomach turning over with dying, tattered butterflies.
Kenshin only ducks out for a second, but the silence he leaves in his wake is murder. Her body screams at her for her ignorance, screams at her for finding herself as a myth. Even David had God's help before he slew Goliath, and V is sure that God quit listening to her many, many years ago. Family, he'd asked in the car. No, they've either got bad cases of shot in the fuckin' head or Snake Nation IDs that signify having moved on to greener pastures. While some family does remain in the desert, they still eagerly away Valerie's return. V doesn't have the heart to tell them that that girl's been shoved in a trunk, eaten away by packrats and hacked up by scavengers.
Kenshin returns. His voice is both balm and agitator, infection and antibiotic. What a familiar feeling. What an awful one.
"No, I'm just feeling a real sistership with Mother Theresa tonight," V replies, doing as she's instructed and sitting beside him, presenting her injured side, "you just happen to benefit."
Nostalgia is a bitch. V almost says as much, watching the way Kenshin touches that duffel bag - he gives it more respect than she ever could, treating it like an old friend instead of longstanding burden. He opens it like he loves it, and maybe he does. He opens it like he loved the man who owned it, and maybe he did. Where V finds its straps to be heavy, its contents expensive but vital to maintain, every pocket is a memory to the other man. How short on those he must be these days! V pities him.
She does.
A pretty sitter, V is quiet about the way Kenshin starts to comb through her things. "Use whatever," she mumbles, tracing Kenshin bottom to top, "you're a prick and got me good. I hurt."
It would be uncomfortable for others to watch, the ease with which she strips both jacket and shirt to get to that initial stab wound. It's deep, it's starting to ache across the clavicle, but that won't be for much longer. His hands are lukewarm, tepid like a fresh corpse.
"You really can stay," and her optics shift to catch his, "I don't mind. Might even like it if you did."
There's something underneath that V isn't sure how to verbalize. Other girls do it better - dolls are more professional. Usually, there's some kind of lap-sitting, hand-holding warmup, but V can't find the ability to move or speak like that in this instance. Maybe any instance, really, fumbling through intimacy she's hardly had any practice with. Fumbling for something to hang onto, for the body next to her, a dog crawling back to the beating hand. It's the only hand it knows.
She stops one of his hands. Sick to her stomach, unsure what she is asking for, she blinks up at him with wide eyes. A zoom-in does nothing to help her read Kenshin any better; illiterate as she was years ago, then.
"It could be fun after all that, yeah?" Bluff. A dare. A fucking wild guess and shot in the dark, a self-convincing lie. "Why not, right?"

Okay. So it's not, like, his proudest moment. Sue him, he's got a lot of those. Hell, the last two-ish weeks of his life have been entirely comprised of those.
Akira's back to concrete, the woman in front of him is pretty like a new knife straight from the manufacturer. Sharp, deadly, something you kind of want to play with despite knowing so much better. Riku's been nothing short of patient with him, and to tease her any further just feels cruel. Like a knife, too, she's got a point; their meeting wasn't exactly preem, nothing nova about it, and because of him they both have Claws on their asses. It was a bad idea to begin with, going back to Daisuke's right hand to beg some kind of forgiveness or absolvement all these years later. The guy never liked him much, anyway.
The guy never liked him much anyway, and for that reason, this would be the third time Riku has assisted him in evading either near-death or... No, just near-death. Maybe full-on death. Probably full-on death, considering the way it went the first time, getting out only thanks to her with several cuts and a battered ego. Daisuke probably would call him an idiot. Daisuke's probably rolling in his drawer, frankly.
Thankfully, a silenced mouth has never been a problem. Both hands come up to sign, slightly shaky, incredibly animated.
'I got hobbies!' bandaged fingers work quick, optics wide, 'I got plenty of fuckin' hobbies, that's not the problem! Problem is me having pissed off these gonks so bad they won't quit chasing me down! What about their hobbies?! Where's their lecture?!'
...He'd be lying if he said he didn't like the company, deranged as it sounds. Even like this, even being scolded - it's like old times, like living in a warm memory. Riku would've liked Daisuke. Daisuke probably would've really liked her, too.
Mouth closed, audio up. Akira's hearing implants are maxxed, and when those footsteps fade sufficiently, he's quick to rapidly tap on her wrist.
'Suffocating! Lame way to go out, lemme up!'
She does, grip loosening, and Akira heaves a mildly dramatic sigh of relief. It takes on a synthetic tint, even his huff pitch-corrected by chrome.
"Well," he shrugs, halfway poking out of that alley to watch Claws run in circles, "that was fun."
Maybe she's right. Maybe he's got a deathwish bigger than he imagined. "Can I make it up to ya? Good slurp shop nearby. These losers will be chasing their tails for a while - I remember some of 'em. They'll get bored quick, once the 'dorph wears off."
//I CANT RESPOND TO COMMENTS EITHER HHHHHEEEELP IM TRAPPED INGBE FUCKING BUILDING
//HELP HEEEEELP HELP IM SHADOWBANNED
banished to the shadow realm for the crime of being in europe, rip dravanianhorde we will miss you
WHAT THEFUCK IS HAPPENING DUDE AM I LITERALLY SHADOWBANNED???????
//if i had a dollar for every time akira waged a personal war that thoroughly destroys him from the inside out, i'd have two dollars. which isn't a lot but it's fucked up he's done it twice
//part of me is like "do i need to stop ooc character posting or do i need to kill the cop in my head". i think i need to kill the cop in my head and care less because frankly people can unfollow me if they're irritated about that!<3 that being said, i'm gonna dive into johnny and akira's relationship re:alt and evelyn because ohhhh my goooood i'm so normal. i'm so so so fucking normal and my flight's delayed and this is fr all i can rattle around rn
i'll argue about this until the cows come home but johnny DID love alt. in whatever way he was able, in whatever deeply unhealed way he knew how, he loved her. and he loved her enough that it made him definitive about blowing a hole in arasaka.
akira is literally the same way about evelyn. he didn't know her for long - i do not think akira ever knew her in a way that mattered even if he HAD run into her before, and i think he probably did once or twice. but it remains he didn't know her in a way that mattered. favorite color, favorite meal, the name of her childhood pet rock. he couldn't tell you any of these things and i think that eats him worse. all he knew was that she was desperate to leave, she was a good conversationalist and she was funny. and she needed to leave. and it's both his and arasaka's fault she's dead, and for that, the both of them have to go out with a BANG. akira will bring down that building again if it's the last fucking thing he does because evelyn was a good woman who didn't deserve to have an important job done by two idiots with delusions of grandeur.
DO WE SEE WHERE I'M GOING WITH THIS?? CAN ANYONE HEAR ME
NC, 2079, Tower Ending
//cost of a hotel in paris during unheard of historic weather: $500
cost of airport food to survive four hours of "will they wont they" with cancelling the flight to get my wife and i to rome: $40
lost funds because the airline literally didn't give a fuck and wouldn't assist us in finding another flight: $800
missing the entire leg of the rome trip due to all of this, potentially not even getting to leave the next day and missing a day in florence as well: priceless.
// . I JUST SAT BOLT UPRIGHT REALIZING JOHNNY WOULD BE HAVING CONSTANT WAR FLASHBACKS ABOUT ALT THE WAY AKIRA IS ABOUT EVELYN JESUS GOD I NEED TO BE PUT DOWN LIKE A LAME HORSE. OH MY GOD THE PARALLELS. OH MY GOD. I NEED TO BE UP IN FOUR HOURS BUT IM ABOUT TO HYPERVENTILATE THIS NEEDS A MASTERPOST LATER
//dude was probably sobbing to judy over a cigarette halfway signing and halfway stammering about "it's always my big idea, i never learn, i take shortcut after shortcut and i keep getting people killed, why is it never me, how'd i survive a bullet to the fucking head why is it never me it should be me". IM SO REGULAR BRO
//your daily fucking reminder that akira literally did decide to try and fuck over dexter deshawn for evelyn parker because he KNEWWWW dex was a shitty fixer having grown up in NC. and evelyn so clearly deserved to get the hell out of there with judy. YEARS of knowing so many dolls thru other claws and his enforcer brother, he KNOWS their life is often shit regardless of what they wear and how they talk. he knew if evelyn was going for ARASAKA GOODS that she was desperate to leave. no one does that unless its a last resort and if dex is someone he can screw, he was gonna do it.
and when he finally has enough brain and consciousness to understand what happened, when the painkillers wore off and johnny shut up a minute, he immediately went "if she's dead it's my fault."
