Hey, I'm Bendix!

I'm a danish artist and I spend the majority of my freetime either drawing my oc's in various scenarios or slowly working on my comic.

Art is not my main job, but if you have any questions about eyes, glasses or contact-lenses, I'd love to try and answer your questions (any excuse to nerd out is perfect for me).

Here's a bit about the comic:

In a world where becoming a champion of the global tournament Bellum Pulchrum is a life-long dream of many, the road to earning the title is ridden with danger and fierce competition. Kain, Dakon, Christie and Raki are dead-set on reaching their goals through the means of this deadly sport.

Day 1 - 4

So, as some of you may know from other social media or my earlier post here, I have been fighting Pancreatic cancer for the last 18 months.

After 12 rounds of Folfirinox chemo, 4 weeks of daily Radiation + Gemcitabine and a Whipple procedure resulting in the total removal of my pancreas, as well as an affair ending my marriage of 21 years and having to deal with separation during all of this, I am finally starting to try and piece the life I have left ahead of me back together.

The plan is to try and post a now batch of doodles every day for 30 days. The idea here is to stop focusing on only posting a drawing if it is 'good' but to get back into the habit of drawing and sharing every day and stop being overly precious with what I am able to draw after over a year of working very little and life changing treatments.

The end game is to try and prepare myself for my return to the animation industry in July, and also get back to producing my own work and stories for the first time in nearly a decade.

The major snag here is that my contributions to my disability fund have been exhausted as of 2 weeks ago, and my work start date got pushed back from the start of June to the end of July, making a 2 week gap in pay into a nearly 8 weeks period with zero income.

As anyone who has followed me over this last year and a bit will know, I feel deeply uncomfortable with asking for help and raising funds, but between my medical expenses, over a year of not working during aggressive treatment and my separation I find myself in a bit of a bind.

If anyone is willing to share my situation and pass the message around, I have extended my go-fund me from last year to cover the costs I have accrued over the last 18ish months as well as to fill the gap while I get my strength and fitness back up to the level it needs to be to start working again come July:

Can I offer you a Hijack X-Men AU…

Jack can conjure ice, frost, snow etc (of course), but he can’t fly. Hiccup can shapeshift into a dragon, partially or completely.

Most of the time, Hiccup does what he can to look human, withdrawing all of his dragon traits and only bringing them out when they’re training or on a mission (though his scales react emotionally and tend to appear whenever Jack catches him off guard, whoops). He can’t fly (yet) while mostly human, so he rarely brings out his wings unless he’s fully shapeshifted. Besides the shapeshifting, Hiccup is also able to shoot fire from his mouth and has an eternal fire within him that keeps him nice and toasty.

They’re stark opposites with their powers and quickly discover that they are the only other mutants able to handle the temperatures the other can rise or fall to. There will be times when either of them loses control, and they’re the only ones who can get close enough to calm the other down without getting killed. They can still get hurt, though.

@beccabloo had the perfect idea of the academy making watches for them that alert the other if their temperature has risen or dropped to a dangerous level. And if the watch goes offline, it means it couldn’t handle the temperature, and they have to get to them ASAP.

What if I just... had a go at all of the HTTYD characters...

So here's Astrid and Dagur the Deranged 🙂‍↕️ I know they both wear armour, but I wanted to show off Astrid's arms HAH. Also, viking armour is extremely hard to research.

There’s a lot of contradictory information, and some pieces of armour were only used in very specific countries or regions. Plus, many of the records we have were written by observers who most likely described things based on what they were already familiar with, so SHRUGS.

I love the Viking era, but I don’t care that much about historical accuracy with stuff like this, mostly just the vibe (like, Astrid should technically be wearing an ankle-length dress and long sleeves if I did.) But I did want to base the armour off of something, so I ended up just… not adding armour. Maybe this is just their casual wear, pft.

I haven't watched the show (yet), but I’ve seen a few clips here and there, and while Viggo’s character seems super interesting, his design is just… I’m sorry, but I can’t stop seeing a Lego man 😭

Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West au for Jack and Hiccup!

For my version of this au, I imagined Hiccup as a former Sky Clan Tenakth who now lives with the Oseram in the Forbidden West, while Jack is a Nora outcast (I couldn't decide between white or brown hair for Jack, so you get both.).

Jack is the one who finds a Focus first and then shares that knowledge with Hiccup. I love thinking about what connects characters and why they’re drawn together, and in my mind, Hiccup already sees machines and the old world differently from everyone else, but he’s missing information to truly understand it.

He sees that Jack is actually using the Focus rather than treating it like an accessory, and Jack chooses to share it with him, offering that missing piece of the puzzle that Hiccup needs to truly understand the metal world. This turns out to be what Jack needed, because while Jack is smart, Hiccup is able to piece things together that jack wouldn’t have been able to do on his own, so they quickly end up relying on each other. I really wanted that trope of working together because: “you have something I want” until that becomes: “you are what I need.”

So, together, they explore the metal ruins and uncover the truth behind the Old World. Hiccup gets a machine companion (Toothless), and Jack gets a glider.

I’m also playing with the idea that all machines have ai like gaia did, so they’re actually capable of feeling and learning (it would probably depend on the species though, I don’t imagine a thunderjaw would be very fun to try and domesticate…), because I want Toothless and Hiccup to have the same connection as they do in the movies.

As for the designs, I mixed and matched elements from the artbook and the game itself. I have so many thoughts written down from designing them and from all the differences I noticed between the clans, but it’s literally pages long. If anyone wants me to ramble about that and share some of my thoughts, let me know!

So my friend AJ and I are fully indulging in our Hijack love together, and I was like, “hey, why don’t you tell me your favourite parts of OTNWAS @jjackfrost , and I’ll try to draw them?”. They started re-reading it and sent the amazing sequence of Hiccup trying to remember what happened during their escape from the fairies up until Jack froze the ocean, and we were both like - man, this would look amazing as a comic.

So now we’re doing a comic collab :)

These are my sketches, and then AJ is doing some absolutely amazing revisions. We’ll keep sending it back and forth until we’re happy with it, and man, we can’t begin to say how excited we are to work on this!!

GUESS WHO'S BACK

Oh look, I still draw.

The Hijack server is sustaining me. Blabbering about my ST AU with people who are just as excited about it has actually made me want to draw again (it's been 7 months, god damn).

The one where they’re sitting down is Hiccup and Jack after their monster hunt. Jack gets hurt and Hiccup can barely handle it.

The comic is about Toothless catching a ride in Hiccup’s jacket, and Hiccup can’t bring himself to kill him or throw him out. I’ve changed the Upside Down a lot, so Toothless is from there and will grow to his full size over time. That’s why Hiccup eventually has to come clean and ask Jack for help because he can’t hide Toothless anymore.

A thing I’m doing right now that has nothing to do with art - I’m trying to make a Hyper Light Drifter cosplay but with a twist :’) it’s a chaotic process hence the chaotic pictures pfft

Man I've just had to admit that I am so so burned out. I want to draw more, but all of last year was just my year of being uh, tired. I took a sabbatical where I had hoped I would be able to draw, but the thought of actually sitting down and drawing just filled with me with dread. I instead jumped headfirst back into photography again (after like a 5 year break), and I've started making a cosplay (also after a 5 year break hah) just to keep being creative but in more active non-computer ways.

I do want to ease my mind into drawing again and associating it with something good. I don't know what happened man, but I want to get back to being a little hyperfixated about art and thinking about drawing all day until I can get home and actually do it. I miss my oc's and I miss putting my all into silly little ships like Hijack. Please have patience with me as I figure this out :' )
