"Elsaaa~" chanted a soft voice that was followed by the sound of nails being scraped against a wall. "I just want to talk" Anna murmured with a curl in her lips and a tear in one eye. She had reached a critical mass, like a nuclear reactor needing water to cool it. She needed love to cool the aching flame that permated from her heart all through her torso. "Stop running!" she snapped suddenly ((toxic Elsanna away?))
Elsa panted. She had needed to run down the halls to escape the footfalls of her firecracker of a sister. She was not ready to face her. Not today.
Tomorrow, she told herself.
It was what she always told herself.
She would face Anna tomorrow.
The only problem was that tomorrow never came.
Since their parents had died it had only gotten worse. Elsa doted on Anna. Got her gifts from all around the world. Imported chocolates. Expensive sheets. Gowns made of the best silks. But actually speaking to her face-to-face. That…that was difficult. Because truth be told Anna frightened her. Her intensity, her stare, her neediness.
And what would Anna say if she knew Elsa’s inner darkness. The things she did to animals and to unsuspecting people who happened to just…disappear?
She rested her back against the door where Anna scratched, wishing with all her might she had the courage to open that door and embrace the person she loved most in the world. The room’s temperature began to drop.
“Anna…” she whispered. But of course her voice would not carry far enough for her sister to hear.
thefallenprincessofarendelle:
Anna felt all of the air driven out of her body as she was thrown backwards like a ragdoll, crashing against the wall in a crumpled heap. Despite feeling like she’d been hit in the face by a moose(a very cold moose), she couldn’t help but smile, raising up her fallen head as she panted.
“T-there we go…” Anna gasped out from her sitting position, one hand checking herself over for anything broken. No, just bumps and bruises. Still, it had hurt more than it ought to have because of the cold that had bypassed her skin and burrowed its way to the depths of her core. She loved it, it in all truth. Elsa had penetrated her, piercing through that shell of abandonment and replacing it with her pain and joy. She could feel the cold seeping up through her…until it was gone once more, leaving just an empty and desperate void. Anna grinned, a bit of Elsa’s blood staining the white teeth. Still, that had been progress. It was better than nothing, after all.
“You just did, Elsa. See? It’s not so hard” Anna said soothingly. She almost cursed their parents in her head. How could they have made Elsa like this? So afraid to express her love in the true way? Anna wouldn’t say she hated their parents, of course, but she did wish now that they had simply encouraged Elsa’s quirks. Yes, that was what this was, just a mere quirk. Elsa was deep in denial about it, but Anna knew, she knew better(for once) what Elsa wanted. What she needed.
Anna crawled forward towards her sister again, a lascivious hunger beating in her heart and shining in her eyes. At the same time, her expression was gentle, understanding of Elsa’s problems. She could see Elsa’s fear, she needed to be eased into this.
“Hey, you did good for it being your first time in forever. We can just talk now, if you want”
Elsa recoiled in horror upon what she had done. Seeing Anna fly back like a ragdoll all over again. It was enough to make her want to jump out of the highest castle window. She remembered what the trolls had warned her of. The danger in her magic.
She clasped her hands to herself and then to her bleeding wound. She looked at the blood and then her sister.
“No…” she told her. “No, you hurt me. I hurt you. It shouldn’t hurt like that? Should it? Love doesn’t feel that way?”
“Love is when you put someone else’s needs above your own” Anna shrugged off, genuine concern on her face as she saw Elsa’s fear. Her poor sibling, so afraid at so little. “And that’s what you were doing all this time, right? Hurting me to keep me safe, right? Hurting is love, don’t you get it?” Anna’s logic was less than bulletproof, but it was good enough for her nearly unstrung mind to accept.
“Sshh, it’s okay. We can just ease into this” Anna soothed, extending a hand and resting it over Elsa’s wound gently. “...I’m just stunned, you know? It’s been forever, since I’ve gotten anything besides just a quick look, you know? You look different. I thought you’d be all sick, but you look fine” Anna assured.
Her voice was entirely calm, her face ordinary and composed. But her eyes, they still held that off-light.
"Elsaaa~" chanted a soft voice that was followed by the sound of nails being scraped against a wall. "I just want to talk" Anna murmured with a curl in her lips and a tear in one eye. thefallenprincessofarendelle:
“You won’t keep it a secret from me. You’ll show me every little scrap of it. You’ve been holding out, and that’s never ever real love” Anna hissed, noticing Elsa’s shudder with some glee. Yes, her gamble had paid off! Elsa was still restraining herself, but Anna could swear she felt her slipping. “Just give me all of it. All of the pain you put on me, just admit it. Let it out on me. And I’ll return the favor…” Anna was had no idea what she was even saying by this point. It was like her brain had been cut off from her throat to be replaced by her heart and her gut, letting out in a stream every base emotion she felt at the moment. And she loved it, to free herself of those pesky doubts, of the guilt and grief, and just realize it was love all along.
Another hand began drifting down Elsa’s back, trailing past the small of her back and reaching further down. Anna’s breath was hot and her pupils dilated, her head leaning forward to meet Elsa’s. Anna could feel more shivers, not from the ice but from touching Elsa’s pale skin. It was like she had finally reached the mountain’s summit, only to find that there was an even greater one atop it. She welcomed the challenge.
“Elsa, hurt me. Let it go…” Anna whispered, opening her mouth like a vampire and attempting to chomp down on Elsa’s collarbone. It seemed like the best way to whip Elsa out of her trance, to get her to actually react to her beyond mewling. Anna didn’t want to be doing all of the love, after all. It was only fair for Elsa to hurt her too.
At first the older sister would have done the more mutually affectionate—however forbidden—act of put her mouth to Anna’s in a kiss. After all, it felt natural. It felt true. But then teeth sunk into her neck and the young queen panicked and the words sank in as deep as Anna’s teeth.
It was almost out of her power. Almost.
Elsa could feel she had some control over it when she caused the blast of cold blast that would sting her sister when she put her hand against her sister to pry her off her body.
“ANNA! STOP! I CAN’T!”

“Anna…” she whispered. But of course her voice would not carry far enough for her sister to hear.
thefallenprincessofarendelle:
Anna crossed her arms in front of her face reflexively, letting out a whispered scream as the wind lashed her arms. Shards or not, the cold wind still hurt like a million needles. She was pushed back against her will until she was entirely thrown off her feet and into an awkward sit.
“There, at least we’re getting somewhere…” she panted, lowering her arms and panting slightly to recover her breath after the sudden blast of cold. She rubbed her elbows on her knees to attempt to remove the bits of frost on them as well as warm them up, though it did little since she began to shiver anyway. And then Elsa got right back to apologizing. “No, what are you doing? Can’t you see? I’m fine!” Anna declared, shaking Elsa’s shoulders to try and snap her out of it. But Elsa was totally confused, thinking that this pain was a bad thing. Poor Elsa, who couldn’t express her love any other way, thinking that her love was terrible.
“Okay…I understand” Anna murmured, her shaking turning to gentle, soothing pats. It became less of a pat and more of a caress as time went by. “I have to help you, Elsa. Won’t you just let me? Why can’t you just show your love and stop being so…round-about about it?” Anna’s voice was turning into a whisper. She didn’t fear the ice at all. If anything, it just seemed to attract her, her hands lingering on the delicate cold still left on Elsa’s hands. “I need to…feel it. And I can help you with that” Anna added, her other hand moving to Elsa’s nape. Anna knew this was abnormal, that this was wrong, and an affront to God and nature. But Elsa herself was abnormal, and so that explained it. An abnormal person required abnormal love, and Anna would bear that cross. She’d bear it happily.
Elsa at first let her sister touch her. The touch felt like fire. But one she needed so badly after all these years. She had been eleven when she put ice in Anna’s brain and the trolls had needed to take it out.
Ten years. Ten years of no touching. Ten years without a hug. Ten years of drowning with no affection.
So when Anna touched her she leaned into it at first. Her shudder came out broken and her eyes closed. She nodded. Perhaps her sister could help her. To understand how normal people worked outside of locked rooms and hiding.
“But I have to…keep this a secret…I have to…”
Then she felt the hand on the nape of her neck. She knew something about that was more…intimate than a sisterly touch ought to be. Even without having been taught directly. She opened her eyes and met with her sister’s.
“Anna?” she questioned with look and tone. Was this how she would show her love? How she would make up for lost time and for being a monster?
“You won’t keep it a secret from me. You’ll show me every little scrap of it. You’ve been holding out, and that’s never ever real love” Anna hissed, noticing Elsa’s shudder with some glee. Yes, her gamble had paid off! Elsa was still restraining herself, but Anna could swear she felt her slipping. “Just give me all of it. All of the pain you put on me, just admit it. Let it out on me. thefallenprincessofarendelle:
And now mind games too? Anna grabbed her head with one hand, looking at the ice from Elsa’s hand in disbelief. Was that as real as her obvious lies about not hurting her? No, she could feel the room get colder, that was real. Strange for truth to be in bed with lies. Unless, Elsa also believed it to be true.
“Protection? Don’t you understand, Elsa, you could love me so much more if you just let this go wild!” Anna sputtered in disbelief, picking up some ice from the floor and throwing the shavings upward. She was cackling now, her head pushed forward while her shoulders hunched. “All this time, you could have been hitting my heart with your actual ice instead of just freezing it with the silence!” Anna suddenly snapped out, moving to the door in a flurry of hateful movements. She moved jerkily, like a marionette who had been freed of its strings. Her hands pawed at the door, a snarl building on her lips. Elsa’s constant denials had grown to be too much for her.
“But don’t worry, Elsa. I’m gonna make you understand. I see the way that you really do with love, behind that perfect little mask” Anna muttered rapidly, clenching and wringing her hands after she had unlocked the door. She didn’t yet open it. “You love me, but you stop yourself from showing it. That’s not love” Anna accused, pointing a bloodied finger at Elsa with a hiss. “But hey…I’ll help you with that. Just promise to let me in again. Let me see the magic. Let me feel it” Anna growled, rubbing her bloodied finger across the frost while a happy shudder ran through her body.
Elsa watched her sister break down and the room’s temperature dropped more than she thought possible. At this point she had to do something or Anna was going to freeze. She needed to get her sister out of the room and away from her while she was like this but she also needed her calmed. She had only a few staff in the castle who knew about her secret powers who she could turn to right now. Kai and Gerda came to mind. She could run to them now, tell them Anna was having a meltdown. But if she left the room her ice powers would follow her while she was frightened like this.
What could she do now? What would calm Anna down? What did she want?
Love.
No, looking at her. Maddened like this with her eyes looking like she was about to kill something–
Elsa forced a blast of cold wind at her sister, careful to keep ice out of it so as not to hit her with shards. It pushed her towards the bed and pushed her into a sitting position so Elsa could exclaim “Please! Calm! Down!”
Only right after using her powers against her sister again, the thing she had avoided for years, did she shrink into self loathing. She crumpled. She fell to her sister’s feet weeping.
“Anna, please forgive me. I’m a monster. It’s why I’ve avoided you. Don’t make me hurt you again….”
Anna crossed her arms in front of her face reflexively, letting out a whispered scream as the wind lashed her arms. Shards or not, the cold wind still hurt like a million needles. She was pushed back against her will until she was entirely thrown off her feet and into an awkward sit.

thefallenprincessofarendelle:
More denial in Elsa’s eyes. More falsehood and lies. She refused to break down the facade of uncare. Anna was no psychologist, but that spoke to something clearly wrong. And the truth was so obvious too. Anna looked inside of Elsa’s room, and saw ice and snow lining the walls. She had no way of knowing how it had gotten there, but the why…the why was key.
“Is this what I don’t understand?! That you just freeze yourself off in your room and hurt yourself?” Anna demanded, throwing Elsa away and letting go of her wrist. Now, the hurt, Anna wasn’t upset about. It only made sense with how Elsa was obviously suffering, locking her true love away from Anna and only hurting her indirectly through subconscious efforts(Anna really, really had a loose grip on psychology). What was upsetting was that Elsa didn’t even let Anna reciprocate the favor, instead hoarding the love dealing to herself and no one else(she did love Anna obviously, but she expressed it in the most roundabout way possible). “That you don’t share anything with me? All of your anguish, your pain, your suffering…you just keep it to yourself…” Anna murmured, her eyes growing disappointed. Now, had Anna maintained his line of thinking, perhaps she’d have maintained her rational appearance. But she didn’t.
“That’s not what love is, Elsa! You have to give and take. You have to love me, and if it means hurting me, at least own it! Don’t just hurt yourself, if that’s your love. Hurt me too! Love me instead of just yanking my chain!” Anna ranted and raved, nodding her head like she was making some great scientific revelation.
Elsa could scarcely follow her sister’s line of thoughts. In fact, she could not. She simply fell to the floor after being thrown aside by her more energetic sister and looked up at her in disbelief. She saw the room and in a moment all her fears were met. Anna knew.
Anna knew.
Anna knew what Elsa was. She felt the floor beneath her going cold and ice forming under her as she stared at her sister. The horror only intensified as she listened to her and simply could not understand the feverish brain.
“Anna…I love you!” she exclaimed. “Why would I hurt you!” she begged.
She gestured to the floor where ice had formed and then to the room. “I am a freak of nature!” she whispered. “Don’t you see what I was trying to shield you from! What I have been trying to protect you from! I love you, Anna! Please! Please, stop this! Lower your voice.”
She panicked and looked around. Guards might walk around the corner and see the ice. They might suspect something. She did not know how to thaw her ice. She never had. The trolls only told her fear would be her enemy. She quickly grabbed her sister’s hand and ran into the room with her, shutting the door behind her and locking it.
She whispered.
“Anna, please,” she begged, tears streaming “you’re not making sense. Don’t you see now what I was trying to protect you from?”
And now mind games too? Anna grabbed her head with one hand, looking at the ice from Elsa’s hand in disbelief. Was that as real as her obvious lies about not hurting her? No, she could feel the room get colder, that was real. Strange for truth to be in bed with lies. Unless, Elsa also believed it to be true.

thefallenprincessofarendelle:
Anna felt like she’d been socked in the gut, but by this point, she was used to that sensation. She had to admit though, it was damn clever of Elsa to lull her into a false sense of security before smashing down her hopes once more. It was the truest of anguish, to be betrayed by the only person you loved. But Anna could swear up and down that she saw the adoration in Elsa’s eyes as she hurt her. Oh, it was hidden behind a veil of ignorance, of not knowing what she was doing, but deep down, Elsa did want her. She was just in denial, like usual.
Of course, the princess said none of this aloud. Instead, she just froze in place, her face turning from manic to heartbroken in an instant, and then to a pained and weak smile.
“A tease, huh?” Anna whispered in a cracked voice that held so much pain it might as well have been bleeding. “Yeah, I have to understand. Just like you do” Anna’s voice turned savage in an instant, years of pent up resentment washing themselves out in a single action. Her hand snatched forward, grabbing at Elsa’s hand and clutching it with all the force that she could muster. She wasn’t strong enough to cause any real damage, but it’d hurt if her fingers dug into Elsa’s hand nevertheless. But the pain wasn’t the objective. The objective was trying to shake Elsa out of her obvious delusion that just playing coy hadn’t gotten old.
“Yes, I can!” Anna rebutted in a snarl, beginning to step towards Elsa’s room. Enough of this game of cat and mouse, if Elsa’s love was going to be so painful, then she could suck it up for just one moment. “And you’re not going to lock me out again! Just give me a sign already! I can’t stand this anymore! Your love can’t hurt this much, Elsa!” Anna shrieked, voice giving out halfway through to turn into a croak. Oh, she may understand Elsa’s love, but she didn’t respect it yet. “At least give me a minute of normal love!” Anna begged pitifully, disbelieving the idea that Elsa’s adoration would be nothing but suffering. And yet somehow, a darker part of her whispered that yes, Elsa’s love was always going to be just that. Elsa didn’t understand it any other way. Anna shut the voice up for the moment, looking into Elsa’s eyes for any sign that this had gotten Elsa to understand Anna’s perspective.
Anna was only just barely clinging to the last cliff of her understanding of what love was. And if Elsa rejected her again, threw her into yet another spin cycle of this torturous existence…she’d lose her grip on the cliff entirely.
Elsa shrieked as her hand was clutched. She was unaccustomed to being touched in general. And the clutching not only frightened her but her sister’s hand digging into hers caused hers to shrink back, compliant. She followed Anna’s step toward she room.
“You don’t–” she cried out. “Want to see what’s in there!”
Again instead of suggesting to her sister she projected to herself. She gave her sister emotions. It was not ‘I don’t think you want to see what is in there’ but ‘You don’t want to see what is in there.’ A leftover of what her own parents had done to her. ‘You are ashamed of you powers,’ ‘You feel like a monster,’’You do not want to talk to your sister.’
She held up the hand that Anna was not clutching. It trembled in warning. Watching it shake, Elsa shook it in no.She could hold it up strongly to a royal court but to her manic and wild sister she wavered.
“There’s something you don’t understand.”
She had no way of knowing how it had gotten there, but the why...the why was key.
All of your anguish, your pain, your suffering...you just keep it to yourself...” Anna murmured, her eyes growing disappointed.
Anna half expected the doors to open to the sound of trumpets and empyrean lights, and wasn’t really that far from the truth(in her eyes, anyway). It was a miracle for her pleadings to finally have an effect, for that door to finally open with just a request after countless days of pleading, begging, screaming, and every other form of plea. And to see her, and hear just one word in reply, it validated all of it. Anna loved Elsa’s love, to be so fulfilled by the end of the little game. That was the point, wasn’t it? To hurt each other until it was the right time to show them love again?
Anna’s face twitched, the corners of her mouth upturning slightly in spastic twitches as euphoric tingles of laughter built in her chest but refused to come out. She put a hand to her face, covering her eyes as a full blown smile spread itself across her face, soft chuckles emanating from her mouth. Elsa did love her…but as good as this feeling was, did it mean that they’d have to be deprived of each other like this forever and ever? Anna’s chuckles turned to sobs, tears running between her fingers for a moment before she lowered her hand. Her eyes still sparkled, but there was a lust in them. Not necessarily sexual or romantic, but just an overwhelming need. She needed contact, and this torture being Elsa’s love…it hurt. But she was strong, like Elsa said. She’d be able to change with this love. So long as it was there…
“Oh, I knew you did. I knew it all along. I’ll have to pay you back, you know! You probably don’t know it, but…” Anna spoke in a voice that cracked once or twice before she gave a sad smile and sniffled. Strangely, she returned to a smile. “Well, never the mind. I’ll pay you back with this love” Anna said, slowly approaching Elsa. While it was ostensibly for a hug, Anna’s manner resembled something like a starving beast coming upon a carcass.
Elsa recoiled as quick as one would from fire. Trained for years not to touch another for fear of freezing them, remembering just how her ice had landed in her poor little sister’s brain and nearly killed her. That could not happen again. No matter how much Anna wanted to hug.
And besides that, there was something manic in the way Anna approached her that frightened her back. She even gave the smallest of gasps.
“Anna, wait!” she held out a gloved hand and cautioned. “You have to understand. You can’t.” She referred to touching of course. Though for now she did not tell her why. Her sister seemed anything but ready for the truth.
Though after seeing her tears and how euphoric she was upon just seeing Elsa and hearing her voice… Elsa felt she could get used to making Anna happy like this. She just had to make her happy again. She had to find a way to tell her the truth so she didn’t think this was her fault. Just not yet. Anna was clearly not ready yet.
“Please. Be patient.”
Again, she left things vague for the sake of not bruising her manic sister’s heart.
And in the process probably made things all the more deadly.

Anna listened with dead eyes, her breathing hitching in anticipation. Elsa would probably just dismiss her again, grab her heart in her fist and crush it in front of her, but at least that was attention of some kind. Even if Elsa told her that she hated her, it’d be something compared to the misery of her attempted silent treatment. But Elsa’s words were better than Anna could have hoped. Would she actually see Elsa as more than just a shadowy, fleeing figure for once? Anna almost choked, and a blue spark returned to her eyes.
“Oh…sure, sure!” Anna said, an excitement in her voice, punctuated by an ecstatic giggle. There was a shuffling noise as Anna poised herself, doing her best to restrain her urges to toss aside Elsa’s requests. Why shouldn’t she, if Elsa had done the same to her? Elsa showed love in a different way, in double meanings and in lies. Maybe this was one of those. But Anna forced those feelings down for the moment. Elsa might just be coming out to bait her again, but she wouldn’t give up the chance of snatching said bait due to being so impulsive.
“Yes, go ahead, explain away. Finally, let’s just stop playing this stupid game and love each other in the regular way. I mean, it’s fun, but you have to stop pretending some day. Unless…” Anna paused, thinking to herself as she thought she realized the answer. “Is this your love, Elsa? Oh, please, tell me it is” Anna was almost ranting to herself as she paced back and forth in front of the door, waiting impatiently for the only person in the world that she cared about right now. And maybe, just maybe, that person cared about her too.
She wanted to reassure Anna simply that she loved her. But they had been over this the past year especially. The last time she told someone she loved them had been their parents. And then…
She knew herself. She knew how her emotions reacted just to saying things. It was why repeating phrases helped so much sometimes. So to say the simple words
I love you.
She feared it would make her vulnerable. Something she could not afford now as Queen.
But maybe she didn’t have to say it. Maybe Anna had already say it for her?
And she was not wrong. This was Elsa’s love. Protecting her from being hurt. From a power that could easily kill her.
With s trembling hand she reached for the knob of the door and took in a deep breath, glad to see it was not frosting. Now that she had a plan she seemed to have stabilized. She slipped from the room like a ribbon on the wind and concealed its cold secret behind her.
Elsa gulped. At first avoiding her sister’s eyes, terror-stricken at what she might see. This was both the person she loved most in the world and the specter that chased her from room to room. The object of love and fear.
“Yes.”
She gave the simple answer. It was her love.
Anna half expected the doors to open to the sound of trumpets and empyrean lights, and wasn’t really that far from the truth(in her eyes, anyway). Anna waited for a reply. A sound, a sign, anything. Anything would be better than this oppressive loneliness that permeated the air, crushing her in its vice of misery. Anna was wrong, however, in thinking that anything would be better.
“You need to calm down. Go away”
Anna roiled and twisted, her whole body shuddering like she had been stung by wasps. This, this sensation was worse by a fair bit than the loneliness. It was an enforced loneliness, brought on by Elsa’s own will. But it was a lie, she could tell. Anna imagined hesitation in Elsa’s voice, she told herself that she had just misheard her.
“You want me, Elsa. You want me just as much as I want to be with you” Anna blurted out, not even knowing what she was saying. Through tear streaked eyes she took in a sharp shuddering gasp, feeling like the breath wasn’t being accepted by her lungs. “Good-bye” Anna growled venomously, turning away and going to her room to leave Elsa alone. Elsa wanted to be sporty with her then? Wanted to give her hope and then crush it? So be it, she’d do the same then. Let Elsa feel the silent treatment like she had. Maybe it’d make her yearn as much as Anna did.
~
Anna returned precisely an hour later. She felt like a starved woman, though she was just the opposite of it after some binging. Her nails raked across the door, scratching the wood and leaving a few bits of broken keratin behind. Anna didn’t seem to notice as she spoke like a zombie.
“Elsa, are you ready to come out?”
Elsa’s heart skipped several beats when she heard the longing in her sister’s voice. And the word choice.
“God in heaven…” she whispered to herself.
You want me.
She trembled to her bones and not from the cold. She hugged herself and tried to stay strong. The magic gloves did nothing to stop the steadily dropping temperature and frost forming all around her now. What was she supposed to do? Then she heard Anna’s footsteps as she left.
She got up and ran to the door. What if she hurt herself? What if she–
Tears began to form at the corner of her eyes, quickly stinging as they too froze.
Had she hurt her own sister with her words. She leaned against the door and tried to calm herself down first. If she ran into the halls now after Anna she would drag the cold with her and freeze the halls, but she had to stop her from hurting herself.
But she could not seem to get a hold of her nerves or get that deadly tone of Anna’s out of her head. Or had it been deadly?
No it wasn’t deadly. It was just…intense. More emotion than Elsa was allowed to feel.
She had to explain this to her sister. That she was not allowed to feel strong emotions. Even if she had to keep the ice powers a secret. She went over in her head how she would explain these things to Anna for the better part of an hour, tormenting herself for choosing her words wrong until she heard her sister return and her nails scratch across the door.
She backed away.
“Anna…” she replied, training her voice to be calm.
“Anna, I have to explain something to you…”
She thought she had found a solution at last. One that might keep her sister from being self-destructive.
“I’m….” she trembled “going to come out of the room. “But you have to promise not to touch me. Or frighten me. I’m not as strong as you.”
Anna listened with dead eyes, her breathing hitching in anticipation. Elsa would probably just dismiss her again, grab her heart in her fist and crush it in front of her, but at least that was attention of some kind.
