Dennis Whitaker was not one for public displays of affection and it wasnât much of an issue in your relationship. Well, it wasnât until some of his coworkers questioned if you two were even in a committed relationship because of it. Okay so honestly what happened is I was imagining Abbot going over to Robby's house and seeing a bunch of emergency vehicles outside but then I realized it wouldn't go like that because Abbot listens to the police scanner so he'd know if one of Robby's neighbors called in saying they heard a gunshot or whatever.
Times like these is when i hate that i have a vivid visualization.
Cause i can image the scene playing out: the color grading, the lighting, the sirens, the crowd forming outside of Robby's home and Jack trying to get through the crowd-- and i hate ever bit of it.
LIKE I AM IMAGINING JACK NOT HAVING PARKED THE CAR PROPERLY YET BEFORE RACING OUT TO GET TO HIS FRIEND. IM NOT OKAY.
Jack's car is like. Diagonal in the middle of the street. I can also totally see Jack using that he's a doctor who works with SWAT as a medic to get them to let him through and then once the various first responders on the scene realize he knows Robby they try to keep him back but Jack Abbot is not easily stopped when he's on a mission.

Hey, I just read in the author's notes to one of your Robby fics that you're repulsed by writing media typical romantic stuff. I was wondering if you could elaborate on that? I'm really curious about what not media typical romantic stuff would look like.
Also, are you comfortable with receiving romantic requests? Could you outline what's okay and what's not? And what level of physical affection you're comfortable writing? I feel like there's a bit of a lack of nonsexual physical affection in fanfics and was wondering if I could come to you for that :3
(Sorry for asking so many questions >.<)
I would normally type out a proper msg to this comment cause I really like getting into my ace spec type opinions, but unfortunately, my exhaustion and motivation happened to cross at this exact moment so my response may come off a bit dry, so my apologies for that.
Anyway, here is the response:
"I just read in the author's notes to one of your Robby fics that you're repulsed by writing media typical romantic stuff. I was wondering if you could elaborate on that? I'm really curious about what not media typical romantic stuff would look like."
Media typical Romance (from my experience):
Have massive and intense declarations of love that donât seem earned. Usually, the foundation for that love is based on looks or based on some vague interest of the love interest.
When showing characters acting upon love act very lovesick and they hold romantic love to a such high degree.
Example; if the protags love interest happens to say something bad abt our protag for some reason they act so intensely: isolating, not talking to friends and family anymore, may go into drinking binge, sometimes they get get mean and angry at ppl that have nothing to do with teh love interest. Often times that two were not even that close to begin with. They werent even friends, and yet it hurts the protag SO deeply.
They like the idea not the person. (And most media doesnât acknowledge and treat it as the same thing. There can be an intestine story told there of liking the idea and not the person, but that doesnât tend to typically happen.)
Another example: A person is willing to do a lot for their love interest when a bond was never established between them to justify that behavior. They would excuse behavior, blindly trust, maybe take on requests from their love even when it may go against their morales.
Again, when they are not even close to know each other that well.
Edit:
I feel like I didnât answer how a work that is not âmedia typical romanceâ would look like to me. Just⊠not hella love sick. Just love based on something.
Maybe because the vibes match. Maybe they have things in common. The person did a kind gesture and they are smitten and it goes from there.
My main issue is that the foundation for these relationships are shakey to me.
"Are you comfortable with receiving romantic requests?"
Yeah! I am not opposed to getting romance requests. They have to be fully mentioned within the request, otherwise there is a high chance of me just writing a gen fic or platonic fic. (Evident by most the works on my master list.)
Note: Depending on the prompt I may just pattern recognition romance media that i have seen and copy paste those romance narratives on to the prompt.
But if i have more time and really cared enough for the prompt (either cause of theme, msg, etc), then i will apply my romance sensibilities to that work.
"Could you outline what's okay and what's not [in regards to receiving romantic requests]? And what level of physical affection you're comfortable writing? I feel like there's a bit of a lack of nonsexual physical affection in fanfics and was wondering if I could come to you for that :3"
If you care for what I would write for request purposes:
I donât have a HARD limit. Iâll just be cringing throughout my writing process is all⊠(Take: Help | Frank Langdon, and Love l Michael Robinavitch for example)
If you care for what icks me out when writing for curiosity purposes:
If I have to write anything that is lovesick with no foundation of actual love and care beyond just lust, I am uninterested in writing it. (Will do it for requests, but still....)
Donât get me wrong, I am okay with writing lust and such in my own time, but I refuse to write lust and love interchangeably. (Unless, obviously, that is the whole point of the plot.)
For Physical Affection:
I donât like the deep emphasis of physical touch being solely romantic, and when it is shown in a romantic settings, there is some sexual aspect of it.
Why canât people just hold hands?
Why also MUST they hold hands?
What if they just like each otherâs presence and donât do all that kissing and hand-holding? There is more than one way to showcase love, but it is not shown.
I am not against physical touch. I am against the framing of it.
When it comes to physical touch in a platonic dynamic, I am pro that all the fucking time.
I have a Falling Skies/Pitt (imma be real honest, I just crossed Jack Abbot to that fic and that is all.) Where the OC and Jack are so close, and thereâs no romantic undertone between them.
The OC needs comfort? They are actively being pulled by Jack into his lap so he can give them a hug, comfort and anchor them.
The OC is having a nightmare? They will sleep in the same fucking cot.
OC or Jack is having a bad day? They seek each other in a room and just lean their head on the other's shoulder, not saying a word, and the other just GETS IT. They donât need to share words; the other will just know and act appropriately.
I am sure there is plenty I have on this topic cause I care a lot for it, but for the life of me rn my brain is foggy, and I might have missed things I wanna discuss further.
If you have more questions on this. Feel free to ask some more!

edit:
side note:
My original version of PDA a.k.a. Affection (when/if do post it) has how I prefer to write romance. and maybe that one starter section of Date Night where Y/N and Dennis saw each other for the 1st time before their date.
Also, "Before We Go (2014)" is my favorite romance movie so... take that as you will. (I haven't seen it in a while, but i know i held/hold it in high regard.)

Hi! I have a request that could possibly be made into a series.
It's somewhat similar to Overlooked and touches on some of the same themes, but with a different character dynamic. The main character is a unit clerk in the ED who has a sunshine/"momma bear" personality. They're always bringing snacks, making sure everyone eats, and encouraging coworkers to take at least a 10-minute break during their shift.
Despite their positive attitude, they're deeply insecure because of constant criticism from their family. Their siblings, cousins, and friends are all doing what their family considers "more" with their livesâthey're doctors, nurses, lawyers, architects, etc.âwhile the reader is "just" a unit clerk. They can't realistically afford to continue their education without taking on severe debt, and they already spend much of their time helping and caring for their parents. Unfortunately, their parents rarely appreciate it and often tear them down instead.
The ED becomes their escape from everything happening at home. They also have a huge crush on one of the providers, possibly Dr. Robby or Dr. Park. Nobody really realizes how serious the crush is because everyone assumes it's just part of the reader's naturally kind personality.
The reader is often overlooked and lonely. Something eventually happens that makes their insecurities even worse. Maybe someone makes a joke or an offhand comment about something they baked, or maybe seeing Robby with Noelle causes them to spiral because they already feel like they'll never be good enough. I imagine the first part being mostly hurt with little to no comfort.
For the second part, the reader gets injured in the ED while trying to help a patient or family member. During everything that follows, the provider discovers both the reader's depression and their crush. Maybe they're sent to the reader's locker to retrieve medication or personal belongings and accidentally find a letter or an open journal that reveals what the reader has been struggling with.
The third part could focus on the provider intentionally spending more time with the reader, learning more about them, admitting their own feelings, and eventually taking them on a date. Also can you make it so that the reader is similar to Javadi, hasnât been kissed, had a partner, etc.
Please let me know if this is something you'd be interested in writing or if it's too strange of a request. Thank you!
Thank you for liking Overlooked enough to send in a request!
Since you asked to let you know my thoughts on the request, Iâll provide my thoughts rather than let it sit in silence in my inbox as the other do đ :
First of all, it seems like a fun, interesting fic, but I donât know if I am the right person to write that exact prompt. I could see myself taking general elements of the prompt and working it to my writing preferences, but as it is rn, I do not know if I can sink my teeth. (and if you want something close to your prompt, i don't wanna change stuff and disappoint you)
Also, insecurity for insecurityâs sake has never been my bread and butter for a multi-chapter fic.
I mean, I can do it; Overlooked and Winchester By Blood are proof of that, and a few others, though, theyâre more far in between.
But I feel like I would have to change a few things about that prompt for me to make it work.
But also, really heart warming that youâd trust me for the multi-chapter prompt anyway.
(keep in mind that this is from a cursory read of the prompt, so maybe there is a bit more then to chew on for me)
on top off that, and I feel most importantly:
I do have a writer's queue (linked here) and if i do add it onto the list of things i am working on, it will a bit before i get to it.
I love reading people liking how I ended âOverlookedâ because I needed a way to close out this fanfiction that wasnât so abrupt like in the it was in the ambulance bay, and so I just slapped together a random ass scene, looked at it, shrugged and went âsure, this will do.â
To me, it wasnât exciting. Not me kicking my feet like âha ha this is such a nice scene! :Dâ
Cuz it was slightly a different tone and too sassy for what the rest of the ficâs tone was, but the comments that are just reading this fic and are like âHell yeah, Jack!!â
Truly fills my soul with glee.
That was such a non-thinker of scene and everyone is like âgood shit, writer!! Good shit!!â đđđ

THANK YOU FOR THE CLARFICATION!! I WAS STRESSING
I was admitaly half way through the fic when i had to paused to consider if i was doing it right or not, but at that point i was almost done with my 1st draft and decided to just push through. đđ
Truly you relived my soul of so much stress. lol.
But in other news, Im so glad you liked the fic!!! <3 <3 <3
Heyyy, I'm the anon who asked for the Pitt fanfic where reader was nicknamed Cadet, just wanted to say you made me so happy! It was my first ever fanfic request and I was so nervous! >.<
Also, I came back with another idea:
Reader who kind of goes unnoticed by everyone and gets sad when Jack (or other characters, if you like) compliments someone else. I'm thinking reader overhears Jack whispering to Santos that she did a badass job with the REBOA and reader thinks Jack will never think that highly of them because they're not dauntless like Santos.
Hoping you can somehow turn this around into fluff/comfort? Thank youuu! :3
Ahh, youre such angel. There is nothing to be nervous about! Though, I do get it. Thanks for the request and I am glad you liked it so much! Even better, enough to request something else!
--
Okay, so! Here's the thing!
I feel i did swell on the comfort aspect.. but maybe not so much on the fluff part...
I did my best, i might re do this again, but i thought I'd share this none the less!

Author's note:
â Half way through the fic i reread the request and realized that (1) that the request said fluff/comfort when i was writing angsty... LIKE HAVE YOU SEEN THAT INTRO??? and (2) I don't know if i know how to write pure fluff??? Like i was at a lost... So i just.. went along with what I had...
You shouldnât have felt hurt by it. It made no sense for you to be hurt by it. That you have been overlooked once again. You donât stand out much nor do you make any big waves like the rest of the new additions to the Pitt do.
Victoria is a child prodigy. Trinity is brash, but she has personal experience to balance it out. Dennis? Well, that hurt you more. âCause though you feel like the two of you were in the same boat not seeming to quite excel at anything, for whatever reason, Dr. Robby took him under his wing.
Which leaves little olâ you in the shadow of their greatness.
You sighed as you watched Dennis get dragged along by Dr. Robby once more. You donât bother look to where Victoria is, knowing that she is shadowing Dr. McKay again. As for Trinity? You looked over at her charting, rolling a pencil between her teeth as she nonchalantly went about her work with seemingly no care in the world.
That level of calm? Your envious.
The commanding voice of Charge Nurse Dana sounded out through the central hub. She announced to the room a motorcycle accident not far from here with an ETA of a few minutes.
Dr. Jack Abbot, who had his backpack on and was looking like he was just about to leave, looks about the room. âWhereâs Robby?â
âSomewhere with Whitaker,â Dana said attention on the patient board, seeing if she can clear out beds for any other patients that may need it; ever the moving gear she is.
Dr. Abbot sighed. âDamn it.â And dropped his bag behind the central hubâs counter. â(L/N)! Santos! Need the both of you! On coming!â
You perked up at that. Looking about, you wondered if you had heard wrong or if it had been someone else who was the one being called.
Trinity sighed from her work desk, stretching in her seat before standing to head to the ambulance bay. As she passed you, she patted you on the back. âThatâs you, (Nickname). Letâs go.â
Your eyes widened, and you clambered out of your seat, barely catching the gloves that Trinity tossed your way as you hurriedly followed suit.
You clumsily put on your gloves as you made it out into the Ambulance Bay. You stood a few paces from Trinity and Abbot as you waited for the ambulance to arrive.
âWhat are we looking at?â Trinity asked.
âMotorcycle accident with possible serious burns,â Jack responded, looking out into the street ahead.
âYikes,â she responded.
He nodded. âI could go without hearing about motorcycle incidents for a while,â he muttered.
It almost sounded like a comment meant for his own ears, but Trinity huffed at that nonetheless, seeming to share in some knowledge with the attending that is lost on you.
You shifted your weight onto your other leg as you waited in painful silence for the ambulance to arrive; a feeling that you seem to be alone in.
You felt eyes on you and turned to the side, and met with the questioning gaze of the Night Shift Attending.
You didnât know what to make of that, nor did you give yourself the opportunity to process that look as you swiftly turned your head back onto the road. You cringed at that, being painfully aware that Dr. Abbot had just witnessed you actively avoid his gaze.
Before you could die in your embarrassment, siren sounds blared out, and red and blue lights that came interview: the ambulance arrived.
â
You got dragged into a trauma room with Trinity and Dr. Abbot.
Unfortunately, the case wasnât as simple as a minor motorcycle swerving out of control and skidding the riderâs knee or spraining their something or another. The vehicle had went out of control, yes, but the vehicle parts were in such a state that it was a surprise that it didnât crash and didnât blow sooner (an assessment Dr. Robby made as your patient and him talked Motorcycles). Unfortunately, the vehicle did blow, but only as a good Samaritan tried to pull your patient out of a crash, causing them to get caught in the vehicles blast range.
The Samaritan was critical and was being handled by a team of Dr. Robby, Dr. Langdon and Dennis Whitaker.
As for you, youâre dealing with the rider: less critical, in account of them wearing a helmet and protective gear, but still not doing wellâŠ
The riders burns and injuries were assessed: broken rib and wrist, dislocated shoulder, and on top of that partial thickness burns; it was fucking gnarly.
âThatâs one way to describe it,â Dr. Abbot said.
You met that comment with a confused look, only to then realize that your thoughts about the patient were not much of a thoughtâŠ
You internally screamed as you snapped your attention to the patient trying your best to not let your embarrassment get a hold of you.
Dr. Abbot remained in sidelines as he told everyone what to do: Mind the burns. Mind the wrist. Make sure to stop the burning, and dress it carefully. Weâll get to the shoulder when we can.
âOkay team. Letâs roll.â
â
You couldnât get out of the room fast enough.
You removed your gloves, tossing them half-hazardly into the trash, shoving the doors open on your way out and beelining to the Ambulance Bay.
You needed air. You needed to breathe. And you needed to get the fuck out of there.
You canât help your reaction. You brought this upon yourself after all, but that doesnât mean it hurts any less.
You remember Trinity taking on the relocation of the patientâs arm. A self-satisfied grin on her face as she felt and heard the socket pop into place.
âOkay, thatâs cool,â is what she said, as she stood there, impressed at her own work.
Abbotâs look of amusement, and complementary comment is what hurt you. âYouâre a natural,â he told her.
It shouldnât hurt to get overlooked like that. Trinity earned it. She put herself out there. But getting overlooked over, and over again, starts to chip at you eventually.
You made it out into the Ambulance Bay feeling the pain, disgust and envy writhing in your chest.
Pain for being dismissed.
Disgust for being that badly affected by it.
And envy at Trinity for making it seem so easy and having what you want.
Which you suppose returns you back to disgust for thinking that of Trinity; she earned that praise, and you donât deny that.
Doesnât hurt any less though.
The cool air of the ambulance Bay washed over you the moment you got out. You found a quiet spot just around the corner, behind some well tended bushes. Ironically, right now, you wanted to go unnoticed, the last thing you needed is for someone to see your upset at not getting an "atta boy.â
You huffed at the thought. No matter how you look at it. Itâs fucking pathetic.
You sat at the spot you found, bringing your knees up and hiding out of sight.
You needed to calm yourself. You canât be this bothered by not receiving praise for your work; itâs embarrassing.
A frustrated groan ripped out of you as you pulled your knees closer to yourself, replaying the scene in the trauma room all over again.
'Need to breathe. Need to calm down.â
Taking a deep breath, you dropped your knees and began to set up, when something caused you to shoot up straight in your seat, hitting the back of your head on the wall behind you. You hissed as you brought your hand to the back of your head, but eyes were trained in front of you, wide and in shock, at the sight of one Dr. Jack Abbot.
âJesus, kid, have you no awareness of your surroundings?â
If there was any point in time youâd welcome death, this is the moment.
Your face grew flush as you processed the sight of the attending in front of you, simply leaning against the wall, as if he had been there from the start, or as if he were simply keeping you company.
You just stared in stunned silence, brain buffering as to what to say.
He raised a brow at that. âDid you hit your head hard? Here let me take a look?â he moves towards your hand out to check for an injury, snapping you back into the scene.
You pulled away before he could get to you. âN-no, Iâm fine. There is noââ
He fixed you with a look, that left no room for discussion.
You bit your lip, minding your words, before dropping your hands to your lap, leaving the attending to do as he pleases.
He checks the point of impact, careful to not actually hurt you more than you have done to yourself; the thought embarrassing as you play it out in your head, before pulling his hand away.
âDoesnât seem serious. Might just hurt for a while, though.â
You nod. Not wanting to make any wrong move.
âSo, whyâd you race out?â
âWhat?â Your eyes snapped to him.
Jack went back to his original position: Arms crossed, leaning on the wall, staring you down. âAfter the patient got sent away, you raced out of there. Everything went smoothly. Injuries were assessed and taken care of, no surprises came along, Dr. Park didnât even threatened to bite someoneâs head off and yetâŠâ He raised a brow at you, allowing you to finish the thought.
âJust⊠just wanted to distress.â You said your poor excuse of a lie.
âAfter one of the least stressful trauma cases? Come on, kid, do you want me to believe that?â
You bit your lip. âWell, it would be nice if you did.â
He sighed. âOkay, now, Iâm not going to let it go. Spill.â
âItâs not important.â
âBut you still ran out of there.â
You opened your mouth, but didnât have anything to say to that.
"Did you⊠I donât know, wanted to handle the dislocation or something?"
"No⊠not quite."
"okayâŠ"
You donât say anything else.
"Kid, I can be here all day."
âNo, you canât.â You fired back matter-of -factly. âYou just got out of a 12 hour shift and stayed overtime. There is no way you can stand on that leg for long.â You looked down at his prosthesis before meeting his eyes then you pulled a face at yourself. âWait, can I say that? That sounded rude. Can I say that?â Turning self-conscious at your words to your attending.
Abbot snorted, and shook his head at your small panic. âHey, itâs not like you said anything wrong,â he pointed out. âThat being said, are you going to let your attending stand here on a bad leg while youâre holding off on stuff?â
You frowned. âAre you pulling rank and guilt on me?â
He shrugged. âWhatever works.â
You paused, staring blankly.
"So?" He trained his eyes on you ushering you on.
"Oh yeah," you got to start. âHow do I even say this? Oh, my feelings are hurt cause youâre rightfully overlooking me? Like what did I ever do to earn someone glancing my way? What kind of pretentious assââ
âKid.â
âHuh?â
âYouâre in your head.â
You blinked. âRight⊠uhm.â you pulled your knees up once more trying to make yourself small, but also trying to anchor yourself. âif I say this can we never bring it up again?
"Okay, sure, but depends."
"On?"
"Severity... I guess? hopefully youâre not going to tell me something serious."
You averted your eyes. 'Okay. Severity. Surely this wonât be brought up again, not like crying envy ranks high on severity, right?'
You took a deep breath. "I⊠I donât know if I am doing well here." 'Thatâs one way to start.'
"Why would you think that?"
'And thatâs one way to get cornered.'
"Uh," you tried to find a thing to say. "Between me, Dennis, Victoria, and Trinity, everyone seems to excel at something or another. They bring something to the table and I just⊠I donât know I just⊠feel inadequate? I get looked over, I'm not the 1st to be consider for things, well, not even the 2nd or 3rd either. Just am kinda... there. Taking up space.
"And I know, I know, that isnât the point of the job. Weâre here to save and help people at their lowest moment, but⊠I donât know⊠It hurts? Bothers me?" You shook your head and rubbed at the discomfort in your chest. "I just feel a sort of way about it and it sits uncomfortably in my chest, and it seems like none of my best attempts seem to simmer down this feeling."
Abbot stared processing your words.
"Iâm sorry⊠Thatâs a lot-- Iâm tossing blame. I am justâŠ" You shrugged, not knowing what to say, resting your forehead on your knees as you hid away from your attending.
Abbot continued to stand there in silence before approaching you. You glance at the man over your knees.
"Scoot."
You did as told without question, allowing the man to sit besides you. You kept your eyes trained in front of you not daring to meet his gaze.
"You know," Jack started. "First time Iâve seen you in the Night Shift. You were not remarkable."
You blinked, staring ahead, and with a hollow voice replied, "Thanks."
He huffed amused. "But, you were a hard worker. Patients open up to you. Sure, you were awkward in your approach, but the patients were at ease with you."
You took that in.
"Procedures arenât your bread and butter, not back then, not right now, but there was an improvement made. Iâve seen you take notes. Focus in when Robby speaks on them, and I have seen you commit to them all to heart. Youâre taking your time here to learn what you need and youâre doing a good job at it."
You felt the back of your neck warm up as the buzzing in your chest faded to something lighter.
"You also work well with others, know who is good for their job, and who to ask for help; And youâre not ashamed of doing so." He paused huffing at a recollection. "Some people here think they are too big a person to ask for help and admit that they need it or even admit that they have a blind spot, but at the end of the day, weâre here for the patients and asking for help also benefits them and you carry that ideal on your sleeve."
"Youâre a good med student and you will be a good doctor when the time comes. You may not be doing anything flashy, but you have the heart of a good caretaker. Any hospital would be lucky to have you."
You turned away, overwhelmed with emotions, and a bit teary-eyed.
He smiled at that reaction than averted his gaze. "Think I did a good job?"
You laughed. "Yeah." You wiped it away a tear trying to compose yourself. "Yeah. Thanks."
"Donât sell yourself short." He smiles at you as you met his gaze.
You both shared in that comfortable silence and thought back onto your days really appreciating what you were able to bring forth to the Pitt. This compliment alone does not fix all your problems, but it leaves you feeling less inadequate than you have perceived yourself and that is a good start.
As you ran through that thought, you were broken out of it by Langdon coming out through the ambulance doors calling out to you. "Hey kid, Robby needs you in the ED."
"Me?"
"They will need a moment," Abbot responds in your stead.
Langdon looks between the two of you before giving Abbot a nod and heading back into the ED.
Abbot turned to you, giving you a pat on the back before standing up. "Well, itâs time to get back to work."
You took a deep breath and followed suit holding your stethoscope and kicking the ground sheepishly. "Thanks again..."
"Of course." He steps aside allowing you to walk past him to the ED. "Come on, Iâll walk you in."
â-
You both split off as you entered through the ambulance bay doors.
As you heading off to wherever Dr. Robby needed you, Jack headed off to the central hub. He fetched his bag and was about to head out when he had spotted Dana.
"Hey, Dana."
"Abbot? Still here? I thought you've gone home."
He leaned on the counter. "No, I had things to take care of. Speaking of which, can you pass a message to Robby for me?"
She raises a brow. "Yeah, sure."
"Tell him to stop focusing on his golden kid. Itâs fucking with the morale."
She chuckled at that. "Will do."
