that he was able to heft himself up that distance, and on one leg, without being forced to try a different approach or a fat-guy "do-over".

He may not really know how far his center of gravity shifted by whatever weight he most recently gained, so he waves extended arms in small circles to compensate for the imbalance and avoid succumbing to gravity's escalating tug on his body.

It's one of those things you learn by trial and error when you get bigger than before, like how to avoid grazing wall corners and furniture as you move around.

(Pool ladder and handrail anxiety is a thing. They may not anchored well enough nor tested to accommodate really heavy guys impressing their full weight onto them.)
